Water polo is a competitive team sport played in the water between two teams. The game consists of four quarters in which the two teams attempt to score goals by throwing the ball into the opposing team's goal. The team with the most goals at the end of the game wins the match. Each team is made up of six field players and one goalkeeper. Except for the goalkeeper, players participate in both offensive and defensive roles. Water polo is typically played in an all-deep pool meaning that players cannot touch the bottom.

The FINA Water Polo World League is an international water polo league organized by FINA, which plays annually, typically from winter through to June. League play features continental tournaments for men and women, from which the top teams emerge to play in the championship tournament where the league champion team is crowned. Men's league play began in 2002, to capitalize on increased worldwide popularity of water polo created by the 2000 Olympic Games, especially in Europe, North America and Australia. The women’s league was added in 2004, based on growing interest in women's play.

Bradley Darrell Schumacher is an American former competition swimmer, water polo player, and Olympic gold medalist. Schumacher is a two-time, two-sport Olympian. He was a member of the winning relay teams at the 1996 Summer Olympics. Four years later, he was a member of the U.S. men's water polo team at the 2000 Summer Olympics.

Australian National Water Polo League

The National Water Polo League is the premier Australian domestic water polo competition. The men's league began in 1990 and the women's league started in 2004. Twelve clubs compete in the league, each fielding a women's and a men's team. As of 2012 five clubs are based in Sydney, two in Brisbane, and one each in Adelaide, Fremantle, Melbourne, Newcastle and Perth.

The Montenegrin First League of Water Polo is the national professional water polo league in Montenegro. It was established in 2006. shortly after Montenegro declared its independence from Serbia and Montenegro. It is organized by the Water Polo and Swimming Federation of Montenegro.
Three clubs from Montenegrin League are playing in Adriatic Water Polo League.

The Asia Swimming Federation (AASF) overseas international aquatics competition in Asia, and is affiliated to the Olympic Council of Asia and to FINA.

Panionios G.S.S., the Pan-Ionian Gymnastics Club of Smyrna, is a Greek multi sport club founded in 1890. Originally based in Smyrna/Izmir, the club was uprooted in the population exchange between Greece and Turkey following the Asia Minor Catastrophe in 1922. It is now based in the Athenian suburb of Nea Smyrni, in Greece, where many of the refugees from Smyrna settled.

Han Zhidong is a male Chinese water polo player who was part of the gold medal winning team at the 2006 Asian Games. He competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics. In 2010, as part of the china team, he competed in the 14th FINA Men's Water Polo World Cup, taking 11th place.

Coast Guard Bears

The United States Coast Guard Academy's intercollegiate sports teams are called the Bears and they compete in NCAA Division III as members of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference. Through the 2016 season, the Bears played football in the New England Football Conference, but after that season moved their football program into the NEWMAC, which started sponsoring the sport in 2017.

Regional Water Polo League Professional water polo league

The Regional Water Polo League, commonly known as the Regional League or Adriatic League, is a regional water polo league in Southeast Europe. Originally, the league featured clubs from Croatia, Montenegro, and Slovenia. In later years, clubs from Serbia joined the league and in one season club from Italy participated in the league.

Rowena Evelyn Webster, known as Rowie Webster, is an Australian water polo centre back and a two-time Olympian. She is one of three Australian players to play more than 300 international games for Australia. She attended Korowa Anglican Girls' School and Arizona State University and completed a Bachelor of Physical Education in Secondary Teaching. As youngster, she played Australian rules football and was involved with surf lifesaving at a national level. She started playing water polo as a twelve-year-old. She has played for the Richmond Tigers, the Victorian State team, Arizona State University and professional sides in Greece and Russia. She has represented Australia as a member of Australia women's national water polo team on both the junior and senior level. Webster is a London Olympic bronze medalist, Junior World Champion, and has been rated in the top 3 players in the world two years in a row. Rowie Webster is the current Australian Women's Water Polo Captain.

Glencora Ralph Australian female water polo player

Glencora Ralph is an Australian water polo centre back/driver. She attended the Curtin University of Technology and is a dental therapist. She competes for the Fremantle Marlins in the National Water Polo League, and was on sides that won the league championship in 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2007. She has been a member of the Australia women's national water polo team on the junior and senior level. She has won gold medals at the 2011 Canada Cup and at the 2007 FINA Junior World Championships. She won silver medals at the 2010 FINA World League Super Finals and at the 2010 FINA Women's Water Polo World Cup. She won a bronze medal at the 2009 FINA World League Super Finals. She was part of the Australian water polo team that won bronze at the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Jane Moran Australian female water polo player

Jane Moran is an Australian water polo player. She won a gold medal at the 2011 Canada Cup and a silver medal at the 2010 FINA World Cup. She was part of the Australian junior national team that competed at the 2005 World Junior Championships held in Perth, Western Australia. She received her first call up to Australia's senior team in order to compete at the 2005 World Championships held in Canada, and also was invited to participate in a 2007 training camp for players who might be selected for the 2008 Summer Olympics, she was considered for that team, but did not make it. She was chosen to represent Australia at the 2012 Summer Olympics, and was a member of Australia's national team that won the bronze medal. At club level, she plays in the Australian National Water Polo League.

Zoe Arancini Australian female water polo player

Zoe Arancini is an Australian club water polo player who plays driver, counter-attacker, or outside shooter. Several of her family members have represented her country in water polo. She plays club water polo in the National Water Polo League for the Fremantle Marlins, where she has won the league championship in 2005, 2007 and 2008 and is coached by her mother. She has represented the country as a member of the Australia women's national water polo team on the junior and senior level, with over eighty appearances for national team between the two levels. She has earned a gold medal at the 2011 Canada Cup, silver medals at the 2010 FINA World League Super Finals and 2010 FINA World Cup, and bronze medals at the 2009 FINA World League Super Finals and 2011 FINA Junior World Championships. She has been included on the roster to represent the country at the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Rebecca Marie Rippon is an Australian water polo player. She represented Australia as a member of the Australia women's national water polo team at the 2004 Summer Olympics and the 2008 Summer Olympics, where she won a bronze medal.

Hossein Nassim Iranian water polo player

Hossein Nassim is an Iranian swimmer. He who was a member of Iran national water polo teams participating in the 1976 Summer Olympics and 1970, 1974, and 1986 Asian Games, and won a gold medal in 1974. Nassim was known for his national records in the backstroke, and his contribution to the Iran men's national water polo team from the early 1970s through the late 1980s. Nassim immigrated to Germany in 1987, and is now a coach and instructor with swim clubs there.

Singapore Swimming Association

Singapore Swimming Association (SSA) is the national governing body for swimming, diving, synchronised swimming, water polo and open water swimming in Singapore. Founded in 1939 as the Singapore Amateur Swimming Association (SASA), the body adopted its current name in 2002. It has been a member of FINA since 1939, and is one of 43 members of the Asia Swimming Federation.

GS Apollon Smyrnis, full name Gymnasticos Syllogos Apollon Smyrnis, literally Gymnastics Society Apollon of Smyrna is a Greek multi-sport club based in Athens. Apollon originally was founded in Smyrni in 1891 and moved to Athens in 1922 after Asia Minor Disaster. The club has got departments in football, basketball, volleyball, waterpolo and other sports. The most successful section is the football team with long presence in A Ethniki. The home stadium of the club is in Rizoupoli, a district of Athens. The club's colours are blue and white and its emblem is the ancient God Apollo.

Water polo at the 2018 Asian Games was held at the GBK Aquatic Stadium, Jakarta, Indonesia from 16 August to 1 September. Ten countries with 9 men's team and 6 women's team participated in the competition.
