Andover High School was a public high school in Bloomfield Township, Oakland County, Michigan, near Bloomfield Hills and in Greater Detroit. [1] [2] It was a part of the Bloomfield Hills School District. The school's final principal was Rob Durecka. [3] The school teams were known as the Andover Barons.[ citation needed ]

In 2010, the decision was made to merge Andover and Lahser High schools and build a single high school on the current Andover property. [4] [5] [6]

In 2013 it was merged into Bloomfield Hills High School, which is located on the former Andover campus. [7] The new combined high school opened in the fall of 2015. [8] [9]

History

Andover High School, originally named Bloomfield Hills High School, opened in the fall of 1931. It presided on Vaughan Road, built on land donated to the district by George Gough Booth. In 1936, Bloomfield Hills High School had its first graduating class of only eight students. Due to the expanding population growth in the area, a larger school was necessary. This came into fruition in 1955 when Bloomfield Hills High School moved to its new location on Andover Road. However, sizing again became a problem, only this time a new school was built. In 1967, it was renamed Andover High School, as a second high school, Lahser, opened in the district. The two schools merged in 2013 to become the new Bloomfield Hills High School.

Academics

Over 98% of Andover's graduates attended college after graduation, and the actual graduation rate was about 97%. Average SAT scores for Andover were (1233/1600), above the national average. Two Andover alumni have won the Rhodes Scholarship to study at the University of Oxford, in the UK. Wen Shi (Johns Hopkins University) won the award in 2003, and Abdul El-Sayed (University of Michigan) won it in 2008. One Andover alumnus won the Goldwater Scholarship, Andrew Zureick (Dartmouth College), in 2012 for excellence in the sciences.

The Andover Shield was Andover High School's award-winning newspaper. In recent years, the newspaper and its staff have won many MIPA awards and was first honored with a Spartan award in 2007.

The International Academy (IA) is a public, magnet high school with its main campus located in Bloomfield Township, Oakland County, Michigan, with additional campuses in White Lake Township, Michigan and Troy, Michigan.

Lahser High School was a high school in Bloomfield Township, Oakland County, Michigan, near Bloomfield Hills and in Greater Detroit. It was a part of Bloomfield Hills Schools. The school was opened in 1967. At the time it had 200 students, and enrollment later reached almost 900 students. In 2010, the decision was made to merge the school with sister school Andover High School, on Andover's grounds. In 2020, it was decided that the Lahser campus would become the site of Bloomfield Hills Middle School North following a successful bond proposal. The football program had five consecutive playoff-eligible seasons, 2002–2006, in both class 3 and class 2 MHSAA competition.

Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum is the debut studio album by American rock band Tally Hall, originally released on November 12, 2005. Their previous recordings were all independently produced and distributed demos. All of the tracks on the album are finished versions of their demo tracks featured in Complete Demos, with the exception of "Haiku," which is a completely new song. The album gets its name from a museum of mechanized curiosities that is located in Farmington Hills, Michigan. The album's cover art is also based on a number of machines located within the museum.

WBFH, also known as The Biff, is a community radio station that has operated out of Bloomfield Hills High School in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan since October 1, 1976. WBFH now has new studios in a highly visible area off the Commons and Main Street. The new studios have one on air room, three production studios, a work room and a storage room. WBFH broadcasts with 360 watts of power at 88.1 MHz on the FM dial. The signal is directional and can be heard throughout mid-Oakland County. For a period until October 16, 2016, the station was simulcast on 89.5 FM, WAHS, owned by the Avondale School District. The two stations have since resumed separate programming.

Noah Jeremy Arbit is an American politician who has served as a member of the Michigan House of Representatives since 2023. A member of the Democratic Party, Arbit represents Michigan's 20th House District, anchored in West Bloomfield Township, alongside Keego Harbor, Orchard Lake, Sylvan Lake, and portions of Commerce and Bloomfield townships. First elected in the November 2022 general election, Arbit is the youngest LGBTQ+ person ever elected to serve in the Michigan Legislature.
