In the Burton / Schumacher films, this iteration of the character is first portrayed by Michael Keaton in Batman (1989), Batman Returns (1992) and later would reprise the role in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) film, The Flash. Actor Val Kilmer would later replace Keaton in the role in Batman Forever (1995) and would also be replaced by George Clooney in Batman & Robin (1997). The series was later cancelled due to the lukewarm reception to Batman & Robin.
Actor, Kevin Conroy voiced the character in multiple theatrical and Direct-to-DVD films as multiple iterations of the character. The Burton and Schumacher series was a series of American superhero films with the first two installments directed by Tim Burton and the following two installments directed by Joel Schumacher. The two Burton-films left a legacy and influenced Hollywood's modern marketing and development techniques of the superhero film genre. [1] While Schumacher's Batman & Robin (1997) is regarded as one of the worst rated superhero films of all time. [2] Many Batman storylines serve as inspiration such as Batman: The Killing Joke , the tone of The Dark Knight Returns, The Man Behind the Red Hood! and Catwoman: Her Sister's Keeper . In 2023, it retroactively confirmed that the Burton-directed and Schumacher-directed films are set in two different continuities. [3]

The DC Universe (DCU) is an upcoming American media franchise and shared universe centered on a series of superhero films and television series based on characters that appear in American comic books published by DC Comics. It serves as the successor and soft reboot of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The story of the DCU is divided into chapters, starting with "Gods and Monsters" which will begin in 2024 with the animated series Creature Commandos . DC Studios co-Chairmen and co-CEOs, James Gunn and Peter Safran considered the chapter's first film, Superman (2025), to be the true beginning of the DCU.
The Joker franchise are a series of American thriller character study films directed by Todd Phillips focused on the origins and stories of the DC Comics supervillain, the Joker and later Harley Quinn. The series takes inspiration from gritty psychological films such as Taxi Driver (1976) and The King of Comedy (1982), both directed by Martin Scorsese as well as loosely adapting plot elements from the storylines Batman: The Killing Joke and The Batman Adventures: Mad Love , although the filmmakers otherwise did not look to specific comics for inspiration.

DC Comics's Superman franchise, based on the character of the same name created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster in June 1938, has seen the release of various films since its inception. The character debuted in cinemas in a series of animated shorts beginning in 1941, and then was the protagonist of two movie serials in 1948 and 1950. An independent studio, Lippert Pictures, released the first Superman feature film, Superman and the Mole Men, starring George Reeves, in 1951. In 1973, the film rights to the Superman character were purchased by Ilya Salkind, Alexander Salkind, and Pierre Spengler. After numerous scripts and several years in development, Richard Donner was hired as their director, and he shot two films, Superman (1978), and Superman II (1980), at the same time, both starring Christopher Reeve. Donner had already shot eighty percent of Superman II before it was decided to finish shooting the first film. The Salkinds fired Donner after Superman's release and commissioned Richard Lester as the director to finish Superman II. Lester returned to direct Superman III (1983). The Salkinds also produced the related spin-off Supergirl (1984). They then sold the rights to Cannon Films, which produced the poorly reviewed Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987). Ilya Salkind commissioned a fifth Superman script before Warner Bros. acquired the rights entirely in 1993.

The film was directed by Andy Muschietti from a screenplay by Christina Hodson and a story by Joby Harold and the writing team of John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein. It stars Ezra Miller as Barry Allen / The Flash alongside Sasha Calle in her film debut, Michael Shannon, Ron Livingston, Maribel Verdú, Kiersey Clemons, Antje Traue, and Michael Keaton. In the film, Barry travels back in time to prevent his mother's death, which unintentionally results in his being stranded in an alternate past.

Miller also reprised the role in cameo capacity in other DC Comics media such as the Arrowverse event series Crisis on Infinite Earths and in the HBO Max series Peacemaker. The DC Extended Universe marks the first time The Flash has been portrayed in live-action film.
