Pradyut Ghosh (born 17 February 1970) is an Indian inorganic chemist and a professor at the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science. [1] He is known for his studies on chemical sensing of anions, interlocked molecules and self-assembly. [2] He is a recipient of the Swarnajayanthi Fellowship of the Department of Science and Technology and the Bronze Medal of the Chemical Research Society of India. [3] The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, in 2015, for his contributions to chemical sciences. [4]
Born on 17 February 1970 in a farmers' family in the village of Birsingha in Medinipur District of the Indian state of West Bengal, [3] Pradyut Ghosh graduated in chemistry in 1990. He followed it up with a master's degree in 1992 from the Rajabazar Science College, Calcutta University. [5] Enrolling for his doctoral studies under the guidance of Parimal K. Bharadwaj at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, [6] he secured a PhD in 1998 and moved to the US to pursue his post-doctoral studies under Richard M. Crooks. Returning to India in 2000, he joined the Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute (CSMCRI) as a scientist. In 2001, he received an Alexander von Humboldt fellowship which enabled him to continue his professional studies with Fritz Vögtle and Christoph Schalley [7] at the Kekulé Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry of the University of Bonn. He resumed his duties at CSMCRI in 2002 as a C-Grade Scientist, a post he held till 2007 during which time he had a second spell at Bonn University from April to October 2003. In 2007, he joined the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science as an assistant professor where he served as the head of the department of inorganic chemistry from 2012 to 2015 and is a professor there. Ghosh is reported to have done extensive researches on Anion recognition, molecular capsules, chemical sensing of Ions, inorganic salt extraction, supramolecular aggregations and interlocking molecules. [5] He has developed several ligands with varying anion recognition elements as well as methodologies for selective sensing of phosphates, separation of hydrated metal sulphates/potassium bromide and bromide removal using halogen bonding. [2] The development of Gypsum chalk replacing the calcium carbonate-made chalk which was in use traditionally was one of his notable contributions. [3] His research has been documented by way of a number of peer-reviewed articles; [8] ResearchGate, an online repository of scientific articles, has listed 112 of them. [9] He holds a patent for the process developed by him viz. Process for the recovery of palladium from spent silica. [10] He was on the national organizing committee of the inaugural Frontiers of Organometallic Chemistry, a biennial symposium on Organometallics held at Thiruvananthapuram in December 2016. [11] He has delivered several invitational and plenary addresses. [2] He has also mentored several scholars in their doctoral and post-doctoral studies. [12] He has been involved in a number of projects for agencies such as the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, The World Academy of Sciences, the Department of Science and Technology of India and the Science and Engineering Research Board. Ghosh received the Young Scientist Award of the Indian Science Congress Association in 1998, [14] and the Young Scientist Award of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research in 2004. [15] The B. M. Birla Science Prize in Chemical Sciences was awarded to him in 2009, [16] the same year as he received the Swarnajayanthi Fellowship of the Department of Science and Technology. [3] This was followed by the Bronze Medal of the Chemical Research Society of India in 2012. [17] The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research honored him again with the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, one of the highest Indian science awards, in 2015. [18]
Sanjeev Anant Galande is an Indian cell biologist, epigeneticist, academic, former Chair of Biology and the Dean of Research and Development at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune. He heads the Laboratory of Chromatin Biology and Epigenetics at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune. He is the founder of the Centre of Excellence in Epigenetics at IISER Pune and is known for his studies on higher-order chromatin architecture and how it influences spatiotemporal changes in gene expression. He is an elected fellow of the Indian National Science Academy and the Indian Academy of Sciences and a recipient of the National Bioscience Award for Career Development of the Department of Biotechnology. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, in 2010, for his contributions to biological sciences.
Usha Ranjan Ghatak (1931–2005) was an Indian synthetic organic chemist, stereochemist and the director of the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS). He was known for his contributions in developing novel protocols of stereoselective synthesis of diterpenoids. He was an elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences and the Indian National Science Academy. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, in 1974, for his contributions to chemical sciences.
Mihir Chowdhury FNA, FASc was an Indian physical chemist and Professor and Head of Department of Chemistry at Presidency College, Kolkata and at the Department of Physical Chemistry of the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS). He is known for his studies on the electronic structure of molecules using optical, magneto-optical and quantum-mechanical methods. He was an elected fellow of the Indian National Science Academy and the Indian Academy of Sciences. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, in 1977, for his contributions to chemical sciences. Three of his research students were also Shanti Swarup Bhatnager awardees.
Paramasivam Natarajan (1940–2016) was an Indian photochemist, the INSA Senior Scientist at the National Centre for Ultrafast Process of the University of Madras and the director of Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute (CSMCRI) of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research. He was known for his research on photochemistry of co-ordination compounds and macromolecular dye coatings for stabilization of electrodes. He was an elected fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) and the Indian Academy of Sciences. He is known for his studies on conjugated organic systems and low-dimensional solids and is an elected fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, the Indian Academy of Sciences and The World Academy of Sciences. Siva Umapathy is a Professor of the Department of Inorganic and Physical Chemistry and also at the department of Instrumentation and Applied Physics at the Indian Institute of Science. He was the Director of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Bhopal (IISER). He is known for his studies of molecular dynamics using Raman spectroscopy. Samaresh Bhattacharya is an Indian inorganic and organometallic chemist and a professor of the department of chemistry at Jadavpur University. He also serves as a dean of the faculty of science at the university. He is known for his studies on the coordination compounds of the Platinum Group Metals with regard to their use in the activation of organic molecules. He is an elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences and the West Bengal Academy of Science and Technology. Rahul Banerjee is a Bengali Indian organic chemist and a professor at the department of chemical sciences of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Kolkata. Banerjee, a fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, is known for his studies in the field of Metal–organic framework designing. Tapas Kumar Maji is a professor in the Chemistry and Physics of Materials Unit at Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bengaluru with research interests in topics related to porous materials, nanoscale metal-organic frameworks and composites and functional gel materials. Maji obtained his MSc degree in inorganic chemistry from Burdwan University in 1997 and PhD degree from Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science in 2002. He did a post-doctoral fellowship at Kyoto University, Japan (2003–05).
