Andrzej Bartkowiak, ASC (born 6 March 1950) is a Polish cinematographer and film director based in the United States. [1] [2] [3]
He became known in the 1980's for his partnership with director Sidney Lumet, shooting 11 of his films between 1981 and 1993. [4]
He later became known as a director of action films, [5] including the Jet Li vehicles Romeo Must Die (2000) and Cradle 2 the Grave (2003), and the video game adaptations Doom (2005) and Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (2009).
Bartkowiak was born and raised in Łódź, and studied at the Łódź Film School from 1970 to 1972.
After graduating, he moved to the United States and settled in New York City, where he worked as a cinematographer and director on dozens of television commercials and industrial films, for clients like IBM, Xerox, American Express, Pepsi, Coca-Cola, and Toyota. He also worked for several years in Italy. [3]
He shot his first feature, the independent feature Deadly Hero , in 1975.
He achieved prominence in the early 1980's through a close association with director Sidney Lumet, beginning with the Oscar-nominated 1981 film Prince of the City . He shot almost of all of Lumet's films, 11 in total, between 1981 and 1993. He also worked with other prominent directors, like John Huston, James L. Brooks, James Ivory, Martin Ritt and William Friedkin.
Three of his films in the 1980's - The Verdict (1982, dir. Lumet), Terms of Endearment (1983, dir. Brooks), and Prizzi's Honor (1985, dir. Huston) - were Academy Award nominees for Best Picture.
In 2010, he worked as cinematographer in the thriller Trespass , directed by Joel Schumacher, both had collaborated before on Falling Down .
Bartkowiak is a member of the American Society of Cinematographers. [6]
Bartkowiak made his directorial debut with Romeo Must Die, a martial arts action film starring Jet Li and Aaliyah, which grossed $91 million at the box office. [7] A year later he made the action thriller film Exit Wounds starring Steven Seagal, the film was a hit in theaters.[ citation needed ] Cradle 2 the Grave was a moderate success at the box-office.[ citation needed ]
Later he teamed up with Ashok Amritraj's Hyde Park Entertainment and Capcom to direct Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li.
In 2017, he directed the Russian-American co-production film Maximum Impact, starring Alexander Nevsky, Kelly Hu, Mark Dacascos, Tom Arnold, and Danny Trejo.
In 2020, he directed the film Dead Reckoning, with KJ Apa and India Eisley.
Barkowiak was married to actress Diane Venora between 1980 and 1989. They have one daughter, Madzia. [8] He also has a son, named Marco. [3]

Seagal plays Orin Boyd, a Detroit police detective notorious for pushing the limits of the law in his quest for justice. The screenplay is based on a novel of the same name by John Westermann.

Cradle 2 the Grave is a 2003 American action film directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak. It stars Jet Li and DMX. The film follows the story of Tony Fait (DMX), a skilled jewel thief who finds himself entangled in a dangerous situation when a heist goes wrong. During a robbery, Tony inadvertently steals a cache of black diamonds sought after by a ruthless crime lord named Ling. To retrieve the diamonds, Ling kidnaps Tony’s daughter, compelling him to team up with a Taiwanese intelligence officer named Su. Together, Tony and Su navigate the underworld of Los Angeles, facing off against formidable adversaries and executing daring heists to rescue Tony’s daughter and thwart Ling’s nefarious plans.
Romeo Must Die is a 2000 American action film directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak in his directorial debut, and features fight choreography by Corey Yuen. The film stars Jet Li, Aaliyah, Isaiah Washington, Russell Wong, DMX, and Delroy Lindo. The film marks Aaliyah's only film that was released during her lifetime, before she was killed in a plane crash one year later on August 25, 2001. The plot is loosely related to William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, transplanted to contemporary Oakland with Black-American and Chinese-American gangs representing the feuding families.
Yuen Woo-ping is a Hong Kong martial arts choreographer and film director who worked in Hong Kong action cinema and later Hollywood films. He is one of the inductees on the Avenue of Stars in Hong Kong. Yuen is also a son of Yuen Siu-tien, a martial arts film actor. He attended the China Drama Academy for one year as a day student of Master Yu Jim-yuen as well.
Corey Yuen Kwai was a Hong Kong film director, film producer, action choreographer, and actor. Yuen attended the China Drama Academy and was one of the Seven Little Fortunes. In Hong Kong, he worked on several films such as Bruce Lee's Fist of Fury (1972), Hwang Jang-lee's Snuff Bottle Connection, Secret Rivals 2, The Invincible Armour, Dance of the Drunk Mantis (1979), Ninja in the Dragon's Den (1982), Millionaire's Express (1986), and Jet Li's Fong Sai-yuk II (1993), The New Legend of Shaolin (1994), High Risk, and My Father Is a Hero.
Diane Venora is an American stage, television and film actress. She graduated from the Juilliard School in 1977 and made her film debut in 1981 opposite Albert Finney in Wolfen. She won the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Supporting Actress for Bird (1988). Her other films include The Cotton Club (1984), Ironweed (1987), Heat (1995), Romeo + Juliet (1996), The Jackal (1997), The Insider (1999) and Hamlet (2000).
Shou Wan-por, known professionally as Robin Shou, is a Hong Kong-American actor, martial artist and stuntman. Born in British Hong Kong but raised in Los Angeles, Shou's interest in martial arts developed during his years as a University student. This led him to win several championships as a martial artist, both in China and the United States. He entered the Hong Kong film industry as a stuntman in the late 1980's, and went on to star in films such as City War (1988), opposite Chow Yun-Fat, and Tiger Cage 2 (1990), opposite Donnie Yen.
William Ashman Fraker, A.S.C., B.S.C. was an American cinematographer, film director and producer. He was nominated five times for the Academy Award for Best Cinematography. In 2000, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) honoring his career. Fraker graduated from the USC School of Cinematic Arts in 1950.

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li is a 2009 American martial arts action film based upon the Street Fighter video game series produced by Capcom. Directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak from a screenplay written by Justin Marks, the film serves as a non-canonical spin-off and theatrical tie-in to Street Fighter IV (2008). The story follows the quest of Street Fighter character Chun-Li, played by Kristin Kreuk, before the events of the original Street Fighter. The film co-stars Neal McDonough as M. Bison, Chris Klein as Charlie Nash, Michael Clarke Duncan as Balrog, and Black Eyed Peas member Taboo as Vega.
