Carolyn Joyce Hunt is an American educator and politician who,as the wife of Jim Hunt,served as the Second Lady of North Carolina from 1973 to 1977 and twice-served as the First Lady of North Carolina,from 1977 to 1985 and again from 1993 to 2001. She is the longest serving first lady in North Carolina history and she and her husband were the first governor and first lady to serve two four-year terms in North Carolina. As first lady,she served as the Chairwoman of the advisory council for the Governor's Office of Citizen Affairs,which promoted volunteerism throughout the state,and as Chairwoman of the North Carolina Friendship Force Program,a chapter of Friendship Force International,which promoted international student exchange programs in state public schools. In between her terms as first lady,she served on the board of directors and the executive committee of Friendship Force International and,in 1986,was elected to the Wilson County Public School Board.

She is the founder and artistic director of COMPANY,a co-founder and co-organizer of Durham Independent Dance Artists,former board president of the North Carolina Dance Alliance,and producer of the PROMPTS art series in Durham,North Carolina. Tornow is trained in Cunningham technique and is a New York Public Library Research Fellow in Cunningham dance pedagogy. She serves on the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro,Elon University,and the American Dance Festival.

On October 9,2017,the Elon Board of Trustees voted unanimously to elect Book as the ninth president of Elon. She became president on March 1,2018. Prior to her appointment as President of Elon,Book served for two years as the first female Provost and Dean of Academic Affairs at The Citadel,The Military College of South Carolina.

As the wife of Oliver Max Gardner,she served as the Second Lady of North Carolina from 1917 to 1923 and as First Lady of North Carolina from 1929 to 1933. Webb-Gardner was active in cultural and civic endeavors and was a member of the American Red Cross,the Woman's Missionary Union,the North Carolina Symphony Society,the National Civic League,and the League of Women Voters,as well as Chairwoman of the North Carolina State Advisory Board of Paroles. A Democrat,she served on the North Carolina Democratic Committee and the Democratic National Committee,and was twice elected as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention.
Dorothy Ann "Dottie" Martin is an American educator and real estate broker who,as the wife of Governor James G. Martin,served as the First Lady of North Carolina from 1985 to 1993. As first lady,she supported protections for children and substance abuse prevention efforts. Martin also relandscaped the grounds of the North Carolina Executive Mansion and contributed to the establishment of a program within the North Carolina Department of Transportation for planting wildflower beds along state highways. As Secretary of Cultural Resources,McCain opened the North Carolina Museum of History,rededicated USS North Carolina (BB-55),and secured funding for the excavation of the Queen Anne's Revenge. She received the North Carolina Award in 2009 and was inducted into the North Carolina Women's Hall of Fame in 2010.

She worked as a researcher for the global business magazine Fortune in New York from 1952 to 1967,when she returned to North Carolina to marry the politician Lauch Faircloth. During their marriage,her husband served as the Chairman of the North Carolina State Highway Commission and the North Carolina Secretary of Commerce.
