Brent Monson is a Canadian football coach who is the defensive coordinator for the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League (CFL). [1]

Early coaching career

At the start of his coaching career, Monson assisted with amateur teams, serving as the strength and conditioning coach, special teams coordinator and defensive backs coach for the Steel City Ironmen of the Ontario Varsity Football League for two seasons. [2] He also served four seasons for Bishop Tonnos Catholic Secondary School in Hamilton as defensive backs, special teams and strength and conditioning coach. [2]

In 2009, Monson moved to the professional ranks when he became an assistant in the video department for the Calgary Stampeders. [3] The following year, he gained his first professional coaching opportunity when he was promoted to the team's defensive quality control coach assisting with the linebackers, as well as the strength and conditioning coach. [3] [4] Monson transitioned to coaching Calgary's defensive line coach while continuing as strength and conditioning coach in 2011. [5] He remained as strength and conditioning coach, but moved to the offensive side of the ball in 2012 when he became running backs coach, roles he continued to hold for the 2013, and 2014 seasons. [5] In 2015, he moved back to coaching on the defensive side of the ball when he became Calgary's linebackers coach. [6] This was a position he continued to hold for the 2016, 2017, and 2018 seasons. [1] Monson was a member of Calgary's coaching staffs when the team won the 2014 and 2018 Grey Cups. [5]

Defensive coordinator

Following the 2018 Grey Cup win, DeVone Claybrooks, who had been Calgary's defensive coordinator, was hired by the BC Lions to be their head coach for the 2019 season, leading to a vacancy at defensive coordinator for Calgary. [7] On December 14, 2018, Monson was promoted to Calgary's defensive coordinator for the 2019 season. [8] Monson has retained the defensive coordinator position for Calgary in 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023, while once again holding the linebackers coach position for the 2021 season. [1]

He is a two-time Grey Cup champion, winning in 2008 and 2014 with the Stampeders. In his first season, he won the CFL Rookie of the Year award, followed by five West Division All-Star and three CFL All-Star awards. He is second all-time as a Stampeder in receptions (805), receiving yards (11,250), and touchdown catches (65) behind Allen Pitts. He also has the club record for consecutive games with a reception, with 166. On August 24, 2017, Lewis became the CFL all-time leader in receptions with 1,030 catches.

He has also been the defensive coordinator for the Calgary Stampeders. On December 11, 2018, he was announced as head coach of the BC Lions, replacing the retired Wally Buono. Claybrooks played college football at East Carolina.

The 2020 BC Lions season was scheduled to be the 63rd season for the team in the Canadian Football League (CFL) and their 67th overall. Training camps, pre-season games, and regular season games were initially postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The CFL announced on April 7, 2020 that the start of the 2020 CFL season would not occur before July 2020. On May 20, 2020, it was announced that the league would likely not begin regular season play prior to September 2020. On August 17, 2020 however, the season was officially cancelled due to COVID-19.
