Satinder Vir Kessar (born 9 June 1932) is an Indian synthetic organic chemist, academic and an Emeritus professor of Panjab University. [1] He is known for his researches in steroidal and heterocyclic chemistry. [2] He is an elected fellow of The World Academy of Sciences [3] and all the three major Indian science academies, viz. The Indian National Science Academy, [4] the Indian Academy of Sciences [5] and the National Academy of Sciences, India. [6] The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, in 1972, for his contributions to chemical sciences. S. V. Kessar was born in Hoshiarpur, in the undivided Punjab of British India on 9 June 1932 to Durga Dass, a lawyer and his homemaker wife, Susheela Devi. [8] His schooling was at DAV Senior Secondary School, Hoshiarpur and later at Indian Military Academy after which he graduated in chemistry from Panjab University in 1953. While continuing his studies at the same institution for MSc by research, [note 1] he appeared for the Civil Services Examination in 1953 and stood among the top 100 candidates. [9] Choosing to pursue a career in chemistry, he passed MSc (hons) and moved to the US to join the University of Southern California where he studied under the guidance of M. C. Kloetzel to secure a PhD in 1958. [4] He stayed in the US for a while more to complete his post-doctoral studies at the laboratory of S. W. Benson and returned to India to start his career as an assistant professor at PEC University of Technology (then known as Punjab Engineering College). Returning to his alma mater, Panjab University in 1959 as a lecturer, he spent the rest of his academic career there where he served as a Reader (from 1963) and as a Professor (from 1974). On his superannuation from service, he was made the Emeritus Professor of the university. In between, he also served as a CSIR Distinguished Chair from 1992 to 1997, the first professor to hold the position. [4]

Kessar is married to Urmi, his colleague at Panjab University and an art historian and they have two daughters, Bindu and Radha. [8] The couple lives in Chandigarh. [6]

Legacy

Kessar's days with S. M. Mukherji during his master's degree research produced the first of his several articles, A Novel Synthesis of 4-Methyl-1 : 2-Benzanthracene which was published in Nature in 1954. [10] Later, he worked on the synthesis of pyrrolines which earned him his doctoral degree in 1958. [11] Through his later day researches, he built the infrastructure of solanum alkaloids, accomplished the synthesis of azasteroids using a new pathway, and developed a protocol for linking aromatic rings which he utilized for the synthesis of the phenanthridine ring system and other heterocyclic systems as well as the synthesis of aporphine and related alkaloids. [12] Among the other natural products and drugs he synthesized include steroidal sapogenins, phenanthridine, aporphine, quinculidine, dextrophan and venlafaxine. [4] He also elucidated the mechanistic pathways of the transformations and developed methodologies for benzyne cyclisation of anils and Lewis acid- promoted lithiation, [13] both have since become standard synthetic procedures. [14]

Kessar has authored several articles detailing his research findings which have been published in peer-reviewed journals. [note 2] He holds patent for one of the processes he has developed. [15] He served the executive council of Panjab University Alumni Association during 2014–15 [16] and has written a book on the city of Jaisalmer. [8] He also serves a member of the councils of the National Academy of Sciences, India [17] and the Indian National Science Academy (INSA) and was the vice president of INSA Council during 1993–94. Awards and honors

Besides being a National Fellow of the University Grants Commission of India (1976–78) and an elected fellow of The World Academy of Sciences (1998), [3] Kessar is an elected fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India,(1996), [6] Indian National Science Academy (1977) and the Indian Academy of Sciences (1975) [3] and an honorary fellow of the Punjab Academy of Sciences. [18] The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, one of the highest Indian science awards, in 1972. [19] Madhya Pradesh Council of Science and Technology awarded him the Jawaharlal Nehru National Science Award in 1991 [20] and he received the Golden Jubilee Commemoration Medal of the Indian National Science Academy in 1992; [21] INSA would honor him again in 1996 with the Meghnad Saha Medal. [22] The Association Award of the Indian Science Congress reached him in 2008 [23] as well as the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Indian Chemical Society and he has delivered the Basudev Banerjee Memorial Lecture of the society. He is also a recipient of the Prem Singh Medal, Gold Medal of Chemical Research Society of India, Hari Om Award and the Goyal Prize of the Kurukshetra University. Tuticorin Raghavachari Govindachari FNA, FASc (1915–2001), popularly known as TRG, was an Indian natural product chemist, academic, institution builder and the principal of Presidency College, Chennai. He was known for his studies on the synthesis of isoquinolines and phenanthridines and his contributions in elucidating the structure of several plant constituents. He was an elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences and the Indian National Science Academy and was the nominator of Robert Burns Woodward who won the 1965 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, in 1960, for his contributions to chemical sciences, making him the first recipient of the award in the chemical sciences category.

Ram Charan Mehrotra was an Indian analytical and organometallic chemist, academic, educationist and the vice chancellor of the Universities of Delhi and Allahabad. He was known for his studies on the chemical theory of indicators, alkoxides and carboxylates of many elements. He was an elected fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, Indian Chemical Society, Chemical Society of London, Royal Institute of Chemistry, National Academy of Sciences, India and Indian Academy of Sciences. Manojit Mohan Dhar (1927–2003) was an Indian natural product chemist and the director of Central Drug Research Institute. He was known for his researches on peptides and the synthesis of the internucleotide bond and was an elected fellow of the Indian National Science Academy. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, in 1971, for his contributions to chemical sciences.

Usha Ranjan Ghatak (1931–2005) was an Indian synthetic organic chemist, stereochemist and the director of the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS). He was known for his contributions in developing novel protocols of stereoselective synthesis of diterpenoids. He was an elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences and the Indian National Science Academy. Mihir Kanti Chaudhuri is an Indian inorganic chemist and a former vice chancellor of Tezpur University. Mariappan Periasamy is an Indian organometallic chemist and a professor at the School of Chemistry of the University of Hyderabad. He is known for his experiments using carbon metal bonds for constructing diverse types of molecular structures, and is an elected fellow of the Indian National Science Academy and the Indian Academy of Sciences The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, in 1996, for his contributions to chemical sciences.

Adusumilli Srikrishna (1955–2013) was an Indian organic chemist and a professor at the department of organic chemistry at the Indian Institute of Science. He was known for his researches on radical cyclisation and natural products synthesis. He was an elected fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, National Academy of Sciences, India and the Indian Academy of Sciences. Ganesh Prasad Pandey is an Indian organic chemist and scientist at the National Chemical Laboratory. He is known for his research on photo-induced single electron transfer reactions and the synthesis of natural products. Subramania Ranganathan (1934–2016), popularly known as Ranga, was an Indian bioorganic chemist and professor and head of the department of chemistry at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. He was known for his studies on synthetic and mechanistic organic chemistry and was an elected fellow Indian National Science Academy, National Academy of Sciences, India and the Indian Academy of Sciences The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, in 1977, for his contributions to chemical sciences.

Devadas Devaprabhakara was an Indian organic chemist and a professor at the department of chemistry of the Indian Institute of Science. He was known for his studies on cyclic allenes and medium-ring dines. His researches on the reduction, hydroporation and isomerization of them and his synthesis of a number of cyclic hydrocarbons have assisted in rationalizing the understanding of the substrates. He published his researches by way of several peer-reviewed articles; the inline repository of the Indian Academy of Sciences have listed 48 of them. He was also an elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, in 1976, for his contributions to chemical sciences. He died on 12 January 1978, at the age of 45.

Sandeep Verma is an Indian bioorganic chemist and chemical biologist, and a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IITK). At IITK, he heads Sandeep Verma's Research Group in the areas of ordered peptide assemblies, metal-mediated nanoscale systems, programmable soft matter for neuronal regeneration, novel antimicrobials, and small molecule-stem cell modulation. Akkattu T. Biju is an Indian scientist who is an associate professor in the Department of Organic Chemistry at the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. He was awarded the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, Indian national award for excellence in scientific research, for Chemical Sciences for the year 2022, for his work on transition-metal-free carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bond-forming reactions using aryne chemistry and carbene-based organocatalysis.
