The Dark Knight Returns is a 1986 four-issue comic book miniseries starring Batman, written by Frank Miller, illustrated by Miller and Klaus Janson, and published by DC Comics. When originally published, the series was simply titled Batman: The Dark Knight, with a different subtitle for each issue, but when the series was collected into a single volume later that year, the title of the first issue was applied to the entire series, and has remained so ever since. The Dark Knight Returns tells an alternative story of Bruce Wayne, who at 55 years old returns from retirement to fight crime and faces opposition from the Gotham City police force and the United States government. The story introduces Carrie Kelley as the new Robin and the hyper-violent street gang known as the Mutants. The story also features the return of classic foes such as Two-Face and The Joker, and culminates with a confrontation against Superman, who works on behalf of the government.

James W. Gordon is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics, most commonly in association with the superhero Batman. The character debuted in the first panel of Detective Comics #27, Batman's first appearance, where he is referred to simply as Commissioner Gordon. The character was created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane. Commissioner Gordon made his debut as an ally of Batman, making him the first Batman supporting character ever to be introduced.
Batman: Dark Victory is a 14-part American comic book limited series published by DC Comics, featuring the superhero Batman. Batman: Gotham Knight is a 2008 anthology film consisting of six short animated (anime-influenced) superhero films produced by Japanese animation studios Studio 4°C, Madhouse, Bee Train and Production I.G in association with DC Comics and Warner Bros. Animation. The shorts or segments in the film depict the DC Comics superhero Batman battling against the mob of Gotham City as well as other villains. Although intended to be set in between the films Batman Begins (2005) and The Dark Knight (2008), the producers have acknowledged that it is not necessarily meant to be canon to Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy and any of the six segments could easily fall into almost any Batman continuity. The shorts are written by Josh Olson, David S. Goyer, Brian Azzarello, Greg Rucka, Jordan Goldberg and Alan Burnett. Although all based on Japanese anime art style, each segment has its own writing and artistic style just as the works from the DC Universe and with the same style of The Animatrix although some segments are connected, giving it the nickname, "The Batimatrix". All six films of the feature star Kevin Conroy, reprising his voice role as Batman from the DC animated universe.
Batman: Earth One is a series of graphic novels published by DC Comics as part of the Earth One line. The series is written by Geoff Johns and illustrated by Gary Frank. Volume One of the series was released on July 4, 2012. Volume Two was announced for a 2013 release but postponed and, as a result, was released on May 6, 2015.

The origin of Batman depicts the events that cause a young Bruce Wayne to become Batman. The core event has remained fairly unchanged, but the aftermath and Bruce's journey to become Batman were not detailed until later years. The story first appeared in Detective Comics #33, and was retold in graphic novels such as Batman: Year One.
