Marc Mueller (born April 15, 1989) is the offensive coordinator for the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He is a two-time Grey Cup champion as an assistant coach with the Calgary Stampeders. In university, he played quarterback for the Regina Rams of the CIS from 2007 to 2012.

Early life

In 2006, Mueller quarterbacked Regina's Sheldon-Williams Spartans to the Saskatchewan 4A high school championship. [1]

University career

Mueller joined the Regina Rams for the 2007 season, dressing for all eight regular season games and both playoff games as the team's second-string quarterback. [1] In 2008, Mueller dressed for all eight regular season games and the team's Canada West semifinal game at Calgary as a backup quarterback. [1]

2008 was Teale Orban's last year of eligibility playing university football. Mueller took over from him as the starting quarterback for the 2009 season, [2] and started all eight of the team's regular season games and the team's one playoff game. That year, he set a Rams single-season record with 310 pass attempts, also led the Canada West Conference in pass completions (176) and yards (2308). Mueller threw for a Rams postseason record with 470 passing yards in the team's Canada West semifinal game at Saskatchewan on November 7. [1]

In 2010, Mueller once again started all eight of the Rams regular season games and the team's one playoff game. He set a Ram single-season record in pass completions (182) and led the conference in passing yards (2437). Mueller was named the Canada West Offensive Player of the Week after throwing two touchdown passes and rushing for two more in a 40-8 win over Alberta on October 2. [1]

Mueller's 2011 season was cut short when he suffered a season-ending injury on the team's second play from scrimmage against UBC on September 2. Because of his injury, he was granted a medical redshirt. [1]

In 2012, Mueller started six regular season and both playoff games at quarterback for the Rams. He engineered a game-winning touchdown drive against Manitoba that spanned nine plays and 95 yards. He was injured at the beginning of that drive and missed the team's next two games. In the Rams' Canada West Semifinal win on November 2 against Saskatchewan, Mueller was named the Canada West and CIS Offensive Player of the Week after completing 21 of 32 passes for 393 yards and three touchdowns. Mueller finished his career as the Rams' all-time leader in pass completion rate (62.1%), second on the team's all-time list in career pass completions (511) and passing yards (6522), and third in touchdown passes (34). [1]

Professional career

Mueller signed as an undrafted free agent with the Edmonton Eskimos of the CFL on May 9, 2011, following the 2011 CFL Draft. [3] He saw game action in Edmonton's first preseason game, a game played in Regina against his hometown team, the Saskatchewan Roughriders. In that game, Mueller was 3 for 3 passing for 45 yards. [4] He was released on June 20, 2011 and returned to the Rams. [5]

Regina Rams

In 2013, after completing his Regina Rams playing eligibility, Mueller joined the team as quarterbacks coach. [6]

Calgary Stampeders

On February 18, 2014, Mueller was named a defensive assistant coach for the Calgary Stampeders. [7] That year, he won his first Grey Cup when Calgary defeated Hamilton. From 2015 to 2019, Mueller was the Stampeders' running backs coach. [8] [9] During that span, Calgary went to the Grey Cup in 2016, 2017, and 2018, with the team winning in 2018. He was named the quarterbacks coach for the Stampeders on January 16, 2020. [10] In 2021, he held the titles of quarterbacks and running backs coach, and quarterbacks coach for the 2022 and 2023 seasons. [9]

Saskatchewan Roughriders

On December 6, 2023, it was announced that Mueller had been hired as the offensive coordinator of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, to a two-year term. [11]

Personal life

Mueller is the grandson of former CFL quarterback and coach Ron Lancaster. [3]

He played college football as a quarterback at the University of Iowa and was signed by the St. Louis Rams of the National Football League (NFL) as an undrafted free agent in 2007. Tate has played professionally for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Calgary Stampeders and Ottawa Redblacks in the CFL. He was a defensive analyst at Coastal Carolina University in 2018, before coming out of retirement to rejoin the Roughriders. On December 17, 2018, Tate retired from playing and was named quarterbacks coach for the BC Lions the following day. He has also been a coach for the TSL Alphas, and at UT Martin and the University of Northern Iowa.

The 2008 CFL season was the 55th season of modern-day Canadian football, the 51st season for the Canadian Football League. It was also the first CFL season in which all of the league's regular season and post-season games, including the Grey Cup game, were aired on TSN. This meant the CFL was no longer aired on broadcast television in Canada. As of 2008, TSN was available in approximately 8.8 million of Canada's 13 million households. Montreal hosted the 96th Grey Cup at Olympic Stadium on November 23, when the championship was won by the Calgary Stampeders.

The 2007 Calgary Stampeders season was the 50th season for the team in the Canadian Football League and their 69th overall. After promising second place finishes in the West Division in 2005 (11–7) and 2006 (10–8) they finished third in the West Division in 2007, with a disappointing 7–10–1 record, their first losing record in three seasons. They were defeated in the Western Semi-Final 26–24 by the eventual Grey Cup champion Saskatchewan Roughriders. The season was the last in which the team recorded more than two consecutive losses in the regular season in 10 years, recording three consecutive losses to close out the 2017 Calgary Stampeders season.

Chris Getzlaf is a Canadian former professional football slotback who played in the Canadian Football League (CFL) from 2007 to 2017. He was drafted in the fifth round of the 2007 CFL Draft, 33rd overall, by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, and was later traded that season to the Saskatchewan Roughriders. He has also been a member of the Edmonton Eskimos. The 2010 CFL season is the 57th season of modern-day Canadian football. Officially, it is the 53rd Canadian Football League season. Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton hosted the 98th Grey Cup on November 28 when the Montreal Alouettes became the first team to repeat as Grey Cup Champions in 13 years, defeating the Saskatchewan Roughriders, 21–18. The league announced on its Twitter page on January 29, 2010 that the season would start on July 1, 2010. As of 2021 this is the most recent CFL regular season to start in July.

As Edinboro's starting quarterback, he broke "every career passing record in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference" and was a two-time finalist for the Harlon Hill Trophy, awarded each year to the individual selected as the most valuable player in NCAA Division II.

The 2013 Saskatchewan Roughriders season was the 56th season for the team in the Canadian Football League. The Roughriders improved upon their 8–10 record from 2012 and made the playoffs for the second straight season, while hosting their first playoff game since 2010. After defeating the BC Lions and Calgary Stampeders in the playoffs, the Roughriders qualified for their fourth Grey Cup appearance in seven years and first ever at their home stadium. The team defeated the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 45-23 in the 101st Grey Cup en route to winning the franchise's fourth championship. With the added seats at Mosaic Stadium at Taylor Field, the Roughriders led the league in attendance for the first time, with an average of 37,503 fans attending each regular season game.

The 2019 CFL season was the 66th season of modern-day Canadian football. Officially, it was the 62nd Canadian Football League season. The regular season began on June 13 and concluded with the playing of the 107th Grey Cup in Calgary on November 24 —where the Winnipeg Blue Bombers defeated the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 33–12 to win their first Grey Cup since 1990.

The final 1983 Canadian Football League regular season game was played at McMahon Stadium in Calgary, Alberta on Sunday, November 6, 1983 between the Calgary Stampeders and the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Entering the game, the host Stampeders had an 8-7 record and needed only a tie to make the playoffs while the Roughriders had a 4-11 record and were eliminated from playoff contention. After trailing for most of the game, the Roughriders scored a touchdown off of a turnover with only 27 seconds remaining and upset the Stampeders by a final score of 27-23.

The history of the Saskatchewan Roughriders dates to 1910 when they were founded as the Regina Rugby Club and became charter members of the Saskatchewan Rugby Football Union. The team changed their name to the Regina Roughriders in 1924 and became charter members of the Western Interprovincial Football Union in 1936. They began using their current moniker in 1946 and adopted it officially in 1950. The Roughriders became a charter member of the Canadian Football League when it was founded in 1958.
