Amalendu Chandra (born 1963) is an Indian theoretical physical chemist, a professor and the head of the Department of Chemistry at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. [1] He is known for his microscopic theories and simulations on liquids, interface and clusters. [2] He is an elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences [3] and the Indian National Science Academy. [4] The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, in 2007, for his contributions to chemical sciences. Amalendu Chandra, born on 6 October 1963 in the Indian state of West Bengal, graduated in chemistry from the University of Burdwan in 1984 and completed his master's degree from the same university in 1986. [6] His doctoral studies were at the Indian Institute of Science and after securing a PhD in 1991, he moved to Canada for his post-doctoral studies at the University of British Columbia on an Izaac Walton Killam Fellowship. On his return to India in 1993, he joined IIT Kanpur where he serves as a professor of the department of chemistry and also the head of the department. [7] He held two chair professorships during this period viz. Rahul and Namita Gautam Chair Professorship (2008–11) [8] and Sajani Kumar Roy Memorial Chair Professorship (2011). [9] He is also associated with Biman Bagchi and assists the research group headed by the latter in their studies. [10]

Chandra's researches are based on the simulations of liquids, interface and clusters and he is known to have contributed to develop microscopic theories and predictions. [11] He has conducted reportedly extensive studies on the equilibrium and dynamical behaviour of complex molecular liquids and bulk ionic solutions as well as on the structure of molecular clusters using theoretical and computational methodologies. [7] He has documented his researches in several peer-reviewed articles; [12] ResearchGate, an online repository of scientific articles has listed 118 of them. [13]

Awards and honors

Chandra was selected by the Indian Academy of Sciences in 1993 as an associate of the academy with the tenure running from 1994 to 1998. [14] In 1995, the Indian National Science Academy awarded him the Young Scientist Medal [15] and followed it up with the Anil Kumar Bose Memorial Award in 1997. [16] He received the Bronze Medal of the Chemical Research Society of India in 2006; the society would honor him again 2015 with the silver medal. [17] The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, one of the highest Indian science awards, in 2007. [18] He was elected as a fellow by the Indian Academy of Sciences in 2009 [3] and he became an elected fellow of the Indian National Science Academy in 2015. [4] He has held several other research fellowships including the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship (2002–03) and the Ramanna Fellowship (2006–09 and 2010–13), and J. C. Bose National Fellowship of the Department of Science and Technology (2013). [6]

Srinivasan Chandrasekaran is an Indian organic and organometallic chemist, academic and a former chair of the Department of Organic Chemistry and the Division of Chemical Sciences. He was also a former Dean of the Faculty of Science at the Indian Institute of Science. He was known for his research on organic reaction mechanisms and organic synthesis. and was an elected fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, The World Academy of Sciences and the Indian Academy of Sciences. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, in 1989, for his contributions to chemical sciences.

Biman Bagchi is an Indian scientist currently serving as a SERB-DST National Science Chair Professor and Honorary Professor at the Solid State and Structural Chemistry Unit of the Indian Institute of Science. He is a theoretical physical chemist and biophysicist known for his research in the area of statistical mechanics; particularly in the study of phase transition and nucleation, solvation dynamics, mode-coupling theory of electrolyte transport, dynamics of biological macromolecules, protein folding, enzyme kinetics, supercooled liquids and protein hydration layer. He is an elected fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, the Indian Academy of Sciences, The World Academy of Sciences and an International honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Along with several scientific articles, he has authored three books, (i) Molecular Relaxation in Liquids, (ii) Water in Biological and Chemical Processes: From Structure and Dynamics to Function, and (iii) Statistical Mechanics for Chemistry and Materials Science.

Suryanarayanasastry Ramasesha is an Indian quantum chemist and a former Dean of the Faculty of Science at the Indian Institute of Science. He is a former chair of the Solid State and Structural Chemistry Unit and Amrut Modi Chair professor of Chemical Sciences at IISc. He is known for his studies on conjugated organic systems and low-dimensional solids and is an elected fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, the Indian Academy of Sciences and The World Academy of Sciences. Subramanian Anantha Ramakrishna is a professor of physics at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur specializing in optics and condensed matter physics. He was awarded the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, India's highest prize for excellence in science, mathematics and technology, in the physical sciences category in the year 2016. Ramakrishna obtained his M.Sc. degree from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur in 1995 after pursuing the integrated 5-year M.Sc. programme and secured his Ph.D. from Raman Research Institute, Bangalore, in 2001. His thesis was titled "Light transport and localization in Active and passive random media" written under the supervision of Prof. N. Kumar. He spent two years at the Imperial College, London, as a postdoctoral researcher and joined the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur as an assistant professor in May 2003, where he now holds the position of professor. In July 2020, Prof. Ramakrishna took charge as Director of the CSIR-Central Scientific Instruments Organisation in Chandigarh on lien from IIT Kanpur and served their till October 2023.

Subramania Ranganathan (1934–2016), popularly known as Ranga, was an Indian bioorganic chemist and professor and head of the department of chemistry at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. He was known for his studies on synthetic and mechanistic organic chemistry and was an elected fellow Indian National Science Academy, National Academy of Sciences, India and the Indian Academy of Sciences The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, in 1977, for his contributions to chemical sciences.

Pradeep Mathur is an Indian organometallic and cluster chemist and the founder director of the Indian Institute of Technology, Indore. He is a former professor of the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai and is known for his studies on mixed metal cluster compounds. He is an elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, in 2000, for his contributions to chemical sciences. Jarugu Narasimha Moorthy is an Indian organic photochemist and the director of Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Thiruvananthapuram. He was a Dr. Jag Mohan Garg Chair Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. He is known for his studies on organic photochemistry and supramolecular chemistry. He is an elected fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Indian Academy of Sciences. He is known for his work on synthesis of complex carbohydrates and new dendrimers and is an elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences. Sandeep Verma is an Indian bioorganic chemist and chemical biologist, and a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IITK). At IITK, he heads Sandeep Verma's Research Group in the areas of ordered peptide assemblies, metal-mediated nanoscale systems, programmable soft matter for neuronal regeneration, novel antimicrobials, and small molecule-stem cell modulation. He is an elected fellow of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA), the Indian Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, India, and the Indian National Academy of Engineering. Bose Chair Professor of the department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Bhopal and a D. N. Wadia Chair Professor of the department of Earth Sciences at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur.

Yogesh Moreshwar Joshi is an Indian chemical engineer, rheologist and the Pandit Girish & Sushma Rani Pathak Chair Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. He is known for his studies on metastable soft matter and is an elected fellow of the Society of Rheology, Indian National Science Academy, Indian Academy of Sciences, and Indian National Academy of Engineering. In 2015, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded Joshi the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology for his contributions to Engineering Sciences. In 2023, he received prestigious J C Bose fellowship constituted by the Science and Engineering Research Board, Government of India.

Arup Kumar Raychaudhuri is an Indian condensed matter physicist, materials scientist and a Distinguished Emeritus Professor at the S. N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences. Known for his pioneering work on the interplay of disorder and interaction, Raychaudhuri is an elected fellow of all the three major Indian science academies viz. Indian Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Sciences, India and Indian National Science Academy as well as the Asia-Pacific Academy of Materials.
