Basketball team sport played on a court with baskets on either end

Basketball is a team sport in which two teams, most commonly of five players each, opposing one another on a rectangular court, compete with the primary objective of shooting a basketball through the defender's hoop while preventing the opposing team from shooting through their own hoop. A field goal is worth two points, unless made from behind the three-point line, when it is worth three. After a foul, timed play stops and the player fouled or designated to shoot a technical foul is given one or more one-point free throws. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins, but if regulation play expires with the score tied, an additional period of play (overtime) is mandated.

Amsterdam Capital of the Netherlands

Amsterdam is the capital city and most populous municipality of the Netherlands. Its status as the capital is mandated by the Constitution of the Netherlands, although it is not the seat of the government, which is The Hague. The Amsterdam metropolitan area comprises much of the northern part of the Randstad, one of the larger conurbations in Europe, which has a population of approximately 8.1 million.

History

The club was founded in 2011, as a result of a merger between BV Lely and Mosquitos, both clubs from Amsterdam. The club played on the license of the old ABC Amsterdam second team. [1] In the first season of the club, Apollo played as an amateur team in the Promotiedivisie. They immediately won the Dutch amateur championship.

Promotiedivisie is the second tier of basketball in the Netherlands and is the highest amateur competition in the country. At the end of a Promotiedivisie-season, a Final Four is played to decide the new champion. The champion earns the right to promote to the Dutch Basketball League, although it only happens in exceptional cases, because a club has to become professional to play in the league.

In the 2012 the club decided to enter the Dutch Basketball League for the 2012–13 season. [2] In the first season Apollo, led by All-Star Aron Royé, ended on the 9th place in the DBL.

The 2012–13 Dutch Basketball League was the 53rd season of the Dutch Basketball League, the highest professional basketball league in the Netherlands. The season started on 6 October 2012 and ended on 23 May 2013.

In 2014–15 the club played under coach Jaanus Liivak. The beginning was very tough for Apollo, but later on the club started to win more games and even had the chance to reach the playoffs. After winning against Rotterdam Basketbal, Apollo couldn't get the last two games and didn't go to the playoffs.
