Bernd Loebe (born 15 December 1952) is a German music journalist and opera manager. After working as a journalist with a focus on opera and voice for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), Neue Musikzeitung , Opernwelt and Hessischer Rundfunk, he was artistic director of the opera house of Brussels, La Monnaie, from 1990, and has been Intendant of the Oper Frankfurt since 2002, where he encouraged a capable ensemble, international guest artists, and the production of rarely performed operas. He received the 2018 International Opera Award in the category Leadership in Opera.
Born in Frankfurt am Main, Loebe began to visit the theatre at age 14, and was impressed at age 16 by a performance of Mozart's Die Zauberflöte conducted by Christoph von Dohnanyi. [1] [2] He studied law at the University of Frankfurt, and privately studied the piano. [1] He worked in the music department of the FAZ from 1975 to 1980, also for the Neue Musikzeitung and the journal Opernwelt . He worked freelance for the broadcaster Hessischer Rundfunk, moderating the morning journal Vor dem Alltag and responsible for the biographical Lexikon der Stimmen, [1] presenting in alphabetical order world-famous and forgotten opera singers in interviews and recordings. In 1979, Loebe moved to Hessischer Rundfunk, responsible for opera and especially its international festivals such as the Bayreuth Festival and Salzburg Festival. [3]
In November 1990, the opera La Monnaie in Brussels appointed Loebe as artistic director. He worked as a consultant for the Oper Frankfurt from 2000, where he became Intendant with the 2002/03 season. His contract was renewed several times and now runs to 2023. When he took up the post, he faced a reduced municipal budget. [2] In his first season, he produced Schubert's Fierrabras staged by Tilman Knabe, a good choice to international interest reviewers. [2] Other works that season included operas between Joseph Haydn and Salvatore Sciarrino: Wagner's Der fliegende Holländer staged by Christof Nel, Schreker's Der Schatzgräber , Britten's The Turn of the Screw and Die Frau ohne Schatten by Richard Strauss. He has consistently supported an ensemble, performing eight to nine new productions per season, sometimes conducted in collaboration with other opera houses. [2] After his first season, the Oper Frankfurt received the Opernhaus des Jahres award by the critics of Opernwelt, the second time since 1995. The opera house was awarded the title again for the 2018/19 season. [4] For the 2014/15 season, it received the award by the journal Deutsche Bühne for the best program. [3]
Loebe has supported the formation of a capable ensemble working with international guest artists, and the production of operas beyond the standard repertoire. [3] In an interview, he said that he alone decides the playbill for a season, based on his interest and curiosity. [4] Passionate about voices, he has selected members for the ensemble with long-range plans, [5] and a focus on team spirit. [6] He is present in eight of ten performances at the Oper Frankfurt, and led the opera house to international recognition. [7]
In 2014, the opera house produced the world premiere of Rolf Riehm's Sirenen , based on the Greek myth of Odysseus, Circe and the Sirens. In the 2018/19 season, Loebe produced Franz Schreker's Der Ferne Klang which had received its world premiere in Frankfurt, conducted by Sebastian Weigle, with Jennifer Holloway and Ian Koziara in the leading roles. The production was dedicated to Michael Gielen who had initiated the Schreker revival in Frankfurt with Die Gezeichneten in 1979. [8] In the 2019/20 season, Loebe programmed Rossini's Otello, for the first time in Frankfurt, staged by Damiano Michieletto with Enea Scala in the title role. [9] Loebe matched the voices of Asmik Grigorian, named singer of the year by Opernwelt, and Joshua Guerrero, who debuted in Germany as Puccini's Manon Lescaut and Chevalier des Grieux, staged by Àlex Ollé. [5] Schostakovitch's Lady Macbeth von Mzensk was given with Anja Kampe and Dmitry Belosselskiy. [9] Loebe chose to present Fauré's only opera Pénélope in its second production in Germany, staged by Corinna Tetzel, conducted by Joana Mallwitz, named conductor of the year by Opernwelt, and Paula Murrihy and Eric Laporte in the leading roles. Since March 2009, Loebe has also been vice president of the Deutsche Akademie der Darstellenden Künste. In June 2010, he was elected president of the Deutsche Opernkonferenz of 13 opera houses in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. In 2019, he was elected again for a fourth term. [11] In October 2018, Loebe was named the successor of Gustav Kuhn as Intendant of the Tiroler Festspiele Erl , beginning on 1 September 2019. [12] In May 2023, it was announced that Loebe would be leaving the festival at the end of the 2024 summer season. [13]
The Frankfurt Radio Symphony is the radio orchestra of Hessischer Rundfunk, the public broadcasting network of the German state of Hesse. From 1929 to 1950 it was named Frankfurter Rundfunk-Symphonie-Orchester. From 1950 to 1971 the orchestra was named Sinfonie-Orchester des Hessischen Rundfunks, from then to 2005 Radio-Sinfonie-Orchester Frankfurt. Prior to 2015, the English translation Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra was used for international tours.

Emil Mangelsdorff was a German jazz musician who played alto saxophone, soprano saxophone, clarinet and flute. He was a jazz pioneer under the Nazi regime which led to his imprisonment. After World War II and years as a prisoner of war, he was a founding member of the jazz ensemble of Hessischer Rundfunk in 1958. He played with several groups and was active, also as an educator, until old age.
Opernwelt is a monthly German magazine for opera, operetta and ballet. It includes news about current performances, portraits of composers and performers, articles about opera houses, performance spaces, and contemporary and historical subjects from the world of opera and classical music. It reviews recordings and books and publishes monthly schedules of German and international opera houses. The magazine's website offers full text search for past issues. A year book is published every October.
Matthias Rexroth is a German countertenor and voice teacher. Winning 1st prizes at the Francisco-Viñas in Barcelona and the 'Belvedere Competition' in Vienna in 2000, preceded an extensive international performing and teaching career.
Kurt Horres was a German stage director, particularly of opera, and opera manager. He held positions as general manager at the Staatstheater Darmstadt, the Hamburg State Opera, and from 1986 to 1996 at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein. He focused on opera of the 20th century, including composers who had been banned during the Nazi regime, such as Korngold's Die tote Stadt, and literature operas including Gottfried von Einem's Kabale und Liebe, and the world premieres of Blacher's Yvonne, Prinzessin von Burgund, and Klebe's Das Mädchen aus Domrémy. He taught stage direction at the Folkwang University.
Tanja Ariane Baumgartner is a German operatic mezzo-soprano. A member of the Oper Frankfurt since 2009, she has enjoyed an international career, appearing in major European and American opera houses and the Salzburg Festival.
Johannes Martin Kränzle is a German baritone in opera and concert who has made an international career. For years a member of the Oper Frankfurt, he was chosen as Singer of the Year in 2011 after creating the leading role in Wolfgang Rihm's Dionysos at the Salzburg Festival. He made his debut at the Royal Opera House as Don Alfonso in Mozart's Così fan tutte, and at the Bayreuth Festival as Beckmesser in Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg in 2017.
Tobias Kratzer is a German stage director, especially of opera, who has worked internationally after winning a competition in Graz with two entries in 2008. He has staged works by Verdi and Wagner, but also contemporary music. He directed Wagner's Tannhäuser for the 2019 Bayreuth Festival.
Katharina Magiera is a German operatic contralto. A member of the Oper Frankfurt, she has appeared in major European opera houses. She is active also as a lieder singer and has recorded.
Jennifer Holloway is an American operatic mezzo-soprano and soprano who has made an international career performing at leading opera houses and festivals. She began as a mezzo-soprano singing roles such as Adalgisa in Bellini's Norma, and moved to soprano roles such as Salome and Grete Graumann in Schreker's Der ferne Klang.
Ian Koziara is an American operatic tenor who made an international career at major opera houses, such as the Oper Frankfurt and the Metropolitan Opera.
Figuralchor Frankfurt is a mixed choir in Frankfurt, Hesse, Germany. It was founded in 1966 as a youth choir for the broadcaster Hessischer Rundfunk by Alois Ickstadt, who conducted it for 45 years. From 1977 to the 1990s, the choir was known as Figuralchor des Hessischen Rundfunks. It performs in concerts, radio productions and recordings, with a focus on a cappella music, but has also participated in joint symphonic productions such as Mahler's Symphony of a Thousand for the opening of the Alte Oper concert hall in 1981. The choir has been conducted by Paul Leonard Schäffer since 2016.
Katrin Lea Tag is a German scenic and costume designer for drama and opera, whose works have appeared internationally. In 2020, she was named Scenic Designer of the Year by Opernwelt, for productions such as Barrie Kosky's Salome for the Oper Frankfurt.
Anja Petersen is a German operatic soprano and university lecturer. She works as a soloist in opera and concert, and as a member of the RIAS Kammerchor. She has appeared in world premieres in both opera and concert, including the leading female role in Arnulf Herrmann's Der Mieter at the Oper Frankfurt in 2017.
Heather Phillips is an American operatic coloratura soprano. She began her career at the Santa Fe Opera where she created there the role of Katie in Jennifer Higdon's Cold Mountain in 2015. She made her European debut at the Oper Frankfurt in 2022 in the title role of Rossini's Bianca e Falliero.
Anthony Robin Schneider is an operatic bass from Austria and New Zealand, based in Germany at the Oper Frankfurt. He has appeared in leading roles internationally, such as Truffaldino in Ariadne auf Naxos at the Santa Fe Opera, Sarastro in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte at the Houston Grand Opera, and Fafner in Wagner's Das Rheingold at the Tiroler Festspiele in Erl.
Iain MacNeal is a Canadian baritone in opera and concert who has performed leading roles at major opera houses in North America and Europe. He is based at the Oper Frankfurt, where he appeared in the title role in a new production of Dallapiccola's Ulisse in 2022.
