The name is derived from the Celtic Clun for a river.

The road then heads to the north-west, passing through Renishaw where it crosses the River Rother. The road continues north, crossing The Moss at Eckington before continuing north through Mosborough, forming the High Street, and Frecheville where it becomes Birley Moor Road. The road continues onto Intake where it becomes Mansfield Road, continuing north to meet Manor Top at the junction with the A6102. The road then continues north-west as City Road, passing the City Road Cemetery and forming Granville Road. It enters the Sheffield City Centre at the junction with the A61. The road multiplexes at this point with the A61 road, before reappearing at Derek Dooley Way at Park Square.
The Rodes Baronetcy, of Barlborough in the County of Derby, was a title in the Baronetage of England. It was created on 14 August 1641 for Francis Rodes, of Barlborough Hall, near Chesterfield, Derbyshire. The early family of Rodes was seated in Nottinghamshire. A William Rodes acquired an estate in Derbyshire by marriage. Sir Francis Rodes built Barlborough Hall in 1583–4. The first Baronet was his grandson. The title became extinct on the death of the fourth Baronet in 1743, when the estates passed to his sister's heirs, the Heathcotes and Heathcote-Rodes families.
