Mario Alford (born February 25, 1992) is an American professional football wide receiver and Return specialist for the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He played college football for the West Virginia Mountaineers, earning first-team All-American honors in 2014. [1] [2] [3]
Alford was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the seventh round, 238th overall, in the 2015 NFL draft. [4] He played in one game his rookie year with the Bengals registering one catch for 15 yards. On September 3, 2016, he was released by the Bengals. [5]
On November 16, 2016, Alford was signed to the practice squad of the New York Jets. [6] He was released by the team on December 6, 2016. [7]
Alford was signed to the Cleveland Browns' practice squad on December 13, 2016. [8] He was promoted to the active roster on December 17, 2016. [9]
On September 1, 2017, Alford was waived by the Browns during roster cutdowns. [10]
On September 12, 2017, Alford was signed to the Chicago Bears' practice squad. [11]
On June 3, 2018, Alford signed with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League (CFL). In his lone season in Toronto, Alford appeared in six games and caught seven passes for 57 yards, returned eight kick-offs for 170 yards, had five punt returns for seven yards, and rushed the ball once for 10 yards. [12] He was released on May 25, 2019.
On September 24, 2019, it was announced that Alford had signed with the Montreal Alouettes of the CFL. [13] He was signed for the 2021 season on December 15, 2020. [14] Over parts of three seasons, Alford played in nine games with the Alouettes where he had 24 kickoff returns for 477 yards, 26 punt returns for 486 yards and three touchdowns, and two missed field goal returns for 45 yards. [12]
On July 3, 2022, Alford was traded to the Saskatchewan Roughriders in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2023 CFL Draft. [15] He played in 13 regular season games for the team where he had 38 kickoff returns for 990 yards and two touchdowns, 44 punt returns for 530 yards and one touchdown, and three missed field goal returns for 129 yards and one touchdown. [12] For his strong season, he was named the CFL's Most Outstanding Special Teams Player in 2022. [16]
On November 15, 2022, the Roughriders announced that Alford had signed a contract extension with the team. [17] In 2023, he had 2,266 combined yards (978 punt return, 1,181 kickoff return, 107 missed field goal return). Alford added three touchdowns on punt returns, including two on July 15 against the Calgary Stampeders.
On January 4, 2024, the Roughriders announced that Alford had signed a one-year contract extension with the team. [18]
Chad Owens Sr. is an American former professional football wide receiver and kick returner who played for three years in the National Football League (NFL) and nine years in the Canadian Football League (CFL). He was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the sixth round of the 2005 NFL draft. Owens played college football at Hawaii. He spent six seasons playing for the Toronto Argonauts, and has also been a member of the Montreal Alouettes, Hamilton Tiger-Cats, and Saskatchewan Roughriders. Owen's is also a professional bodybuilder who competes in the IFBB Men's Physique Division.
Sandro DeAngelis is a former professional gridiron football placekicker. He last played during the 2013 season for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League. He had also played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Montreal Alouettes, Calgary Stampeders and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. DeAngelis is among the most accurate kickers in CFL history and he won his first Grey Cup championship with the Calgary Stampeders in 2008.
Marquay McDaniel is the receivers coach for the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He is a former professional Canadian football wide receiver who played for 10 seasons in the CFL, six with the Calgary Stampeders and four with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. He was originally signed by the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent in 2007. McDaniel was named a CFL All-Star in 2013, and won a Grey Cup championship in 2014. He played college football for the Hampton Pirates.
Andrew Austin Hawkins is an American former professional football wide receiver. He played six seasons in the National Football League (NFL) with the Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns and two seasons for the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League (CFL), where he was part of back-to-back Grey Cup Championships. He had signed with the New England Patriots in the 2017 offseason, but announced his retirement just days before training camp. He played college football for the Toledo Rockets from 2004 to 2007.
Naaman I. Roosevelt is an American former professional football wide receiver who is currently the receivers coach for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League (CFL). During his playing career, he was a member of the Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Saskatchewan Roughriders, Montreal Alouettes and Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He played college football for the Buffalo Bulls.
Jacoby Ford is an American former professional football player who was a wide receiver and return specialist. He was selected by the Oakland Raiders in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL draft. He was also an accomplished track and field athlete. He played college football as a wide receiver and return specialist for the Clemson Tigers at Clemson University, where he competed in sprinting events. During his stint in the NFL, Ford was widely regarded as one of the fastest players in the league. He has one of the top 100 meter times by NFL players.
Chris Williams is an American former professional Canadian football wide receiver of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He played college football at New Mexico State. Williams was signed by the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted free agent in 2009. He made his professional debut for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (CFL) in 2011. Williams was also a member of the Cleveland Browns, New Orleans Saints, Chicago Bears, Ottawa Redblacks, BC Lions and Montreal Alouettes.
