Premila Kumar is a Fijian consumer advocate,politician and former Cabinet Minister. She served as chief executive of the Consumer Council of Fiji from 2006 to 2018,and then as a Cabinet Minister in the government of Frank Bainimarama from 2018 to 2022. She is a member of the FijiFirst party.
Kumar was born in Suva and educated at Suva Methodist Primary School,Dudley Intermediate,and Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School. [1] She then studied for a bachelor of science at Sophia College for Women in India,before working as a teacher. [1] She later completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Education at the University of the South Pacific,and a Master of Science in trade and the environment in the Netherlands. [2] She later worked as a Government environmental advocate and as an investment manager at Fiji Islands Trade &Investment Bureau. [3]
In 2006 she was appointed chief executive of the Consumer Council of Fiji. [2] As chief executive she led campaigns on drug prices, [4] bank fees, [5] and fuel prices, [6] among other issues. She also served as a council member of Consumers International. [2] She resigned as chief executive in July 2018 [7] in order to pursue a career in politics.
In 2010 the Fiji Times named her the most influential woman of the year. [2] In 2015 she was awarded the Executive Woman of the Year Award in 2015 by Women in Business. [8]
Kumar was selected as a candidate for the FijiFirst party for the 2018 Fijian general election. [9] She was elected,and appointed Minister for Industry,Trade,Tourism,Local Government,and Housing. [10] [11] As a Minister,she opposed the restoration of elected local councils,which had been abolished by the military regime in 2009. [12] A cabinet reshuffle in April 2020 saw her surrender the Commerce,Trade and Tourism portfolio to former Minister Faiyaz Koya,while continuing as Minister for Local Government,Housing and Community Development. [13] A further reshuffle in August 2021 saw her appointed Minister for Education,Heritage and Arts,and surrender the Housing and Community Development portfolios to Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum. [14]
She was re-elected in the 2022 election, [15] winning 1025 votes, [16] but lost her Cabinet position when the Bainimarama regime lost power to the coalition government. [17]
The politics of Fiji take place within the framework of a parliamentary representative democratic republic. Fiji has a multiparty system with the Prime Minister of Fiji as head of government. The executive power is exercised by the government. Legislative power is vested in both the government and the Parliament of Fiji. The judiciary is mostly independent of the executive and the legislature.
The Fiji Labour Party,also known as Fiji Labour,is a political party in Fiji. Most of its support is from the Indo-Fijian community,although it is officially multiracial and its first leader was an indigenous Fijian,Dr. Timoci Bavadra. The party has been elected to power twice,with Timoci Bavadra and Mahendra Chaudhry becoming prime minister in 1987 and 1999 respectively. On both occasions,the resulting government was rapidly overthrown by a coup.
Josaia Voreqe "Frank" Bainimarama is a Fijian politician and former naval officer who served as the prime minister of Fiji from 2007 until 2022. A member of the FijiFirst party,which he founded in 2014,he began his career as an officer in the Fijian navy and commander of the Fijian military. He served as the opposition leader from 24 December 2022 despite being suspended from Parliament until 8 March 2023,when he resigned and was replaced by Inia Seruiratu.
Josefa Bole Vosanibola is a former Fijian politician and Cabinet Minister. He is the father of former Social Democratic Liberal Party MP Peceli Vosanibola.
Poseci Waqalevu Bune is a former Fijian civil servant,diplomat,politician and Cabinet Minister. He has served as chair of the Public Service Commissioner,secretary to the Prime Minister,and as Fiji's permanent representative to the United Nations,as well as a Cabinet Minister in the governments of Mahendra Chaudhry and Laisenia Qarase,and in the military regime of Frank Bainimarama.
Rose Lavenia Bernadette Rounds Ganilau, born July 5,1951,as Lavenia Bernadette Rounds, is a Fijian writer,broadcaster,and politician,who served as Minister for Labour,Minister for Tourism,Industrial Relations,Productivity and Environment in the interim Cabinet of Commodore Frank Bainimarama,having been appointed on 9 January 2007. In previous political roles,she served in 2000 and 2001 in the Interim Government of Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase as Assistant Minister for Social Welfare,and from June to December 2006,she was Deputy Leader of the Opposition and Chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee of the House of Representatives,until the military coup of 5 December.
Parveen Kumar Bala is a Fijian politician and former Cabinet Minister. He served as Mayor of Ba from 1997 to 2009,and in the Cabinet of Frank Bainimarama from 2014 to 2022. He is a former president of the Fiji Local Government Association.
Adi Finau Tamari Tabakaucoro is a former Fijian civil servant and Cabinet Minister,who served as a Minister in the interim Cabinet appointed by Sitiveni Rabuka following the 1987 Fijian coups d'état,and as an assistant Minister in the interim Cabinet appointed by Laisenia Qarase in the wake of the 2000 Fijian coup d'état. She is currently president of the Soqosoqo Vakamarama I Taukei,Fiji's largest indigenous women's organisation.
Jiko Fatafehi Luveni was a Fijian politician and Speaker of the Parliament of Fiji. She was a member of the FijiFirst party before resigning her party membership in order to take up the position of Speaker. This was because the Fijian Speaker is not a Member of Parliament and cannot be a member of a political party pursuant to section 77(1)(a) and section 77(7)(b)(ii) of the Fijian Constitution.
Adi Litia Qionibaravi is a Fijian chief and former civil servant and member of the Parliament of Fiji. She is a member of the Social Democratic Liberal Party.
Ratu Manunivavalagi Korovulavula,OF,is a Fijian political leader and civil servant. A former Senator,Korovulavula was appointed Minister for Transport in the interim Cabinet of Commodore Frank Bainimarama on 8 January 2007,following the military coup on 5 December 2006. He had also previously served in Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara's Interim Cabinet after the 1987 coup led by Sitiveni Rabuka. He was an unsuccessful candidate twice,for the Fijian Association Party and National Alliance Party,in the elections of 1999 and 2006,respectively. He served as treasurer of both parties.
Attar Singh is an Indo-Fijian trade unionist. From 2002 to 2018 he was General Secretary of the Fiji Islands Council of Trade Unions (FICTU),one of two major umbrella bodies for trade unions in Fiji.
