Benchema and Nkatieso are neighboring villages in the Juabeso district, a district in the southwest quadrant of Western Region of Ghana, about 86 miles east of the Ivorian border. [1]

Demographics

People

The Sefwis of Benchema and Nkatieso speak a dialect of the Akan language, and the village's collective literacy rate is nearly 90%. Benchema's area is 23 km2, and that of Nkatieso 31 km2, making a total of 54 km2.

Economy

Together, Benchema and Nkatieso form a community jointly sustained by local food production and outside trade.

Education

Each of the villages boasts of both public and private primary schools and middle schools, but the closest high school is located in another municipality five miles awayalong with the nearest police station.

Transport

Buses travelling on unpaved roads is the major form of transportation to major cities; Kumasi, the Ghana's second largest city, is a two-hour bus-ride from Benchema-Nkatieso. Kumasi is also home to the university nearest to Benchema-Nkatieso, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. Wiawso Teacher Training College in Sefwi-Wiawso is 22-miles from here. University of Mines and Technology (UDS) in Tarkwa, Western Region is about three hours drive from Benchema-Nkatieso.

Although Benchema and Nkatieso are connected to Ghana's power grid, the villages do not have a water supply network. Instead, boreholes provide safe drinking water for the residents. The Wiawso-Benchema Trunk Road is completed and also available. The tarring of the road from Wiawso to Benchema would make travelling along the Accra-Kumas-Bibiani-Wiawso-Benchema Highway very easy and time saving. Goods and services are transported to the towns and at a lower cost. The project is funded by the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) through the Government of Ghana (GoG).

It constitutes a twin conservation area called the Bia National Park and the Bia Resource Reserve.

The Sefwi are an Akan people.

Paul Evans Aidoo is a Ghanaian teacher and politician. He is the Member of Parliament for Sefwi-Wiawso and is the Minister for the Western Region of Ghana. Prior to heading the Western Region, he was the Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister. He has been condemned for "promoting hatred" by Ghana's Centre for Popular Education and Human Rights after the minister urged people to report suspected homosexuals. "All efforts are being made to get rid of these people in the society," he said.

Sefwi Wiawso is a town in the Sefwi-Wiawso Municipal District in the Western North Region of Ghana. It doubles as the capital of Sefwi-Wiawso Municipal District and Western North Region. Wiawso serves as the traditional seat for the Omanhene of Sefwi-Wiawso traditional area. The settlement of wiawso began on hilltop with Sefwi-Dwenase settlement occupying the lowlands. Overtime, Wiawso and Sefwi-Dwenase have conurbated with almost all the financial institutions, governmental agency-offices, lorry terminals and the main market all located in Sefwi Dwenase. Wiawso is known for producing timber, cocoa and cashew.

The Wiawso College of Education is a teacher education college in the Sefwi-Wiawso District, Western North Region, Ghana. The college participated in the DFID-funded T-TEL programme. It is affiliated to the University of Education, Winneba.

Paul Kwabena Boafo is a Ghanaian theologian and minister who was elected as the twelfth Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church Ghana in 2018. He previously served as the Administrative Bishop of the Church. He is the first ordained minister to serve in both capacities in the episcopal history of the Ghanaian Methodist Church. Boafo also served as the Protestant Chaplain of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

John Kweku Danso is a Ghanaian politician and a member of the first Parliament of the fourth Republic representing the Sefwi-Wiawso constituency in the Western Region of Ghana. He represented the National Democratic Congress.

Sefwi Debiso is a town in the Bia West District in the Western North Region of Ghana. It is a central town located between three major towns: Essam, Sefwi Adabokrom and Adwuofua. Because of rapid expansion, Debiso has conurbated with the nearby Community Essam. Presently, Sefwi Debiso & Essam serve as co-capitals of the Bia West District. There are direct distant routes from Debiso to major towns such as Kumasi, Berekum, Mim Ahafo, Sefwi-Wiawso and republic of Ivory Coast. Debiso is known for producing cocoa and timber. Debiso is also noted for the Bia National Park.

Adabokrom is a town in Western North Region of Ghana. It is the capital of Bia East. Adabokrom was named the District capital after Bia East District split from Bia District in 2012. Adabokrom is about 250 km west of Kumasi. The town is noted for cocoa production.

Sefwi Bodi is a town in the Western North Region of Ghana. The people in this community are mainly Sefwi people. In June 2012, Sefwi Bodi wa elevated as the capital of the then newly created Bodi (district). Bodi is 60 km west of Sefwi Wiawso the regional capital. Bodi is considered one of the breadbaskets of Ghana. Greater percentage of foodstuffs sent to major cities like Kumasi and Accra come from Sefwi Bodi. Sefwi Bodi is noted for the Bodi Senior High School which is the only second cycle institution in that area of the country.
