Sir William Arnot Wakeham FREng [1] (born 25 September 1944 [2] ) is a British chemical engineer. From 2001 to 2009 he was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Southampton.

Education

Wakeham received his undergraduate and graduate degrees in physics at Exeter University. [3]

Career

He served as a Research Associate at Brown University, in Providence, Rhode Island. In 1971 he was appointed lecturer in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemical Technology at Imperial College, London. He was successively Reader in 1979, Professor of Chemical Physics in 1985, and head of the Department of Chemical Engineering in 1988.

His academic specialty is thermodynamics, particularly the thermophysical properties of fluids and intermolecular forces.

In 1996 he was appointed Pro-Rector (Research) and subsequently also Deputy Rector and Pro-Rector (Resources) at Imperial College, holding these positions simultaneously. [4] He oversaw the college's medical school formation in 1997 from the merger of St Mary's Hospital Medical School, Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School (formerly Charing Cross Hospital Medical School and Westminster Hospital Medical School), the Royal Postgraduate Medical School and the National Heart and Lung Institute.

In 2007 the then Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills, Rt. Hon. John Denham MP invited him to chair a review of UK physics [5] which reported in October 2008.

He is a Visiting Professor at Imperial College. He is a member of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and chairs their Resource Audit Committee. He is a member of the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) Board. He is a member of the European Union expert panel on philanthropy and universities. He is UK Chair of the British-Italian Partnership Programme. [6]

Honours

He was knighted in the 2009 Birthday Honours. [7] He was President of the Institution of Chemical Engineers 20112. [8] He is a Chartered Engineer, Chartered Physicist and Fellow [1] of the Royal Academy of Engineering, [1] the Institution of Chemical Engineers, the Institution of Electrical Engineers, the Institute of Physics and Imperial College London. [3] [9] He is a Touloukian Medal holder from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (1997) and holds honorary degrees from Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Exeter University, [10] Loughborough University [11]

Personal life

He married Christina Marjorie Stone in 1969 and they had one son. They divorced in 1974. He married second Sylvia Frances Tolley in 1978 and they had two sons. [12]

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) is a British Research Council that provides government funding for grants to undertake research and postgraduate degrees in engineering and the physical sciences, mainly to universities in the United Kingdom. He is especially well known for his work on the thermodynamics of rubber elasticity. He inspired a generation of physical chemists as a result of his research interests, and he had a passion for fostering links between academia and industry.

Dame Frances Anne Cairncross, is a British economist, journalist and academic. She is a senior fellow at the School of Public Policy, UCLA. She formerly chaired the executive committee of the Institute for Fiscal Studies. From 2004 to 2014, she was the Rector of Exeter College, Oxford. From 2015, Cairncross has been chair of the Court of Heriot-Watt University.

Peter Knight (physicist) British physicist

Sir Peter Leonard Knight is a British physicist, professor of quantum optics and senior research investigator at Imperial College London, and principal of the Kavli Royal Society International Centre. He is a leading academic in the field of quantum optics and is the recipient of several major awards including the Royal Medal from the Royal Society and the Thomas Young Medal and Prize from the Institute of Physics. He is a former president of the Institute of Physics and the Optical Society of America, the first non North American-based person to take the position.

Sir Gordon Robert Higginson was an English engineer and academic who was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Southampton from 1985 to 1994. He was co-author of the standard text on hydrodynamic lubrication and the Higginson Report on A levels.

Leszek Borysiewicz

Sir Leszek Krzysztof Borysiewicz is a British professor, immunologist and scientific administrator of Polish-Welsh heritage. He served as the 345th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge, his term of office started on 1 October 2010 and ended on 1 October 2017. Borysiewicz also served as chief executive of the Medical Research Council of the UK from 2007-2010.

Elfyn Richards

Nicholas Robert Jennings is a British computer scientist and the current Vice-Chancellor and President of Loughborough University. John Loughhead

Prof John Neil Loughhead CB OBE FREng FIMechE FIET is a British businessman and Chief Scientific Adviser to Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). He is also a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, Chair of the Energy research partnership and was formerly the Executive Director of the UK Energy Research Centre. He was appointed an OBE for services to Technology in 2011. In 2014, he was voted as one of the Top 500 Most Influential People in Britain by Debrett's and The Sunday Times.
