Alpinia oxyphylla, sharp-leaf galangal, is a species of ginger native to East Asia. It was first described by Friedrich Anton Wilhelm Miquel. [1] [2] [3]

Gan Ning General serving warlord Sun Quan (died c. 220)

Gan Ning, courtesy name Xingba, was a Chinese military general serving under the warlord Sun Quan in the late Eastern Han dynasty. Originally a notorious pirate, he gave up the life of a marauder in the late 190s and became a subordinate of Huang Zu, the Administrator of a commandery in present-day east-central Hubei. Disheartened by Huang Zu's indifferent attitude towards him, Gan Ning eventually left Huang and made his way into Wu territory, where he found his calling and became a military officer under the warlord Sun Quan. Throughout his years of service under Sun Quan until his death, Gan Ning fought in numerous battles for his lord, including the battles of Jiangxia (208), Red Cliffs (208–209), Xiaoyao Ford (214–215) and Ruxu (217).

<i>Alpinia</i> Genus of flowering plants

Alpinia is a genus of flowering plants in the ginger family, Zingiberaceae. It is named for Prospero Alpini, a 17th-century Italian botanist who specialized in exotic plants. Species are native to Asia, Australia, and the Pacific Islands, where they occur in tropical and subtropical climates. Several species are cultivated as ornamental plants. Species of the genus are known generally as shell ginger.

Ling Cao was a Chinese military general serving under the warlords Sun Ce and Sun Quan during the late Eastern Han dynasty of China. He was the father of Ling Tong. He was killed by Gan Ning after his ambush at Xiakou.

Huang Zu was an official who lived during the late Eastern Han dynasty of China. He served as the Administrator of Jiangxia Commandery under Liu Biao, the Governor of Jing Province. He is best known for killing the warlord Sun Jian in an ambush during the Battle of Xiangyang (191) and resisting an invasion by the warlord Sun Quan at the Battle of Xiakou (203). He was defeated and killed at the Battle of Jiangxia in 208 against Sun Quan's forces.

Alpinia officinarum, known as lesser galangal, is a plant in the ginger family, cultivated in Southeast Asia. It originated in China, where its name ultimately derives. It can grow 1.5 to 2 m high, with long leaves and reddish-white flowers. The rhizomes, known as galangal, are valued for their sweet spicy flavor and aromatic scent. These are used throughout Asia in curries and perfumes, and were previously used widely in Europe. They are also used as an herbal remedy.

Luo Wen-jia is a Taiwanese politician. A member of the Democratic Progressive Party, Luo worked closely with Chen Shui-bian, first as Chen's legislative assistant, and later within Taipei City Government while Chen was mayor. When Chen was elected president in 2000, Luo joined the Executive Yuan as vice chairman of the Council of Cultural Affairs. Between 2002 and 2004, Luo was a member of the Legislative Yuan. He left the legislature for an appointment as head of the Council for Hakka Affairs, from which he stepped down in 2005 to run unsuccessfully for the Taipei County magistracy. Luo was subsequently defeated as a legislative candidate in 2008. Luo returned to politics in 2019, when he was named secretary-general of the Democratic Progressive Party.
