History
The Ambassador East opened in 1926. [3] It had been constructed by hoteliers Frank Bering and Ernie Byfield atop the former site of the Huck Brewing Company. [4] The building has seventeen floors. [5]
The hotel received many celebrities in its heyday. [3] Among the who held long-term residence in the hotel were Doris Day, Helen Hayes, Eunice Kennedy, and Lana Turner. [1]
Initially, during Byfield's ownership and operation of the hotel, it did not allow dogs, which has been attributed to a personal dislike Byfield had for them. However, reportedly after an interaction with a small poodle had enchanted Byfield, he revoked this policy and began offering special treatment to the dogs of guests. [4] [6] For many decades, the hotel would be well known for the service it offered catering to the dogs of its guests, with a 1991 Chicago Tribune article reporting on that continued reputation. [6]
The hotel was featured in the film North by Northwest . [7] During the on-site filming of the movie, those working on the film occupied forty of the hotel's rooms, with director Alfred Hitchcock staying in its Mediterranean Suite. Indicative of the hotel's popularity at the time with celebrities, the hotel had to decline a request by the film's star, Cary Grant, to stay in the penthouse suite (which he had stayed in weeks earlier when in Chicago to promote his film Indiscreet ) because it was being used by Judy Garland (who was in town for concert performances). Dunfey Hotels acquired the hotel in 1978 [8] and it was renamed the Ambassador East - A Dunfey Classic Hotel. In 1983, Dunfey Hotels became Omni Hotels, and the hotel became the Omni Ambassador East. Omni renovated the hotel in 1999, at a cost of $20 million. [8] Omni sold the hotel in December 2005 to a joint venture of the Fordham Company, The Harp Group, and Mid-America Development Partners, [9] for $47 million [10] and the hotel returned to its original name. The new owners announced plans to convert the hotel to condominiums, but this never happened. [11]
In April 2010, Ian Schrager purchased the 285-room hotel for $25 million. [12] This sale came during a down market. [10] Schranger renovated the hotel, and reopened it as the PUBLIC Chicago in 2011. [1] [13] Schrager intended for the hotel to be the first in a chain of PUBLIC hotels. [13]
The hotel was sold in 2017 to Shapack Partners and Gaw Capital for $61.5 million, which was considered an underwhelming sale price for the booming hotel market Chicago was experiencing at the time. [1] They hired Journal Hotels to run the hotel as their first Chicago property. [13] The hotel was renamed Ambassador Chicago. [2] [1]
In March 2020, it was announced that the hotel would join Hyatt's "Joie de Vivre Hotels" brand, and that a renovation was planned, with upgrades to the hotel’s 285 rooms and suites, as well as to public spaces, such as its "The Library" lounge. [14] However, after this announcement, the hotel was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and ultimately was closed for nearly a year. [5]
In October 2022, it was reported that Gaw Capital had hired the hotel real estate brokers RobertDouglas to sell the property. RobertDouglas has marketed the property to buyers as having potential either as a continued hotel operation or as an opportunity for redevelopment for another purpose. [5] It is seen as possible that the hotel might be converted into a residential property, such as apartments or senior housing. [4] [15] In July 2023, a $39 million foreclosure lawsuit on the hotel was brought against Gaw Capital by a lender. [16] [17]
The hotel had a sister hotel, the Ambassador West, across the street. [19]
In 1958, the hotel built a new $1 million ballroom named the "Guildhall" on vacant neighboring land it had acquired. The interior was designed by Samuel Abraham Marx. [19] A pair of two extravagant parties were held to christen the new event space. The first party was attended by celebrities such as Douglas Fairbanks Jr., and featured entertainment from Carol Channing. [19]
During their 1959 visit to Chicago, Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh dined at the hotel at a luncheon hosted by Governor William Stratton. [19] [22] This was Elizabeth II's only visit to the city of Chicago. [22]
Like the Ambassador East, the hotel was featured in the film North by Northwest, with its marble front desk used in a scene in which Cary Grant's character is questioned by a clerk. [19]
In 2002, after 80 years of operation, this hotel was liquidated and turned into a condominiums. [19]

The Graduate Providence is an upscale hotel that opened in 1922 as the Providence Biltmore Hotel, part of the Bowman-Biltmore Hotels chain. It is located on the southern corner of Kennedy Plaza at 11 Dorrance Street in downtown Providence, Rhode Island. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977 and is a member of Historic Hotels of America, the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
Ian Schrager is an American entrepreneur, hotelier and real estate developer, credited for co-creating the "boutique hotel" category of accommodation. Originally, he gained fame as co-owner and co-founder of Studio 54.
The Omni Parker House is a historic hotel in Boston, Massachusetts, founded in 1855. The current hotel structure dates to 1927. Located at the corner of School Street and Tremont, not far from the seat of the Massachusetts state government, the hotel has long been a rendezvous for politicians. The Omni Parker House is a member of Historic Hotels of America, the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
The Blackstone Hotel is a historic 290-foot (88 m) 21-story hotel on the corner of Michigan Avenue and Balbo Drive in the Michigan Boulevard Historic District in the Loop community area of Chicago, Illinois. Gramercy Park Hotel was a luxury hotel located at 2 Lexington Avenue, in the Gramercy Park neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, adjacent to the park of the same name. It was known for its rich history. Originally opened in 1925, the hotel ceased operations in 2020 and was purchased by MCR Hotels in 2023 with plans to re-open in 2025.

The Royalton Hotel is a hotel at 44 West 44th Street in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, United States. The hotel, opened in 1898, was designed by architecture firm Rossiter & Wright and developed by civil engineer Edward G. Bailey. The 13-story building is made of brick, stone, terracotta, and iron. The hotel's lobby, which connects 43rd and 44th Streets, contains a bar and restaurant. The upper stories originally featured 90 apartments, but these were replaced with 205 guestrooms when Philippe Starck and Gruzen Samton Steinglass Architects converted the Royalton to a boutique hotel in the 1980s.
The Congress Theater is a historic movie palace in the Logan Square neighborhood of Chicago. Fridstein and Company designed it in 1926 for the movie theater operator Lubliner and Trinz. It features ornate exterior and interior design work in a combination of the Classical Revival and Italian Renaissance styles. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017.
The Pump Room was a restaurant established on October 1, 1938 by Ernie Byfield. It closed in 2017, then reopened under different names. It is located in the Ambassador Chicago hotel, formerly known as the Ambassador East, on the northeast corner of State Parkway and Goethe Street in Chicago's Gold Coast area.
Ernest Lessing Byfield was an American hotelier and restaurateur from the 1930s through the 1950s in Chicago, Illinois. Byfield operated the Hotel Sherman Co., including the Ambassador East and West, the Sherman House Hotel, the Fort Dearborn and the Drake hotels and The Pump Room and College Inn restaurants.
The 3rd Chicago Film Critics Association Awards were announced on March 7, 1991, during a ceremony at The Pump Room of the Omni Ambassador East Hotel. They honored the finest achievements in 1990 filmmaking. The nominees were announced on January 20, 1991. Goodfellas received the most nominations with seven, followed by Dances with Wolves with four. The former won the most awards with four, including Best Film. Actresses Kathy Bates and Joan Cusack earned two nominations each. This year was also notable for the introduction of two new categories: Best Cinematography and Best Screenplay.
The Hotel Carter was a hotel at 250 West 43rd Street, near Times Square, in the Midtown Manhattan neighborhood of New York City. Opened in June 1930 as the Dixie Hotel, the 25-story structure originally extended from 43rd Street to 42nd Street, although the wing abutting 42nd Street has since been demolished. The hotel originally contained a bus terminal at its ground level, which was closed in 1957, as well as a bar and restaurant immediately above it. The upper stories originally contained 1,000 rooms but were later downsized to 700 rooms.
Omni Hotels & Resorts is an American privately held, international hotel company based in Dallas, Texas. The company was founded in 1958 as Dunfey Hotels, and operates 51 properties in the United States and Canada, totaling over 20,010 rooms and employing more than 23,000 people.
Tru was a French restaurant located in the Streeterville neighborhood in Chicago. Tru was opened in 1999 by Rick Tramonto and Gale Gand with the backing of Rich Melman's Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises. It was a Michelin one-star restaurant since the Chicago guidebook's inception in 2011; in 2017 the restaurant was awarded two Michelin stars. Since 2008, the Executive Chef was Anthony Martin. The restaurant closed on October 7, 2017.
The St. Regis Chicago, formerly Wanda Vista Tower, is a 101-story, 1,198 ft (365 m) multi-use supertall skyscraper in Chicago, Illinois. Construction started in August 2016, and was completed in 2020. Upon completion it became the city's third-tallest building at 1,198 ft (365 m), behind the Willis Tower and Trump Hotel and Tower, and surpassing the Aon Center. It is the tallest structure in the world designed by a woman. It forms a part of the Lakeshore East development and overlooks the Chicago River near Lake Michigan.
The Omni Berkshire Place hotel is located at 21 East 52nd Street, near Madison Avenue, in Midtown Manhattan in New York City. It is owned and operated by Omni Hotels & Resorts. The hotel was also inducted into Historic Hotels of America, the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, in 2010.
