Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Shariatpur Agriculture University is a public university under the auspices of the Government of Bangladesh. On 6 October 2021, the Government of Bangladesh approved the establishment of this university. [1] [2] [3] [4]
On June 10, 2021, former deputy water resources minister AKM Enamul Haque Shamim, Iqbal Hossain Apu and Nahim Razzak, three former parliamentarians from Shariatpur together gave a semi-official letter to the education minister. On January 9, 2022, the cabinet gave in-principal approval to the draft of the Sheikh Hasina Agricultural University Act, 2022. Plans were taken up to establish the university at Shariatpur. The prime minister approved the project on October 6, 2020. [5] [6] [7]
On 12 June 2023, the cabinet gave final approval to change the name of Sheikh Hasina Agricultural University to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Agricultural University. [8]
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, popularly known by the Bangabandhu was a Bangladeshi politician, revolutionary, statesman, activist and diarist, who was the founding leader of Bangladesh. As the leader of Bangladesh, he had held continuous positions either as Bangladesh's president or as its prime minister from April 1971 until his assassination in August 1975. His nationalist ideology, socio-political theories, and political doctrines are collectively known as Mujibism.
Sheikh Hasina is a Bangladeshi politician who served as the tenth prime minister of Bangladesh from June 1996 to July 2001 and again from January 2009 to August 2024. She is the daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the first president of Bangladesh. She served in the position of prime minister for over 20 years, making her the longest-serving prime minister in history of Bangladesh. Thus, she became the world's longest-serving female head of government. Her authoritarian regime ended in self-imposed exile following an uprising in 2024.

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the first president of Bangladesh, was assassinated along with most of his family members during the early hours of 15 August 1975 by a group of Bangladesh Army personnel who invaded his residence as part of a coup d'état. Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University is the oldest agriculture educational institution in South Asia, situated in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka, Bangladesh. It was established on 11 December 1938 as Bengal Agricultural Institute (BAI) by Sher-e-Bangla A. K. Fazlul Huq, then the Chief Minister of undivided Bengal and later upgraded to university in 2001 renamed it as Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University.

Mujib was assassinated with most members of his family in this residence. The museum was listed as a national heritage site in 2009 by RAJUK and was largely damaged in a mob violence in 2024.
