Azerbaijan debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 with the song "Day After Day" written by Govhar Hasanzadeh and Zahra Badalbeyli. The song was performed by Elnur and Samir. The Azerbaijani Eurovision entrant for the 2008 contest in Belgrade, Serbia was selected through Land of Fire 2008, organised by the Azerbaijani broadcaster İctimai Television (İTV). The final took place on 2 February 2008 and a fifteen-member jury selected Elnur Hüseynov as the winner. The song "Day After Day", performed in a duet with Samir Javadzadeh, was internally selected and announced on 8 February.

Contents

Azerbaijan was drawn to compete in the first semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest which took place on 20 May 2008. Performing during the show in position 7, "Day After Day" was announced among the 10 qualifying entries of the first semi-final and therefore qualified to compete in the final on 24 May. It was later revealed that Azerbaijan placed sixth out of the 19 participating countries in the semi-final with 96 points. In the final, Azerbaijan performed in position 20 and placed eighth out of the 25 participating countries, scoring 132 points.

Background

On 15 October 2007, the Azerbaijani national broadcaster, İctimai Television (İTV), confirmed their intentions to participate at the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest after becoming an active member of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) on 5 July 2007. [1] [2] İTV would also broadcast the event within Azerbaijan and organise the selection process for the nation's entry. For their 2008 entry, the broadcaster opted to organise a national final titled Land of Fire, which resulted in the selection of a winning performer that would subsequently be given an internally selected song to perform at Eurovision.

Before Eurovision

Land of Fire 2008

Land of Fire 2008 was the national final organised by İTV that selected the Azerbaijani contestant for the Eurovision Song Contest 2008. [3] The competition took place on 2 February 2008 at the Heydar Aliyev Palace in Baku, hosted by Husniyya Maharramova and Ilham Gasimov and was broadcast on İTV as well as streamed online via the broadcaster's website itv.az and the official Eurovision Song Contest website eurovision.tv. [4] The competition was also broadcast in Turkey on TRT2 and TRT Türk, in Georgia on GPB and in Lithuania on LRT. [5] [6]

Format

The national final consisted of two stages. The first stage involved an audition period where interested artists attended auditions. Five artists were shortlisted, three of them which were selected to advance to the second stage, the televised show. In the final on 2 February 2008, the winner as determined by the votes of a thirteen-member jury panel was selected from the three artists who each performed two original songs. [7] [8]

Competing artists

On 14 November 2007, İTV revealed that five potential performers had been shortlisted from 40 artists that attended a casting round held at the Rashid Behbudov State Song Theatre in Baku in October 2007: Aynur Iskenderli, Aytaj Jafarova, Elnur Hüseynov, Erkin Osmanli and Unformal. [10] [11] [12] On 11 January 2008, the three artists selected for the competition based on the decision of İTV and a six-member jury panel were announced. [13] The members of the jury were Azad Rahimov (Minister of Youth and Sports of Azerbaijan), Nargiz Pashayeva (professor), Akif Malikov (Director of the Azerbaijan State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre), Vagif Gerayzade (composer), Faiq Suceddinov (singer and composer) and Tarana Muradova (folk artist and dancer). Final

The final took place on 2 February 2008 where the three artists each performed two original songs. Elnur Hüseynov was selected by the jury as the winner. [15] [16] In addition to the performances of the artists, Turkish Eurovision Song Contest 2003 winner Sertab Erener, Ukrainian Eurovision Song Contest 2004 winner Ruslana and Serbian Eurovision Song Contest 2007 winner Marija Šerifović performed during the show as guests. Song selection

On 8 February 2008, İTV announced that Elnur Hüseynov would be performing the song "Day After Day" at the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 in a duet with Samir Javadzadeh. The selection of the song was based on the decision of İTV and the thirteen-member jury panel of Land of Fire 2008 from the two songs performed by Hüseynov during the national final. [18] [19] In April 2008, a new version of the song was recorded at the Modern World Studios in London, which included additional mugham vocals. [20]

Promotion

Elnur and Samir made several appearances across Europe to specifically promote "Day After Day" as the Azerbaijani Eurovision entry. Elnur and Samir performed "Day After Day" during the Ukrainian Eurovision national final on 23 February, [21] the Greek Eurovision national final Ellinikós Telikós 2008 on 27 February, [22] and the final of the Latvian Eurovision national final Eirodziesma 2008 on 1 March. [23] Between 3 and 5 March, Elnur and Samir took part in promotional activities in Georgia. [24] On 9 May, Elnur and Samir performed during a concert which was held at the Maslak Parkorman venue in Istanbul, Turkey. [25] Elnur and Samir also took part in promotional activities in Andorra, Finland, Malta, Slovenia and the United Kingdom. [10]

At Eurovision

It was announced in September 2007 that the competition's format would be expanded to two semi-finals in 2008. [26] According to the rules, all nations with the exceptions of the host country and the "Big Four" (France, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom) are required to qualify from one of two semi-finals in order to compete for the final; the top nine songs from each semi-final as determined by televoting progress to the final, and a tenth was determined by back-up juries. The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) split up the competing countries into six different pots based on voting patterns from previous contests, with countries with favourable voting histories put into the same pot. On 28 January 2008, a special allocation draw was held which placed each country into one of the two semi-finals. Azerbaijan was placed into the first semi-final, to be held on 20 May 2008. [27] The running order for the semi-finals was decided through another draw on 17 March 2008 and as one of the six wildcard countries, Azerbaijan chose to perform in position 7, following the entry from Belgium and before the entry from Slovenia. [28]

The two semi-finals and final were broadcast in Azerbaijan on İTV with commentary by Isa Melikov and Husniya Maharramova. The Azerbaijani spokesperson, who announced the Azerbaijani votes during the final, was Leyla Aliyeva.

Semi-final

Elnur and Samir took part in technical rehearsals on 11 and 15 May, followed by dress rehearsals on 19 and 20 May. [29] The Azerbaijani performance featured Elnur and Samir dressed as angel and devil, which symbolised the eternal dialogue between good and evil, performing with four dancers. Samir performed on a throne which fell apart towards the end of the song. The performance also incorporated pyrotechnic effects. [30] [31] In regards to the performance, Elnur and Samir stated: "The global main topic at this very moment is war. Everything evil comes from the devil - who is, in fact, just a fallen angel who was expelled from paradise. He symbolizes everything evil which happens on earth. However, he can turn into an angel again, which means winning over all evil. We just hope that this will happen some time soon in our world." [32]

At the end of the show, Azerbaijan was announced as having finished in the top 10 and subsequently qualifying for the grand final. It was later revealed that Azerbaijan placed sixth in the semi-final, receiving a total of 96 points. [33]

Final

Shortly after the first semi-final, a winners' press conference was held for the ten qualifying countries. As part of this press conference, the qualifying artists took part in a draw to determine the running order for the final. This draw was done in the order the countries were announced during the semi-final. Azerbaijan was drawn to perform in position 20, following the entry from France and before the entry from Greece. [34]

Elnur and Samir once again took part in dress rehearsals on 23 and 24 May before the final. The duo performed a repeat of their semi-final performance during the final on 24 May. At the conclusion of the voting, Azerbaijan finished in eighth place with 132 points. [35]

Azerbaijan has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 16 times since making its debut in 2008, after İctimai Televiziya (İTV) became an active member of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). İTV had broadcast the Eurovision Song Contest in previous years, purchasing broadcasting rights from the EBU. Azerbaijan was the last country in the Caucasus to debut in the contest and the first to win.

Greece entered the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 with the song "Secret Combination", written by Konstantinos Pantzis with lyrics by Poseidonas Giannopoulos. The song was performed by Kalomira, an American singer of Greek descent who had previously won a Greek talent show. In February 2008, as part of Ellinikós Telikós 2008, the selection process organized by the Greek national broadcaster Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation (ERT), three competing artists—Chrispa, Kostas Martakis, and Kalomira—performed their prospective entries live during a televised broadcast watched by nearly two million viewers. "Secret Combination" was selected to represent Greece at the Eurovision Song Contest by a combination of a public televote and panel of judges.

Belarus participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 with the song "Hasta la vista" written by Eleonora Melnik and Taras Demchuk. The song was performed by Ruslan Alekhno. The Belarusian entry for the 2008 contest in Belgrade, Serbia was selected through the national final Eurofest 2008, organised by the Belarusian broadcaster National State Television and Radio Company of the Republic of Belarus (BTRC). The national final was a televised production which consisted of a semi-final and a final held on 21 December 2007 and 21 January 2008, respectively. Fifteen competing acts participated in the semi-final where four entries qualified to the final: one entry selected by a public televote and three entries selected by a nine-member jury panel. In the final, the jury panel selected "Hasta la vista" performed by Ruslan Alekhno as the winner.

Moldova participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 with the song "A Century of Love" written by Oleg Baraliuc and Victoria Demici. The song was performed by Geta Burlacu. The Moldovan broadcaster TeleRadio-Moldova (TRM) organised the national final O melodie pentru Europa 2008 in order to select the Moldovan entry for the 2008 contest in Belgrade, Serbia. 27 entries competed to represent Moldova in Belgrade, with 12 being shortlisted to participate in the televised national final which took place on 9 February 2008. "A Century of Love" performed by Geta Burlacu emerged as the winner after gaining the most points following the combination of votes from a jury panel, a TRM committee and a public televote.

Ukraine participated in Eurovision Song Contest 2008 with the song "Shady Lady" written by Karen Kavaleryan, Philip Kirkorov and Dimitris Kontopoulos. The song was performed by Ani Lorak, who was internally selected in December 2007 by the Ukrainian broadcaster National Television Company of Ukraine (NTU) to represent Ukraine at the 2008 contest in Belgrade, Serbia. Her song was selected through a national final held on 23 February 2008. Five songs competed in the national selection and "Shady Lady" was selected as the winning song following the combination of votes from a four-member jury panel and a public televote.

San Marino debuted at the Eurovision Song Contest 2008, held in Belgrade, Serbia. The Sammarinese national broadcaster Radiotelevisione della Repubblica di San Marino (SMRTV) officially confirmed San Marino's participation in the contest in November 2007 after deliberation amongst the broadcaster's shareholders.

Macedonia participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 with the song "Let Me Love You" written by Rade Vrčakovski. The song was performed by Tamara, Vrčak and Adrian. The Macedonian broadcaster Macedonian Radio Television (MRT) organised Skopje Fest 2008 in order to select the Macedonian entry for the 2008 contest in Belgrade, Serbia. Fifteen entries competed in the competition on 23 February 2008 where "Vo ime na ljubovta" performed by Tamara, Vrčak and Adrian was selected following the combination of votes from a five-member jury panel and a public televote. The song was later translated from Macedonian to English for the Eurovision Song Contest and was titled "Let Me Love You".

Russia participated in and won the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 in Belgrade, Serbia. The Russian entry was selected through a national final, Evrovidenie 2008 organised by the Russian broadcaster Rossiya Channel (RTR). Dima Bilan represented Russia with the song "Believe", which qualified from the first semi-final of the competition and won the contest, placing 1st in the final with 272 points.

Croatia participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 with the song "Romanca" written by Miran Hadži Veljković. The song was performed by the band Kraljevi ulice and 75 Cents. The Croatian broadcaster Croatian Radiotelevision (HRT) organised the national final Dora 2008 to select the Croatian entry for the 2008 contest in Belgrade, Serbia. A total of twenty-four entries competed in the national final which consisted of two shows: a semi-final and a final. In the semi-final on 22 February 2008, six entries qualified to compete in the final on 23 February 2008 alongside ten pre-qualified songs. In the final, "Romanca" performed by Kraljevi ulice and 75 Cents was selected as the winner following the combination of votes from a five-member jury panel and a public televote.

Hungary participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 with the song "Candlelight" written by Viktor Rakonczai, Jánosi and Imre Mózsik. The song was performed by Csézy. Songwriter Viktor Rakonczai represented Hungary in the Eurovision Song Contest 1997 as part of the band V.I.P. where they placed twelfth in the competition with the song "Miért kell, hogy elmenj?". The Hungarian entry for the 2008 contest in Belgrade, Serbia was selected through the national final Eurovíziós Dalverseny 2008: Magyarországi döntő, organised by the Hungarian public broadcaster Magyar Televízió (MTV). 15 entries competed in the national final where "Szívverés" performed by Csézy was selected as the winner based on the votes of a four-member jury panel as well as the votes from the public. The song was later translated from Hungarian to English for the Eurovision Song Contest and was titled "Candlelight".

Bulgaria participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 with the song "DJ, Take Me Away" written by Dian Savov. The song was performed by the group Deep Zone and Balthazar. The Bulgarian broadcaster Bulgarian National Television (BNT) organised the national final Bŭlgarskata pesen v „Evroviziya 2008” in order to select the Bulgarian entry for the 2008 contest in Belgrade, Serbia. 56 entries were selected to participate in the first phase of the national final, EuroBGvision, which consisted of three monthly selections. Fourteen entries qualified to compete in Bŭlgarskata pesen v „Evroviziya 2008” which consisted of two shows: a semi-final and a final held on 26 January 2008 and 23 February 2008, respectively. Eighteen entries competed in the semi-final and the top nine songs qualified to the final alongside three pre-qualified songs. In the final, public televoting exclusively selected "DJ, Take Me Away" performed by Deep Zone and Balthazar as the winning entry with 15.37% of the votes.

Elnur Hussein is an Azerbaijani singer. He was the first Azerbaijan's representative to perform "Day After Day" at the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 alongside Samir Javadzadeh as duo Elnur and Samir. In 2015, he won the fourth season of The Voice of Turkey and represented Azerbaijan in the 60th Eurovision Song Contest with the song "Hour of the Wolf".

Latvia participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 with the song "Wolves of the Sea" written by Jonas Liberg, Torbjörn Wassenius, Johan Sahlen and Claes Andreasson. The song was performed by the group Pirates of the Sea. The Latvian broadcaster Latvijas Televīzija (LTV) organised the national final Eirodziesma 2008 in order to select the Latvian entry for the 2008 contest in Belgrade, Serbia. Twenty songs were selected to compete in the national final, which consisted of three shows: two semi-finals and a final. In the semi-finals on 2 and 9 February 2008, five entries were selected to advance from each show: three entries selected based on a public televote and two entries selected by an eight-member jury panel. Samir Javadzadeh is an Azerbaijani pop singer. He was selected as the Azerbaijani representative, along with Elnur Hüseynov, to perform at the Eurovision Song Contest 2008. They performed "Day After Day" finishing 8th overall.

Azerbaijan participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 with the song "Always" written by Arash Labaf, Robert Uhlmann, Marcus Englöf, Johan Bejerholm, Alex Papaconstantinou, Anderz Wrethov and Elin Wrethov. The song was performed by AySel and Arash, which were internally selected by the Azerbaijani broadcaster İctimai Television (İTV) to represent the nation at the 2009 contest in Moscow, Russia. AySel and Arash's selection as the Azerbaijani Eurovision entrants were announced separately on 17 January and 12 February 2009, respectively, while the song "Always" was presented to the public on 3 March 2009.

Azerbaijan participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 with the song "Drip Drop" written by Anders Bagge, Stefan Örn and Sandra Bjurman. The song was performed by Safura. The Azerbaijani Eurovision entrant for the 2010 contest in Oslo, Norway was selected through Land of Fire 2010, organised by the Azerbaijani broadcaster İctimai Television (İTV). Following a semi-final and a final on 2 February and 2 March 2010, respectively, a seven-member jury selected Safura as the winner. The song "Drip Drop" was internally selected and presented to the public on 18 March.

Leyla Mutallim qizi Guliyeva is an Azerbaijani television presenter. On 22, 24 and 26 May 2012 she hosted the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 in Baku, Azerbaijan together with Eldar Gasimov and Nargiz Birk-Petersen.

Azerbaijan participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 with the song "Start a Fire" written by Stefan Örn, Johan Kronlund and Alessandra Günthardt. The song was performed by Dilara Kazimova. The Azerbaijani Eurovision entrant for the 2014 contest in Copenhagen, Denmark was selected through Böyük Səhnə, a talent show organised by the Azerbaijani broadcaster İctimai Television (İTV). Following three elimination shows and a final on 2 March 2014, a five-member jury selected Dilara Kazimova as the winner. The song "Start a Fire" was internally selected and presented to the public on 16 March.

Azerbaijan participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2015 with the song "Hour of the Wolf" written by Sandra Bjurman, Nicolas Rebscher, Nicklas Lif and Lina Hansson. The song was performed by Elnur Hüseynov, who was internally selected by the Azerbaijani broadcaster İctimai Television (İTV) in March 2015 to represent the nation at the 2015 contest in Vienna, Austria. Hüseynov had previously represented Azerbaijan in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2008 together with Samir Javadzadeh where they placed eighth with the song "Day After Day". The song "Hour of the Wolf" was presented to the public on 15 March.

Azerbaijan participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 with the song "Miracle" written by Amir Aly, Jakke "T.I Jakke" Erixson and Henrik Wikström. The song was performed by Samra, who was internally selected by the Azerbaijani broadcaster İctimai Television (İTV) to represent the nation at the 2016 contest in Stockholm, Sweden. Samra's selection as the Azerbaijani Eurovision entrant was announced on 10 March 2016, while the song "Miracle" was presented to the public on 13 March.
