Brij Lal

Brij Lal is a Fijian politician and Member of the Parliament of Fiji. He is of Indian descent.

Lal was educated at Labasa College. He later went on to achieve a Teaching certificate from the National Teachers College. He did his Bachelor of Arts at the University of the South Pacific as well as his Postgraduate diploma. He got his Master's of science from the Royal Ireland Institute of Business and Technology.

He taught in multiple schools in Labasa after graduating. He was made an Education Officer for the Macuata/Bua region and later a Senior Education Officer. He served the Cakaudrove District as well as Lautoka. He also served as Program's Manager on the AusAid funded Fiji Education Sector Program.

While rising through the ranks, he collected many medals including Long Service Commendation Award, Medal of Merit, Universal Bridge Gold Medal and the Civil Service Medal. He was also the Deputy Chief Commissioner of the Fiji Scouts Association.

In June 2010, he was appointed the Permanent Secretary for Education, National Heritage, Culture & Arts, Youth & Sports after the former secretary, Filipe Jitoko resigned. [1]

He stood for Fiji First in the 2014 general elections. He collected 2700 votes and was elected as a Member of Parliament. [2]

Brij V. Lal is an Indo-Fijian historian. He was born in Labasa, on the northern island of Vanua Levu. He was educated at the University of the South Pacific, the University of British Columbia and the Australian National University. A harsh critic of the Bainimarama government, which originated in the military coup of 2006 and retained power in the 2014 elections, he is currently living in exile in Australia.

Emasi Qovu is a former Fijian politician, served in the House of Representatives from 2001 to 2006. Whilst in Parliament he was appointed Government Whip in 2005–2006.

Ratu Josaia Naulumatua Rayawa is a Fijian Chief, religious minister, and former political leader. He served in the Senate from 2001 to 2006 as one of nine nominees of the Fijian Prime Minister, Laisenia Qarase. He had previously been President of the now-defunct Christian Democratic Alliance (VLV), which won three seats in the 1999 election.

Parmod Chand is a Fijian politician and a member of the Fijian Parliament. He is a member of the National Federation Party (NFP).

Mahendra Sukhdeo is a former Fiji Indian unionist and politician, who was one of the founding members of the Fiji Labour Party, but only a few months later resigned from the party due to disagreement with the leadership over the direction in which the party was being steered.

Unlike the majority of Fiji's Indian population, who are descendants of Indian indentured labourers brought to Fiji between 1879 and 1916, most of the Sikhs came to Fiji as free immigrants. Most Sikhs established themselves as farmers. Sikhs also came to Fiji as policemen, teachers and preachers. In recent years large numbers of Sikhs have emigrated from Fiji, especially to the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. Sikhs in Fiji are generally referred to as Punjabis.

Labasa College is a state secondary school for Forms 3 to 7 in Labasa, Fiji. It has a roll of more than 650 students as of January 2013, including a collection of boarding students from across the Northern Division of Fiji making it one of the most diverse and academically proficient educational institutions in the country.

Mereseini Vuniwaqa Fijian politician (born 1974)

Mereseini Rakuita Vuniwaqa is a Fijian politician, serving as the Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation since 2016. A member of the Fiji First Party, Vuniwaqa was first elected as a Member of Parliament in 2014 and appointed to Cabinet, holding the portfolio for the Ministry for Lands and Mineral Resources, becoming the first Fijian woman appointed to the position. As one of the most senior and influential Cabinet ministers, Vuniwaqa has been appointed on various occasions as an Acting Prime Minister on behalf of the Prime Minister in his absences overseas.

George Vegnathan is a Fijian politician and Member of the Parliament of Fiji for the FijiFirst Party. He is currently the Assistant Minister for the Sugar Industry. He is from Vunika, Macuata, and lives in Labasa. Prior to his election, he worked as a teacher for 32 years. He also works as the executive officer for TISI Sangam in Labasa. He was elected to Parliament in the 2018 election. He is married, and has four children.

Minute Alapati Taupo OBE is a Tuvaluan politician, diplomat, economist and accountant. Taupo was elected to the Parliament of Tuvalu in the 2019 Tuvaluan general election to represent the Nanumanga electorate. He was appointed as Deputy Prime Minister & Minister for Fisheries and Trade in the Natano Ministry.
