Martina Weil Restrepo (born 12 July 1999) is a Chilean track and field athlete who competes as a sprinter. She is the Chilean national record holder over 400 metres. [1]

Early life

Weil was trained at the Villa María Academy where she was coached by her Olympic medal winning mother Ximena Restrepo, before relocating to Belgium. [2]

Career

Weil became Chile's u20 national champion in the 100 metres and 200 meters at 18 years-old. [3] At the Pan American Youth Games, in Cali in 2021, she finished second in the 400 metres with a time of 52.35, behind the Fiordaliza Cofil. [4]

In May 2023, Weil broke the Chilean national record for the 400 metres, and then proceeded to lower it twice more before clocking 51.07 at the Diamond League event in Silesia, Poland in July 2023. [5] [6]

In November 2023, Weil won a gold medal in the 400 meters Pan American games event in Santiago, Chile, 32 years after her mother claimed silver. [7] At the same championships she was part of a Chilean team who set a new national record for the women’s 4x100m relay to secure a silver medal. [8]

Personal life

She is the daughter of former Olympians; sprinter and Olympic bronze medalist Ximena Restrepo and shot putter Gert Weil. [9]

The men's 200 metres event at the 2016 Summer Olympics took place between 16–18 August in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, at the Estádio Olímpico João Havelange. There were 77 competitors from 48 nations. The event was won by Usain Bolt of Jamaica, his third consecutive gold medal in the event. Bolt earned his eighth overall gold, needing only the 4x100 metres relay the next day to complete the sprint triple-triple. It was Jamaica's fourth victory in the event, second-most among nations. The United States missed the podium for only the fifth time in the history of the men's 200 metres; it was the first time that it had done so in consecutive Games.

Suziann Reid is an American-Jamaican former track and field sprinter who specialized in the 400-meter dash. She set a personal record of 50.74 seconds for the distance in 1999. She was a silver medalist with the American women's 4 × 400-meter relay team at the 1999 World Championships in Athletics. She was part of the World Championship team twice more, in 2001 and 2005, and helped the United States to silver at the 2002 IAAF World Cup and gold at the 2001 Goodwill Games.

The women's 4 × 400 metres relay competition of the athletics events at the 2019 Pan American Games took place on the 10th of August at the 2019 Pan American Games Athletics Stadium. The defending Pan American Games champion is United States.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Marileidy Paulino</span> Dominican Republic sprinter

Marileidy Paulino is a Dominican athlete sprinter specializing in the 400 meters. She won the silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, becoming the first woman from the Dominican Republic to earn an individual Olympic medal in athletics. Paulino took silver at the 2022 World Athletics Championships. At these competitions, she earned also silver and gold in the mixed 4×400 m relay respectively, running legs of 48.7 s in 2021 and 48.47 s in 2022. Since May 2023, Paulino is the 400 m ranked world No. 1.
