Basanti Devi is an Indian environmentalist. She has been concerned with preserving trees in Uttarakhand. She was awarded the highest award for women in India, the Nari Shakti Puraskar in 2016.
Devi spent her adolescence near Kausani [1] in the Lakshmi Ashram which is a Gandhian ashram for young girls founded by Sarla Behn. [2] She ended up there in 1980 after her husband died as she was a widow at a very young age after being married at the age of twelve. [1] She had been to school before she married but she was only just able to read. At the Ashram she continued to study after reaching the 12th standard, and she became interested in teaching. The wages were poor but her father approved of the work. [1]
She became an environmentalist. She has been concerned with preserving trees in Uttarakhand. [3]
The Kosi River is an important resource in Uttarakhand. [1] The river is responsible for major flooding in Bihar that can affect tens of thousands of hectares of land and a million people. [4] Devi read an article that estimated that the river would cease to exist in a decade if the felling of trees continued at the current rate. She went to speak to local women explaining that this was their forest and their land and asking what they would do once the river had dried up. This began to convince people. [1]
She began a negotiation. It was agreed that the villagers and the timber companies would cease to cut new wood. Villagers agreed that they would only burn old wood. [1] Devi organised community groups [3] and the villagers realised that they needed to conserve their wealth and they would volunteer to fight forest fires. The effects have been slow to see but it is noted that springs that used to dry up in the summer now run all year. Moreover, the forest shows more diversity with more broad leafed trees like oak, rhododendron and myrica esculenta plants appearing. [1]
In March 2016 Devi went to New Delhi where she was awarded the highest award for women in India, the Nari Shakti Puraskar. [5]
Sarala Behn was an English Gandhian social activist whose work in the Kumaon region of India helped create awareness about the environmental destruction in the Himalayan forests of the state. She played a key role in the evolution of the Chipko Movement and influenced a number of Gandhian environmentalists in India including Chandi Prasad Bhatt, Bimala behn and Sunderlal Bahuguna. Along with Mirabehn, she is known as one of Mahatma Gandhi's two English daughters. The two women's work in Garhwal and Kumaon, respectively, played a key role in bringing focus on issues of environmental degradation and conservation in independent India.
The Nari Shakti Puraskar is an annual award given by the Ministry of Women and Child Development of the Government of India to individual women or to institutions that work towards the cause of women empowerment. It is the highest civilian honour for women in India, and is presented by the president of India on International Women's Day at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. The award was instituted in 1999 under the title of Stree Shakti Puraskar, renamed and reorganised in 2015. It is awarded in six institutional and two individual categories, which carry a cash prize of 200,000 and 100,000 rupees, respectively.

Latika Thukral is an Indian banker who transformed her city, in particularAravali Biodiversity Park in Gurgaon. where a million native trees were planted by the group #IAmGurgaon. She was awarded the Nari Shakti Award in 2015 by the President of India.
Sailakshmi Balijepally or Sai Balijepally is an Indian Pediatrician and the Founder of Ekam Foundation, an NGO working in the areas of Child and Maternal Health & Well Being. She was awarded the Nari Shakti Award in 2015 by the President of India.
Sunita Devi is an Indian mason honoured for building toilets. In her village 90% of the women did not have access to a toilet. After her work they all now have access. She was given the Nari Shakti Puraskar award in 2019 by the President of India.

Kagganapalli Radha Devi is an Indian activist who successfully protested against a Hindu temple that would only employ male barbers. The Venkateswara Temple, Tirumala, which gathers over a ton of hair every day, agreed to also employ female barbers to carry out the ritual tonsuring. Devi received the Nari Shakti Puraskar in recognition of her work.
