Bombay Velvet is the soundtrack composed by Amit Trivedi to the 2015 film of the same name directed by Anurag Kashyap starring Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma. The album featured 10 original songs with lyrics written by Amitabh Bhattacharya and performed by Neeti Mohan, Shefali Alvares, Shalmali Kholgade, Papon, Mohit Chauhan and Trivedi. It also accompanied three instrumentals used in the film score. The album also featured two alternative versions of an original song, compiling over 15 tracks in the album.
Most of the compositions were heavily influenced in jazz music, as Trivedi wanted to introduce the genre to the contemporary Indian audiences who were unfamiliar with the genre. To achieve this, he researched on jazz music over a year and took two more years to sketch the basic compositions. Later, he recorded the songs and the score during 2014 and 2015 in India and Czech Republic, taking nearly four years for the film's music. The soundtrack was released by the record label Zee Music Company on 24 April 2015.
Although the film was a critical and commercial disappointment, the soundtrack was critically acclaimed often regarded as one of the best Hindi film albums of that year and decade, as well as one of Trivedi's best works in his career.
Bombay Velvet is Trivedi's second collaboration with Kashyap after his critically acclaimed work for Dev.D (2009). [1] Trivedi agreed to score music for the film after he liked the script which had scope for jazz music. [2] As contemporary Indian audience were not well versed with jazz music, Trivedi felt that the soundtrack was an experiment for them. [3] At a Reddit AMA session, Kashyap said that the film's music would reflect the jazz era of 1960s Hindi film music, taking excerpts from how C. Ramchandra and Shankar–Jaikishan integrated jazz in their music during that time. [4] While most of the melodies are indigenous to suit the contemporary audience's taste, the basic essence was authentic jazz which he felt it as a combination of two worlds—"the big band jazz with its Afro-American origins combined with the Hindi film music". Amitabh Bhattacharya recalled that Kashyap insisted him to write the songs in a language that can be instantly identified with, demanding the 1960s songwriting techniques by Sahir Ludhianvi, Shailendra and Anand Bakshi. Trivedi described Bombay Velvet as a "good old fashioned Hindi album" where the songs need its own time and have been seamlessly woven into the storytelling, and not all the songs would be an instant success. The song "Behroopia" was edited from the film, as according to Trivedi, the people who were closely associated in the film and the marketing department found the soundtrack to be influenced with too much jazz and producers suggested him to make a romantic song that could be relevant with the current audience. Hence, he composed the song "Behroopia" as a "modern romantic number". [6]
Trivedi spent a year over researching jazz and its influences in the film and started sketching basic compositions in mid-2012 and 2013 implementing the nuances of jazz in the score and listened to standard and classic jazz music to imbibe that feel. [7] When Trivedi was touring in United States, Kashyap asked him to go to New Orleans which was the hub for jazz music having a variety of jazz genres. However, both of them went against it as recording in that state would have been expensive. [8] Instead, he recorded the music in Prague with a big band orchestra of around 100 musicians performing the score and collaborated with session musicians who worked with several Hollywood musicians. The recording was also happened in Mumbai and Chennai with jazz drummer Gino Banks performed more than five songs in the background. [6]
For the vocals, Trivedi had several singers for the female protagonist before finalising the cast. When Sharma came onboard, he instantly associated with Neeti Mohan as the background singer, because she earlier sang "Jiya Re" composed by A. R. Rahman for Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012) which also starred Sharma. Trivedi felt Neeti had a "vibrant voice" that would seamlessly suit Sharma's screen presence. However, he described the recording process was quite tough as they went through numerous workshops and music sessions so that she could "live with the songs". [6]
Besides Trivedi, Mikey McCleary also contributed to the music. He was suggested by the film's producers, to produce a "catchy, commercial, upbeat version" of the song "Mohabbat Buri Bimari", originally composed by Trivedi. His version was sung by Shalmali Kholgade. He recreated the track "Jaata Kahaan Hai Deewane" from C.I.D. (1956) which was originally composed by O. P. Nayyar and written by Majrooh Sultanpuri as "Fifi" as the original track was removed from the film by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). [9] Kashyap described the use for the song, as "one for the time period, second it fits in perfectly with the opium den atmosphere and the bars visited by Naval officers at the time and RK’s character comes there after the fight to drown his pain in the haze of opium". [10] McCleary said that they demanded an "upbeat" and "dancey" promotional song within the film, as the original song was pretty slow, he curated a "jazzy, swingy, fast" version which was sung by Suman Sridhar. During post-production, sound designer Kunal Sharma and engineers Sreejesh G. Nair and Justin Jose K. recorded the musical score and soundtrack in 96 kHz Dolby Atmos over the usual 48 kHz to provide more clarity, depth and feel to the film and its music. [13]

Devesh Sharma writing for Filmfare stated that, "The album won’t appeal to you on first listening. Give it time to grow on you and then you’ll appreciate what Amit Trivedi and his singers and musicians have achieved [...] One can only say that let the music play – and you sure will be rewarded with a rich listening experience." [14] Calling it as a "complete vintage treat", Surabhi Redkar of Koimoi rated the album three stars and said, "The Bombay Velvet album is true to its theme [...] Amit Trivedi does a damn good job at re-creating the 50s era and the Jazz is truly a masterpiece." [15] Kasmin Fernandes of The Times of India gave three-and-a-half out of five saying "Composed like a noir Hollywood musical, the soundtrack is a brave one for these commercially-entrenched times." [16]
Vipin Nair of Music Aloud gave 9 out of 10 stating Trivedi delivers "yet another massive, esoteric soundtrack, this time (mostly) within the confines of jazz music". [17] Karthik Srinivasan of Milliblog wrote "Bombay Velvet eschews Bollywood-style for a more international jazz flavor and comes out as Amit Trivedi’s phenomenal labor of love". [18] Joginder Tuteja of Bollywood Hungama rated the album 2.5 stars stating "The music of Bombay Velvet is pretty much on the expected lines, which means it doesn't really follow Bollywood norms and instead treads a path of its own. While this doesn't necessarily mean that there is a plethora of chartbusters in the offering, the songs seem good enough to fit into the storytelling of the film." [19] Prateek Sur of Bollywood Life gave two stars, calling the music as a "mixed bag" and said that "the music seems more jazzy than giving you that nostalgic feel". [20]
Bombay Velvet's soundtrack did not fare well commercially; it was prominently due to the unconventional nature of which Trivedi had composed keeping in mind with the film's narrative as well as the film being a box-office disappointment, which left the music went unrecognized by a large section of audiences. [21] [22] Trivedi eventually felt "heartbroken" as the music did not get its deserved due credit, [23] [24] saying that "People, who understand jazz have taken the music really well. But the ones who did not understand, the music went above their heads. If the film had worked it would've changed the course of jazz scene in the country." [3] He also criticized the producers for not promoting the film's music as they felt it "too jazzy". [25] He still regarded it as one of his personal favourites. [26] [27] Trivedi was nominated for Best Original Music at the 10th Asian Film Awards, the only award he was nominated for the film. [28]
However, the soundtrack featured in several year-ender lists by critics. Karthik Srinivasan's article for The Hindu listed "Mohabbat Buri Bimari" as one of the top five Hindi songs of 2015. [29] He also called the album as "the top Hindi film soundtrack" in his music review round-up for Milliblog, [30] commenting "The variety of tunes recreating the Bombay of yore, demonstrated aptly the kind of ambition Amit set for himself, and he got some phenomenal singers to deliver." [29] Bradley Fernandes of Filmfare ranked "Mohabbat Buri Bimari" in the fifth position as the best Hindi film songs of that year. [31] "Fifi" was listed among NDTV 's "Top 10 Bollywood Songs of 2015". [32]
Bombay Velvet's soundtrack was featured in decade-end lists, which includes Devesh Sharma's article for Filmfare, published on World Music Day (21 June 2021), [33] Akshay Manwani's review for Firstpost , [34] Sankhayan Ghosh's review for Film Companion , [35] and Vipin Nair's list for The Hindu. [36] Tatsam Mukherjee's article for Huffington Post about "The Top 20 Bollywood Albums Since 2000" listed the album at number 14. [37] On Vipin Nair's list of "Top 100 Bollywood Albums" for Film Companion, Bombay Velvet was ranked at number 91. [38] It was also regarded at one of Trivedi's best albums. [39]
Dev.D is a 2009 Indian Hindi-language romantic drama film released on 6 February 2009. Written and directed by Anurag Kashyap, it is a modern-day take on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's classic Bengali novel Devdas, previously adapted for the screen by P.C. Barua and Bimal Roy and more recently by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Dev.D received positive critical reviews. The film is set in contemporary Punjab and Delhi, where familial ties are negotiated by the traditional system and marriages are a game of power and a matter of honour.
Monali Thakur is an Indian singer and actress. She is the recipient of several awards including a National Film Award for the song "Moh Moh Ke Dhaage" from the film Dum Laga Ke Haisha (2015) and a Filmfare Award for the song "Sawaar Loon" from the Film "Lootera" (2013). She was a judge of Zee TV's singing reality show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L'il Champs 2014. She was also an "expert" on Colors TV's Rising Star for two consecutive seasons.
Amit Trivedi is an Indian music director, singer, film scorer, composer, music producer and lyricist who works primarily in Hindi films. After working as a theatre and jingle composer and composing for non-film albums, he debuted as a film composer in the 2008 Hindi film Aamir, he gained prominence for his work in the Hindi film Dev.D (2009).. He is considered as one of the best music composers in the present bollywood music industry due to his unique style of composition and originality, gaining a huge fanbase.
Neeti Mohan Sharma is an Indian singer. She sings mainly in Hindi and Tamil films, but has also sung songs in Marathi, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali, Punjabi and English. Born in Delhi, she was one of the winners of the Channel V's reality show Popstars, subsequently being chosen for Aasma, with other winners of the show. She rose to prominence after recording "Ishq Wala Love" for Student of the Year (2012), ultimately winning the Filmfare R. D. Burman Award for New Music Talent and was nominated for the Best Female Playback Singer for "Jiya Re" from Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012).
Lootera is a 2013 Indian Hindi-language period romantic drama film directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and the second half is based on author O. Henry's 1907 short story The Last Leaf. It is the second film directed by Motwane after the critically acclaimed Udaan (2010). Set in the era of the 1950s, against the backdrop of the Zamindari Abolition Act by the newly independent India, it tells the story of a young conman posing as an archaeologist and the daughter of a Bengali zamindar. The film stars Sonakshi Sinha and Ranveer Singh in lead roles. Produced by Shobha Kapoor, Ekta Kapoor, Anurag Kashyap and Vikas Bahl, the film features music and background score by Amit Trivedi with lyrics penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya and cinematography by Mahendra J. Shetty.
Shalmali Kholgade is an Indian playback singer, who predominantly sings for Hindi language films. In addition to Hindi, she has also sung in other Indian languages such as Marathi, Bengali, Telugu and Tamil. She has received several awards including a Filmfare Award and a Filmfare Award Marathi and has been praised for her singing style.
Bombay Velvet is a 2015 Indian period gangster film directed and co-produced by Anurag Kashyap, based on historian Gyan Prakash's book Mumbai Fables. It stars Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Karan Johar in lead roles, with Kay Kay Menon, Manish Choudhary, Vivaan Shah and Siddhartha Basu appearing in supporting roles. The film was released on 15 May 2015.
Phantom Studios is an Indian filmproduction and distribution company established by Madhu Mantena, Anurag Kashyap, Vikas Bahl, and Vikramaditya Motwane. It was founded in 2011 by all four of them, and was cited as the "directors' company". In March 2015, Reliance Entertainment picked up 50% stake in the company.
Queen is the soundtrack album by Amit Trivedi, to the 2014 Hindi film Queen directed by Vikas Bahl and starring Kangana Ranaut in lead role. The album features eight tracks in a different array of genres. It was released digitally on 25 January 2014, with an exclusive release in iTunes on 23 January 2014. A physical release was held on 5 February 2014 at the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival in Mumbai, attended by the cast and crew of the film and preceded by Trivedi's performance.
Anurag Kashyap is an Indian filmmaker and actor, known for his work in Hindi cinema. After writing a television series Kabhie Kabhie (1997), Kashyap co-wrote Ram Gopal Varma's crime drama Satya (1998). He later wrote and directed a short television film, Last Train to Mahakali (1999), and made his feature film debut with the yet-unreleased film Paanch. He next directed Black Friday (2007), a film on the 1993 Bombay bombings. Its release was barred by India's Censor Board for two years, but was eventually released in 2007 to positive reviews. The same year, he directed the critical and commercial failure No Smoking. Return of Hanuman (2007), an animated film, was Kashyap's next directorial venture. In 2009, he directed Dev.D, a modern-day take on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's Bengali novel Devdas, along with the political drama Gulaal. Despite positive reviews, the latter was a box-office failure.
Manmarziyaan is a 2018 Indian Hindi-language romantic drama directed by Anurag Kashyap and written by Kanika Dhillon. Starring Taapsee Pannu, Vicky Kaushal and Abhishek Bachchan in lead roles, it is jointly produced by Phantom Films and Aanand L. Rai's Colour Yellow Productions.
Andhadhun (transl. Blindly) is the soundtrack to the 2018 Indian Hindi-language black comedy crime thriller film of the same name directed by Sriram Raghavan. The album features ten tunes; six songs, three instrumental theme tracks, alternative versions for two of the songs featured in the album. Most of the tracks were composed by Amit Trivedi, excluding one song – the title track of the film was written, composed and recorded by Raftaar and Girish Nakod. Lyrics for Trivedi's compositions were written by Jaideep Sahni and vocals for the songs in the album were provided by Trivedi, Raftaar, Ayushmann Khurrana, Arijit Singh, Abhijeet Srivastava, Aakansha Sharma, Shadab Faridi and Altamash Faridi. The film score was composed by Daniel B. George. The album released on 5 September 2018 through the Zee Music Company record label.
Jagga Jasoos is the soundtrack album to the 2017 Hindi-language film of the same name directed by Anurag Basu, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif in the lead roles. Besides acting, Kapoor also produced the film under his Pictureshuru Entertainment, along with Disney Pictures India. The film's soundtrack and background score is composed by Pritam in his fourth collaboration with Basu, whereas the lyrics for the songs were written by Amitabh Bhattacharya and Neelesh Misra. The film features dialogues in a sing-song rhymes format written by Samrat Chakraborty, Devesh Kapoor and Debatma Mandal along with Bhattacharya and Basu themselves.
Barfi! is the soundtrack album for the 2012 Hindi film of the same name. The music and original score is composed by Pritam and featured lyrics written by Swanand Kirkire, Ashish Pandit, Neelesh Misra and Sayeed Quadri. The film is directed by Anurag Basu and produced by Ronnie Screwvala and Siddharth Roy Kapur under UTV Motion Pictures, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, and Ileana D'Cruz in the lead roles. The film marks Pritam's third collaboration with Basu after Gangster (2006) and Life in a... Metro (2007). The album was under-development, when the film was in post-production stage and was completed only by early-August 2012. All the tracks in the film expresses the feelings of Kapoor's character.
Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is the soundtrack to the 2013 Hindi film of the same name directed by Ayan Mukerji. Produced by Karan Johar under Dharma Productions banner, the film starred Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone in lead roles, while Kalki Koechlin and Aditya Roy Kapur play supporting roles. The film's music and score is composed by Pritam with lyrics written by Amitabh Bhattacharya, except for one song written by Kumaar.
Mirzya is the soundtrack album to the 2016 film of the same name directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra from a story written by Gulzar, loosely inspired on the Punjabi folklore of Mirza Sahiban. The film's music is composed by Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy collaborating with Mehra after Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013) and composed nine songs for the film, and six short songs based on the folklore has been composed by singer Daler Mehndi; all of them were written by Gulzar. The soundtrack accompanied all the 15 tracks that influenced a variety of genres such as electronic dance, jazz, blues, folk, retro, classical and Sufi music.
Dev.D is the soundtrack to the 2009 film of the same name directed by Anurag Kashyap. A modern-day adaptation of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's Bengali novel Devdas, the film stars Abhay Deol, Mahie Gill and Kalki Koechlin as the principal characters, Dev, Paro and Chandramukhi, based on the novel. The album featured 18 tracks composed by Amit Trivedi with lyrics for the songs written by Amitabh Bhattacharya, Shellee, Anusha Mani, and Shruti Pathak, and consisted of a variety of genres.
PK is the soundtrack to the 2014 film of the same name directed by Rajkumar Hirani. The soundtrack featured seven tracks—four songs and a theme music composed by Shantanu Moitra, and one song each composed by Ajay–Atul and Ankit Tiwari. Swanand Kirkire penned four songs, while Manoj Muntashir and Amitabh Varma penned one song each. The soundtrack was released on 5 November 2014, preceded by four singles: "Tharki Chokro" "Love Is a Waste of Time", "Nanga Punga Dost" and "Chaar Kadam".
Bodyguard is the soundtrack to the 2011 film of the same name directed by Siddique Ismail starring Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor. The film's soundtrack is composed by Himesh Reshammiya and Pritam, with lyrics written by Shabbir Ahmed and Neelesh Misra. The 12-song soundtrack featured four tracks used in the film, while also accompanied by remixes, alternatives and a theme music. It was released by T-Series on 27 July 2011.
Kick is the soundtrack to the 2014 film of the same name directed and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala. An adaptation of the eponymous 2009 Telugu film, it stars Salman Khan, Jacqueline Fernandez, Randeep Hooda and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. The soundtrack features 18 songs, with five original tracks curated by Himesh Reshammiya, Meet Bros. Anjjan and Yo Yo Honey Singh and written by Kumaar, Shabbir Ahmed, Mayur Puri, Yo Yo Honey Singh and Jasmine Sandlas. The remainder is accompanied by remixes and alternate versions of those original tracks. T-Series released the soundtrack album on 27 June 2014.
