Bert and Ernie's Great Adventures (originally promoted as The Adventures of Bert and Ernie) is a claymation animated children's television series and segment in which clay animated versions of Bert and Ernie use their imaginations to travel to strange places and into entertaining situations. The series is produced by Sesame Workshop, in co-production with Misseri Studio, Norddeutscher Rundfunk and Channel 5 Broadcasting Limited.

Contents

The shorts are shown in the United States as inserts on Sesame Street (first appearing in season 39). Internationally, the shorts are shown as a stand-alone series in various overseas markets (the first season debuting in September 2008). Two seasons of 26 five-minute episodes each had been produced. The "Secret Agents" episode has received the Gold Award for the Children's Animation category at the 2009 World Media Festival, as well as being a selection at the 2009 Annecy Animation Festival.

Format

Each episode begins with Bert and Ernie climbing into their beds for a good night's sleep. Suddenly, Bert's bed starts shaking and tapping, and Ernie hops aboard as the bed flies out of their apartment and into their next great adventure. Each adventure has Bert and Ernie in a new location and a new situation. Sometimes they're accompanied by Bert's trusted pigeon-friend Bernice, or Ernie's toy Rubber Duckie. Often they encounter new and old friends, and also adversaries, along the way.

A few months after the 1969 premiere of the children's television program Sesame Street in the U.S., talks began in the United Kingdom to broadcast the programme or develop a co-production on British television. The idea was controversial at the time; the BBC was opposed to it, and ITV was reluctant. Response from parents, educators, and television officials to the show was varied, ranging from distaste to acceptance. After much public debate, the BBC chose not to air Sesame Street for several reasons, including the show's educational methods, its creation for American audiences, and the UK's long history of quality educational television programmes for young children. ITV, after much research, including a report entitled Reactions to Sesame Street in Britain, 1971, chose to air Sesame Street on a limited basis. It then switched to Channel 4 in the 1980s and aired there until 2001, when it was pulled from its regular schedule, replaced by The Hoobs.
