Mitchell Picton (born May 29, 1995) is a professional Canadian football wide receiver for the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League (CFL).

University career

Picton played U Sports football for the Regina Rams from 2013 to 2017. [1] He was named a Canada West All-Star and CIS First-Team All-Canadian in 2016 after leading the country with 11 receiving touchdowns. [1] He returned to the team in 2017 to complete his last year of playing eligibility. After a five-year career, Picton finished as the Rams' all-time touchdown leader with 24 scored. [1]

Professional career

Picton was drafted in the fifth round, 37th overall, by his hometown Saskatchewan Roughriders and signed with the team on May 26, 2017. [2] He spent training camp with the team in 2017, but returned to school to play one last year with the Regina Rams. After the Rams season ended on November 4, 2017, he was re-signed by the Roughriders on November 15, 2017 and was on the practice roster for the team's loss to the Toronto Argonauts in the East Final. [3]

After re-signing with the Roughriders on December 12, 2017, Picton attended 2018 training camp with the team and spent the 2018 season on the practice roster. [4] In 2019, he again began the season on the practice roster, but played in his first career professional game on July 27, 2019 against the BC Lions. [5] He dressed in one other game that year against the Montreal Alouettes, but did not record any receptions in either game.

Picton did not play in 2020 due to the cancellation of the 2020 CFL season. He made the team's active roster following 2021 training camp and recorded his first career reception in the opening game on August 6, 2021 against the BC Lions. [6] In the following week's game, on August 14, 2021, he scored his first career professional touchdown on an 8-yard pass from Cody Fajardo against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. [7]

Personal life

Picton's brother, Aaron, played for the Regina Rams from 2010 to 2015 and was drafted by the Calgary Stampeders in 2015. [8] His cousin, Noah Picton, played for the Rams from 2013 to 2018 as the team's quarterback and was a member of the Toronto Argonauts. [9]

While playing university football, Clermont was named an All-Star and All-Canadian, as well as the Most Valuable Player in the Canada West Conference and represented Western Canada as one of only 2 Canadian players in the East West Shrine Bowl in San Francisco. As a professional, Clermont's honours have included being named the CFL's Most Outstanding Rookie in 2002, Most Outstanding Canadian in 2004 and 2007, as well as the Most Valuable Canadian at the 2004 Grey Cup. Clermont captured a Grey Cup championship with the Lions in 2006. He joined his hometown Roughriders at the start of the 2009 season after being released by the Lions and is now a member of the Regina Sports Hall of Fame as well as the University of Regina Hall of Fame and BC Lions Wall of Fame.

Drew Tate is an American gridiron football coach and former player. He is the receivers coach for the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He played college football as a quarterback at the University of Iowa and was signed by the St. Louis Rams of the National Football League (NFL) as an undrafted free agent in 2007. Tate has played professionally for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Calgary Stampeders and Ottawa Redblacks in the CFL. He was a defensive analyst at Coastal Carolina University in 2018, before coming out of retirement to rejoin the Roughriders. On December 17, 2018, Tate retired from playing and was named quarterbacks coach for the BC Lions the following day. He has also been a coach for the TSL Alphas, and at UT Martin and the University of Northern Iowa.

Darian Bernard Durant is a former professional Canadian football quarterback. He played college football at the University of North Carolina. By the end of his college career, he held school records for completion percentage, touchdowns, passing yards, total offense and completions. Durant was signed as a free agent by the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2006, and became the club's full-time starting quarterback in 2009. He was named a CFL West Division All-Star in 2009 and 2013. Durant was the starting quarterback when the Saskatchewan Roughriders won the 101st Grey Cup in 2013 on their home field. Durant also played for the Montreal Alouettes in 2017. His brother Justin played in the National Football League as a linebacker.

Chris Getzlaf is a Canadian former professional football slotback who played in the Canadian Football League (CFL) from 2007 to 2017. He was drafted in the fifth round of the 2007 CFL Draft, 33rd overall, by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, and was later traded that season to the Saskatchewan Roughriders. He has also been a member of the Edmonton Eskimos. Prior to turning pro, Getzlaf played with the junior team Prairie Thunder and the collegiate team Regina Rams in his hometown of Regina, Saskatchewan.
