Bing is a multi-award-winning CGI-animated children's television series based on the books by Ted Dewan and produced by Acamar Films.The series follows a preschool bunny boy named Bing as he experiences everyday issues.

Contents

Bing airs on CBeebies in the United Kingdom and Ireland and S4C in Wales. In January 2024, Acamar Films announced that Bing had been requested over one billion times on BBC iPlayer. [1] RAI in Italy premiered the series in 2018 on its RAI YoYo platform. [2] In The United States, the series started airing on the Cartoonito block in September 2021 on Cartoon Network, [3] [4] with an American voice cast, replacing their original British voices. [5] Bing premiered in France on the France 5 channel in January 2023. [6] Bing airs in 130 countries [7] and is available on YouTube across a network of 25 localized channels. [8] [9]

Bing has won numerous awards including an International Emmy® Kids Award and A Writers' Guild Award. [10] The Peek-a-Boo Bing soft toy has won a 2023 Made For Mums Gold Award. [11]

Plot

Every episode starts off with Flop saying "Round the corner not far away". Whatever Bing is doing at the start of the episode. At the end, Bing summarizes what he has learnt in the episode, with Flop intoning "It's a Bing thing". [12]

Characters

Production

Bing was based on the Bing Bunny book series, written and illustrated by Ted Dewan. [17] [18] Acamar Films acquired the rights to Bing Bunny [19] and produced the programme in conjunction with Brown Bag Films and Tandem Films. [14] [17] Acamar Films CEO, Mikael Shields selected Bing for development because he believed that the stories within Bing had potential to support young-children and help them to develop life-long resilience. [20] The series was developed for CBeebies though initial episodes were viewable at MIPTV. [21]

Acamar Films CEO, Mikael Shields was voice director for the series [22] [23] and served as a writer on the programme. [24]

23 external writers, 5 internal writers, 3 Montessori teachers, American educators, and English language development experts were involved in the production of each series. [25]

Home media

DVDs of the series are released by StudioCanal in the UK. [34] [35] The first DVD "Swing... and other episodes" was released on 31 March 2015 and features 10 episodes - Bye Bye, Swing, Blocks, Ducks, Smoothie, Frog, Car Park, Shadow, Musical Statues, and Voo Voo. A second DVD was released on 15 June of the same year and is titled "Storytime... and other episodes", featuring a further 10 episodes - Storytime, Growing, Atchoo, Hide & Seek, Bake, Train, Say Goodbye, Lost, Picnic, and Balloon.

Apps

The Bing app, "Bing: Watch, Play, Learn" was first released in September 2019. Available on iOS, Android and Amazon platforms, the app features full episodes as well as games, audio and activities. Certain features may be restricted due to location and existing distribution rights. The app has been downloaded 2.8 million times since launch. [36]

Publishing

HarperCollins Children's Books signed a deal with Acamar and The Licensing Company to re-publish the stories to link with the TV programme. [37] [38] [39] The books were re-issued in 2013–14. [21] Approximately 5.2 million Bing books have been sold worldwide with over 70 Bing books published in the UK. [40] HarperCollins and Acamar Films renewed their publishing agreement in 2023. [41]

Toys

Fisher Price initially developed a range of Bing toys, which were released in July 2015, including "play sets, figurines, role play items, ride-ons, musical toys, wooden toys, and soft toys". [42] At some point Fisher Price lost the license and now toys are currently manufactured by Golden Bear Toys who produce a variety of Bing toys including soft toys as well as plastic play sets. [43]

Live events

Costume characters of Bing and Flop have been present in CBeebies Land at the Alton Towers theme park since 2018. [44] Specially-decorated Bing rooms were launched in the CBeebies Hotel at Alton Towers in 2022. [45] Bing and Flop costume characters also appear regularly at the Gulliver's Land theme park in Milton Keynes [46] and Rotherham [47] and take part in various limited-time appearances at venues across the UK including Chester Zoo, [48] London Zoo, [49] and Woburn Safari Park. [50] Bing has also appeared at the UK's Gloworm [51] and CarFest [52] summer festivals. In Italy, Bing and Flop form part of the entertainment at the Leolandia theme park since 2019. [53]

An English-language theatre show, 'Bing Live' toured across 50 locations in the UK in 2018. [54] In the Netherlands, a Dutch-language touring theatre show, 'Bing is jarig' ('Bing's Birthday') premiered in October 2021 with many performances selling out. [55] A Polish-language version of the show began touring Poland in November 2023. [56]

In November 2022, a limited-time Bing store was opened in the Glasgow Fort shopping centre. The Bing Store Pop-Up sold a range of Bing products while also offering free storytelling sessions, craft activities and meet and greets with the Bing and Flop costume characters. [57]

Cinema

Acamar Films has produced four Bing cinema packages. The first, 'Bing at the Cinema' debuted across 83 cinemas in the United Kingdom in 2019. [58] In 2023, 'Bing's Christmas and Other Stories' was distributed across 118 UK cinemas. [59] Bing cinema packages have premiered in local languages in UK, the Netherlands, Poland and Italy. [58]

Bob the Builder is a British animated children's television series created by Keith Chapman for HIT Entertainment and Hot Animation. The series follows the adventures of Bob, a general contractor, specialising in masonry, along with his colleague Wendy, various neighbours, and friends, and equipment, and their gang of anthropomorphised work-vehicles, Scoop, Muck, Dizzy, Roley, Lofty and many others. LazyTown is an English-language Icelandic, British, and American children's television series created by aerobics champion Magnús Scheving. The show was designed to encourage healthy lifestyles. The series was based on Scheving's stage plays Áfram Latibær!.

<i>In the Night Garden...</i> British childrens television series

In the Night Garden... is a popular British preschool children's television series created, written and composed by Teletubbies co-creator Andrew Davenport for CBeebies and BBC Two and produced by Ragdoll Worldwide, a joint venture of Ragdoll Productions and BBC Worldwide. The show was aimed at children aged from one to six years old. The programme is narrated by Derek Jacobi. It is filmed in live action and features a mix of actors in costume, stop motion, puppetry and CGI animation. The characters include Igglepiggle, Upsy Daisy, Makka Pakka, the Tombliboos, the Pontipines, the Wottingers, the HaaHoos, the Ninky Nonk, the Pinky Ponk, the Ball and the Tittifers.

Ted Dewan is an American-born British writer and illustrator of children's books who resides in England. He is best known as the creator of the award-winning book series, Bing, now adapted into an animated television series.

<i>Chuggington</i> British childrens television series

Chuggington is a British animated television series aimed at pre-school children, produced by Ludorum plc and Herschend Entertainment Studios. It is broadcast on the BBC's CBeebies channel and other channels internationally. Originally composed of five series running from 2008 to 2015, the series left its five-six year hiatus when a new batch of episodes was released on Playhouse Disney and Disney Junior in the United States on 29 June 2020, and on CBeebies in the United Kingdom on 2 January 2021.

<i>3rd & Bird</i> Childrens television series

3rd & Bird is a children's animated television series created by Josh Selig and directed by Jennifer Oxley. The series was animated by Little Airplane Productions, which opened a second studio in London to produce it. The show revolves around a community of birds and their adventures. It was broadcast on the BBC's CBeebies channel from 1 July 2008 to 31 July 2010. Described in its initial press release as "a charming new animated series all about community", the show's format generally involves one or more of the characters encountering a problem which must be solved using the social skills which pre-school children must develop in order to make their way in the world.

<i>Zigby</i> Australian TV series or program

Zigby the zebra is an anthropomorphic children's fictional character created by Scottish-born English author Brian Paterson. Zigby appears in a series of picture books and board books as well as in a 3D-animated television adaptation. It aired on Treehouse TV from 2009 to 2011 in Canada and it was previously aired on CBeebies in the UK from 2009 to 2014.

<i>Charlie and Lola</i> (TV series) British childrens television series

Charlie and Lola is a British Flash-animated children's television series based on the popular children's picture book series of the same name by Lauren Child, produced by Tiger Aspect Productions for CBeebies. It ran for 3 series from 7 November 2005 to 24 April 2008, winning multiple BAFTA Children's Awards throughout its run. The animation uses a collage style that emulates the style of the original books.

Peter Rabbit is an animated comedy children's television series for preschool children that debuted on the Nick Jr. Channel on 14 December 2012, in the United States and on CBeebies and BBC One on 25 December 2012, in the United Kingdom. It is based on the character of the same name from Beatrix Potter's children’s books. The series debuted on American TV and iTunes on 14 December 2012, with the pilot episode debuting as a Christmas holiday special, titled Peter Rabbit's Christmas Tale, and the show was becoming a regular series on 19 February 2013, in the USA which was watched by three million viewers in the U.S. The first official DVD of Peter Rabbit was released on 28 May 2013, as a Walmart exclusive. It contains the programmes first eight episodes on a single disc. On 11 October 2013, Nickelodeon ordered a second series of 26 episodes. The series is also on the BBC Alba channel known as Peadar Kinnen. In Wales the series is known as Guto Gwningen dubbed into Welsh on S4C.

<i>Kate & Mim-Mim</i> Childrens television series

Kate & Mim-Mim is an animated children's television series created by husband-and-wife duo, Scott and Julie Stewart. Produced by Nerd Corps Entertainment in season 1 and later by DHX Media in season 2 with FremantleMedia Kids & Family, the first episode premiered on Disney Junior in the United States on December 19, 2014 until July 2, 2017 when Disney Junior lost the rights to air the series. The series also premiered in the United Kingdom on CBeebies on October 30, 2016.

<i>Numberblocks</i> Television series

Numberblocks is a British animated television series for preschoolers that debuted on CBeebies on 23 January 2017. The programme was created by Joe Elliot and produced by Alphablocks Ltd with Blue Zoo. It was commissioned by the British Broadcasting Corporation, with Larkshead Media and Learning Resources holding merchandising rights.

<i>Oddbods</i> Singaporean television series

Oddbods is a Singaporean computer-animated comedy television series produced by One Animation. The series premiered on July 25, 2022 on Cartoon Network on their Cartoonito preschool block and was released on July 26 on HBO Max. It is the second pre-school program in the Looney Tunes cartoon franchise, following Baby Looney Tunes in 2002.
