Andreas Toba (born 7 October 1990 in Hanover) is a German gymnast. [1] He is a four-time Olympian, having represented Germany at the 2012, 2016, 2020, and 2024 Olympic Games.
Toba is the son of former Romanian-German gymnast Marius Toba, who competed at three Olympic Games from 1988 to 2000. [2]
At the 2008 Junior European Championships in Lausanne, Toba won the bronze medal with the German team. Individually he placed seventh on the high bar and ninth in the all-around respectively.
Toba joined the German senior national team in 2009. At the 2009 German Championships, he placed sixth in the all-around; the next year he placed seventh. In 2011 he won bronze on the high bar and placed fourth on the parallel bars and on the pommel horse.
He was selected to represent Germany at the 2012 Olympic Games alongside Philipp Boy, Fabian Hambüchen, Sebastian Krimmer, and Marcel Nguyen. Together they finished seventh as a team. [3]
At the 2013 European Championships Toba finished seventh in the all-around. He made his World Championships debut later that year; however he did not qualify for any finals. At the 2014 European Championships Toba helped Germany finish fourth. At the 2014 World Championships Toba helped Germany finish eighth as a team. Individually he finished sixteenth in the all-around.
In 2015 Toba competed at the São Paulo World Challenge Cup where he won bronze on pommel horse behind Xiao Ruoteng and Zhang Hongtao. [4] He next competed at the 2015 European Games where he helped Germany finish fifth. At the 2016 Olympic Test Event Toba helped Germany finish first as a team. As a result, they qualified a full team to the 2016 Olympic Games. [5]
At the 2016 Olympic Games, Toba competed in on floor exercise in which he sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury. Later, though visibly injured, he completed a pommel horse routine and helped Germany qualify for the finals. [6]
Andreas Toba celebrated his comeback as a member of German national team after long and hard rehabilitation period at the 2017 World Championships in October 2017. He has performed on 2 apparatus (pommel horse with 12,933 points and still rings with 12,900 points). [7]
Toba competed at the 2018 and 2019 World Championships; although Germany failed to qualify to the team final at both, they did manage to qualify a full team to the 2020 Olympic Games at the latter. [8]
In 2020 Toba was selected to compete at the American Cup, an event his father, Marius Tobă, won in 1988. [9] At the competition Toba placed twelfth. [10] The remainder of competitions in 2020 were either canceled or postponed, including the Olympic Games, due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.
Toba returned to competition at the 2021 European Championships. He won silver on horizontal bar behind David Belyavskiy. [11] In June Toba was selected for his third Olympic team alongside Lukas Dauser, Nils Dunkel, and Philipp Herder. [12] At the 2020 Olympic Games Toba helped Germany finish eighth during the team finals. [13]
Toba competed at the European Championships in 2022, 2023, and 2024. He competed at the 2023 DTB Pokal Mixed Cup where he helped Germany win silver behind the team from Japan. [14] During podium training at the 2023 World Championships, Toba injured his knee and was unable to compete. [15] Despite being unable to compete, Germany still managed to qualify a full team to the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris.
In June of 2024 Toba competed at the German national championships where he placed second behind Lukas Dauser. [16] Later that month he was named to the team to compete at the 2024 Olympic Games alongside Dauser, Timo Eder, Nils Dunkel, and Pascal Brendel. [17] At the Olympic Games Germany finished eleventh as a team during qualifications. [18]
Elisabeth Seitz is a German artistic gymnast. She is the 2022 European champion and the 2018 World bronze medalist on the uneven bars. She is one of the only female gymnasts in history to compete the Def release, and her eponymous skill, a full-twisting Maloney. Seitz has also had success in the individual all-around event, where she is the 2011 European silver medalist and an eight-time German national champion. She is a three-time Olympian, representing Germany at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, where she led her team to a sixth-place finish and placed fourth in the uneven bars final, and the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. In 2022, she was part of the first German team to ever win a European team medal.
Marcel Van Minh Phuc Long Nguyen is a retired German artistic gymnast and three-time Olympian, having represented Germany at the 2008, 2012, and 2016 Olympic Games. He is the 2012 Olympic silver medalist in the all-around and on parallel bars as well as the 2011 and 2012 European Champion on the latter. He has been a soldier in the Bundeswehr since July 2007, beginning when he was training in the Bundeswehr Sports Development Group in Munich.
Kim Bui is a retired German artistic gymnast. She represented Germany at the 2012, 2016, and 2020 Olympic Games. She is the 2009 and 2014 German National Champion and the 2011 European bronze medalist on the uneven bars. In her final competition, she was part of the first German team to win a European team medal.
Tisha Manouk Gijs Volleman is a Dutch artistic gymnast and a member of the national team. She won a bronze medal with the Dutch team at the 2018 European Championships. She represented the Netherlands at the 2024 Summer Olympics.
Pauline Sieglinde Schäfer-Betz or Pauline Schäfer is a German artistic gymnast who represented Germany at the 2016, 2020, and 2024 Summer Olympics. She is the 2017 World Champion, the 2021 World silver medalist, and the 2015 World bronze medalist on the balance beam. She was part of the bronze medal-winning German team at the 2022 European Championships.
Lukas Dauser is a German male artistic gymnast and a three-time Olympian, having competed at the 2016, 2020, and 2024 Olympic Games. He is the 2023 World Champion and the 2020 Olympic and 2022 World silver medalist on the parallel bars.
Ferhat Arıcan is a Turkish artistic gymnast. He represented Turkey at the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games. At the 2020 Olympic Games he became the first Turkish gymnast to win an Olympic medal, winning bronze on the parallel bars.
Marios Georgiou is a Cypriot artistic gymnast. He is the 2024 European all-around champion, and the 2022 European horizontal bar champion and the first gymnast from Cyprus to win a European title, and a major all-around title. He is the 2019 European Championships all-around bronze medalist which made him the first gymnast from Cyprus to win a European medal. He is the 2019 European Games parallel bars silver medalist. At the 2018 Commonwealth Games, he won the gold medals in the floor exercise and parallel bars and the bronze medal in the all-around, and he won four bronze medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. He is the 2018 Mediterranean Games all-around and horizontal bar champion and the 2022 Mediterranean Games horizontal bar champion. He competed at the 2016, 2020, and 2024 Olympic Games.
Xiao Ruoteng is a Chinese artistic gymnast. He competed at the 2020 and 2024 Olympic Games, winning five medals. He is the 2017 World all-around champion and the 2018 World pommel horse champion. As a member of the Chinese team, he is a 2018 World champion and a two-time Asian Games champion. He is also the 2017 Asian all-around and pommel horse champion.
Maellyse Brassart is a Belgian artistic gymnast. She represented Belgium at the 2020 Summer Olympics and the 2024 Summer Olympics. She has competed at five World Championships.
Félix Dolci is a Canadian male artistic gymnast. He represented Canada at the 2024 Summer Olympics. He is the 2023 Pan American Games all-around and floor exercise champion and the 2019 Junior World Champion on rings. He has been a member of the Canadian national team since 2017.
Sarah Voss is a German artistic gymnast. She represented Germany at the 2020 Summer Olympics and will represent Germany at the 2024 Summer Olympics. She is the 2019 and 2022 German all-around national champion. She was part of the bronze medal-winning German team at the 2022 European Championships.
Emelie Petz is a retired German artistic gymnast and is a two-time junior national champion.
Leah Grießer is a retired German artistic gymnast. She was a member of the team who won silver at the 2015 European Games and competed for Germany at the 2015 and 2018 World Championships.
Illia Yuriiovych Kovtun is a Ukrainian artistic gymnast. He is the 2023 World all-around silver medalist and 2021 World all-around bronze medalist. Kovtun also won the silver medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics on parallel bars. At the European Championships he is the 2023 European champion on parallel bars as well as a one-time silver medalist and a three-time bronze medalist. Additionally he is a two-time junior world championships medalist.
Zachary Clay is a Canadian artistic gymnast. He is the 2017 Pan American and 2023 Pan American Games champion on pommel horse. He represented Canada at the 2024 Olympic Games.
Nils Dunkel is a German artistic gymnast who represented Germany at the 2020 and 2024 Summer Olympics.
Philipp Herder is a retired German artistic gymnast who represented Germany at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.
Khabibullo Khimayatullah Ergashev is an Uzbekistani artistic gymnast. He qualified to represent Uzbekistan at the 2024 Summer Olympics and finished 41st in the all-around during the qualification round. He won team silver medals at the 2024 Asian Championships and the 2021 Islamic Solidarity Games.
Timo Eder is a German artistic gymnast. He is the 2023 Junior World silver medalist on floor exercise. He will represent Germany at the 2024 Summer Olympics.
