The 1999 Pan American Games, officially the XIII Pan American Games or the 13th Pan American Games, was a major international multi-sport event that was held from July 23 to August 8, 1999, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and surrounding towns and cities. Canoeing competitions started the day before the games officially begun. Approximately 5,000 athletes from 42 nations participated at the games. The 2006 South American Championships in Athletics were held at the Estadio La Independencia in Tunja, Colombia from 29 September to 1 October. The competition represented a departure from the traditional biennial cycle of the championships, a decision taken partly as a response to the lack of major competitions that year for the region's athletes, as well as the fact many athletes would instead focus on the 2007 World Championships in Athletics and the Pan American Games which were scheduled for the following year. The stadium's location at 2810 metres above sea level aided the performances of athletes competing in the sprint and field events. A total of 44 events were contested, of which 22 by male and 22 by female athletes.

Athletics competitions at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara was held from October 23 to October 30 at the newly built Telmex Athletics Stadium. The racewalking and marathon events were held on the temporary Guadalajara Circuit and Route and the Pan American Marathon circuit respectively. The sport of athletics is split into distinct sets of events: track and field events, road running events, and racewalking events.

Bolivia competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, United Kingdom from 27 July to 12 August 2012. Comité Olímpico Boliviano sent a total of 5 athletes to the Games, 3 men and 2 women, to compete only in athletics, shooting, and swimming; all of them had competed in their first Olympics. Three athletes were selected by Universality places, without having qualified. More than half of them were under the age of 25; thus, many of them were expected to reach their peak in time for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Freestyle swimmer Karen Torrez was the nation's flag bearer at the opening ceremony. Bolivia, however, has yet to win its first Olympic medal.

Sebastian Franco is a Colombian racquetball player. Franco is a former International Racquetball Federation (IRF) World Champion in Men's Doubles, winning the title in 2014 with Alejandro Herrera. In 2018, Franco became the first South American to win a tournament on the International Racquetball Tour (IRT), when he won the March Madness event in San Antonio. He finished the IRT's Top 10 four straight seasons – from 2015–16 to 2018–19 – with a career high ranking of 6th in 2017–18.

Athletics competitions at the 2022 South American Games in Asunción, Paraguay will be held from 12 to 15 October 2022 at the Athletics National Center in the Parque Olímpico cluster in Luque, a sub-venue outside Asunción, with the marathon and 35 km racewalks being held at Costanera José Asunción Flores.
