Banani is an upscale residential and commercial neighbourhood and a thana of Dhaka. [3] [4] It hosts five-star hotels, upscale restaurants, luxury apartments, international schools, and the offices of many local and multinational companies. [5] [6] Banani is considered an important central business district, and its commercial landscape is among the most important in Dhaka, coming after the likes of the nearby financial district of Gulshan Avenue, Karwan Bazar, Tejgaon Industrial Area and downtown Motijheel CBD, the nation's largest and most important CBD. Geography

Banani is located at 23°47′42″N90°24′17″E / 23.7950°N 90.4047°E / 23.7950; 90.4047 . It has a lake called Banani Lake. [9] [10] Korail slum is located on the border of Banani. [11] It is a part of Ward No. 19 of DNCC. [12] [13] [14]

History

In November 2016, the Dhaka North City Corporation demolished the home of former East Pakistan Governor Abdul Monem Khan. [15]

In 2019, 19 were killed in the FR Tower fire. [16]

According to the 2011 Census of Bangladesh, the population of Banani was 24,718. [17]

Mohakhali General Market is situated beside the flyover bridge close to the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway.

There are mainly three areas diplomatic zone mainly in the south-west portion, general residential area in eastern portion and an adjacent DOHS area in north-east portion.

It was showcased in the Cooper–Hewitt, National Design Museum in New York City. The Banani graveyard is a cemetery in the Banani neighbourhood of Dhaka. It is one of eight state-run graveyards in Dhaka and, with a capacity for around 22,000 graves, one of the largest graveyards in that city. It covers approximately 10 acres and two to three burials take place every day. Banani graveyard is the resting place for a number of notable Bangladeshis, amongst them the victims of the coup d'ètat of August 15, 1975. The graveyard was established in 1973.
