Andrew McMurray is an Alliance Party politician,serving as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for South Down since April 2024. [1] [2]
McMurray was co-opted onto to Newry,Mourne and Down District Council in November 2016,succeeding Patrick Clarke as Alliance councillor in the Slieve Croob District. [3]
McMurray ran in South Down at the 2017 general election,coming last,with 1,814 votes (3.6%). [4] [5]
At the 2019 local elections,he moved to The Mournes District,though was unsuccessful. [6]
McMurray returned to the Council in October 2019,following Gregory Bain's resignation. [7] He retained his seat at the 2023 Council election,being elected on the fourth count. [8] [9]
In April 2024,he replaced Patrick Brown in the Northern Ireland Assembly as member for South Down. [10]
McMurray contested South Down at the 2024 general election,coming fourth with 3,187 votes (7.0%). [11] [12]

Newry and Mourne District Council was a local council in Northern Ireland. It merged with Down District Council in May 2015 under local government reorganisation in Northern Ireland to become Newry,Mourne and Down District Council.
The Mourne Mountains,also called the Mournes or the Mountains of Mourne,are a granite mountain range in County Down in the south-east of Northern Ireland. They include the highest mountains in all of Ulster,the highest of which is Slieve Donard at 850 m (2,790 ft). The Mournes are designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and it has been proposed to make the area Northern Ireland's first national park. The area is partly owned by the National Trust and sees many visitors every year. The Mourne Wall crosses fifteen of the summits and was built to enclose the catchment basin of the Silent Valley and Ben Crom reservoirs. The wall,and the area inside it,are owned by Northern Ireland Water.
