Ataxia canescens is a species of beetle in the family Cerambycidae. It was described by Henry Walter Bates in 1880. It is known from Honduras and Mexico. [1]

Ataxia is a neurological sign consisting of lack of voluntary coordination of muscle movements that can include gait abnormality, speech changes, and abnormalities in eye movements. As the disease progresses, people lose their sight and hearing. Other complications include scoliosis and diabetes mellitus.

An estimated 150,000 people in the United States have a diagnosis of spinocerebellar ataxia at any given time. SCA is hereditary, progressive, degenerative, and often fatal. There is no known effective treatment or cure. SCA can affect anyone of any age. The disease is caused by either a recessive or dominant gene. In many cases people are not aware that they carry a relevant gene until they have children who begin to show signs of having the disorder.
