Bimal Hasmukh Patel (born 31 August 1961) is an architect from Ahmedabad, India, with over 35 years of professional, research and teaching experience in architecture, urban design and urban planning. [1] He was the President of CEPT University in Ahmedabad [2] from July 2012 to January 2024. He leads HCP Design Planning and Management Private Limited, an architecture, planning and project management firm. [3] [4] [5] He also founded Environmental Planning Collaborative, a not-for-profit, planning research and advocacy organization. [6]

Patel’s practice has focused on transforming urban design and planning practices to make them more effective in improving Indian cities. His research interests are in Land Use Planning, Real Estate Markets, Building Regulations, Land Management and Urban Planning History. [7] [8] [9] He received the Padma Shri Award for his contributions in the fields of Architecture and Planning in 2019. [10] [11]

Early life and education

Bimal Patel lives and practices architecture and city planning in Ahmedabad, India. He was educated at the St. Xavier's High School, Loyola Hall, Ahmedabad. Later he studied at School of Architecture, Center for Environmental Planning and Technology, CEPT, from 1978 to 1984. In 1981, he apprenticed with Frei Otto at the Institute for Lightweight Structures, Stuttgart, Germany. [12]

After receiving his first professional degree in architecture from CEPT in 1984 and a year of work in Ahmedabad, Patel moved to Berkeley to study at the College of Environmental Design, CED. He graduated with M.Arch. and M.C.P. degrees in 1988 and a Ph.D. from the Department of City and Regional Planning in 1995. He worked closely with Prof. Allan Jacobs, Prof. Donlyn Lyndon, Prof. Manuel Castells and Prof. Mike Teitz at the CED and Prof. Richard Walker of the Geography Department. [12] UC Berkeley and the openness of CED provided him with the opportunity and freedom for intellectual exploration beyond the confines of Architecture and City Planning. [13] [12]

Career

In 1990, Patel joined his father's practice in Ahmedabad. [14] One of his first building design projects, a campus for The Entrepreneurship Development Institute, Ahmedabad, won the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1992. [15] Over the years he has built up a significant body of work ranging from single-family homes, to institutions, industrial buildings and urban redevelopment projects. [16] [17] Urban design projects, like the Kankaria Lake Development and the Sabarmati Riverfront, are the first of their kind in the country. [18]

His significant and award-winning projects include the Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad, Ahmedabad Management Association, Bhuj Development Plan and Town Planning Schemes (post-earthquake), C G Road Redevelopment, Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India, Gujarat High Court,  Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad New Campus, [19] [20] Kankaria Lake, Sabarmati Riverfront and the Swarnim Sankul at Gandhinagar.

His work and his projects have been conferred with numerous awards including the Aga Khan Award for Architecture (1992), [15] [21] United Nations Centre for Human Settlements' Award of Excellence (1998), World Architecture Award (2001) and the Prime Minister’s National Award for Excellence in Urban Planning and Design (2006). He was bestowed with the Padma Shri Award in 2019. [10] [11]

Patel has been the President of CEPT University in Ahmedabad from July 2012 to January 2024. CEPT University focuses on understanding, designing, planning, constructing, and managing human habitats. [22] [23] His work there involved academics as well as institutional leadership and development. [1]

The Sabarmati river is one of the major west-flowing rivers in India. According to the 2011 national census, the population of Ahmedabad was declared to be 7,214,225. This figure was only limited to the municipality region. The total population of the Ahmedabad Urban Agglomeration came to 7.2 million people. There were 886 females to every 1000 males in 2001. Now there are 904 women to 1000 men in 2011. Ahmedabad had a literacy rate of 79.89% in 2001 which rose to 89.62 percent in 2011. Out of this, male and female literacy are 93.96 and 84.81 percent as of 2011 census. According to the census for the ninth plan, there are 30737 rural families living in Ahmedabad. Out of those, 5.41% live below the poverty line. There are 439,843 people who live in slums in the city. The majority of residents of Ahmedabad are native Gujaratis and speak Gujarati. There is also a sizable population of Punjabis, Marathis, Tamils, Sindhis, Malayalis and Marwaris who bring in their native language and culture to the city. The government institutions and military base near the city also bring peoples from across India. The city's population has increased in a major way following increasing economic expansion and modernization.

The network expanded to 89 kilometres (55 mi) by December 2017 and 160 km by March 2023; with daily ridership of 3,49,000 passengers. BRTS won several nation and international awards for design, implementation and operation. It was rated Silver on BRT Standard in 2013.

Central Vista Redevelopment Project refers to the ongoing redevelopment to revamp the Central Vista, India's central administrative area located near Raisina Hill, New Delhi. The area was originally designed by Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker during British colonial rule and was retained by the Government of India after independence.
