An old variant name of the community was called South Bethany. [1] A post office was established under this name in 1861, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1903. [2]

The city is known for its architectural significance, having commissioned numerous noted works of modern architecture and public art since the mid-20th century; the annual program Exhibit Columbus celebrates this legacy. Located about 40 mi (64 km) south of Indianapolis, on the east fork of the White River, it is the state's 20th-largest city.
