The Brown Bears women's basketball team is the intercollegiate women's basketball program representing Brown University. The school competes in the Ivy League in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). [2] The Bears play home basketball games at the Pizzitola Sports Center in Providence, Rhode Island on the university campus. [3]

History

Brown has won 6 Ivy League championships, three of them outright (1984, 1992, 1993) and three shared (1985, 1994, 2006). [4] Twice they have played in a playoff (the league did not have a conference tournament until 2017) to determine the Ivy League bid for the NCAA Tournament, winning 72–62 win over Dartmouth in 1994 and losing 73–62 in 2006 to Dartmouth. It is home to the Brown University Bears men's and women's basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, wrestling and squash teams. It was built adjacent to Meehan Auditorium on Lloyd Avenue as a replacement for Marvel Gymnasium, which was located next to Brown Stadium on Elmgrove Ave. The building was named for Paul Bailey Pizzitola, whose father contributed $2 million to its construction. The lobby of the building is named for the Brown attendee (1887–89) and American football legend John Heisman.

The Ivy League women's basketball tournament is the conference tournament in basketball for the Ivy League, and is held alongside the Ivy League men's tournament at the same venue. The overall event is currently marketed as Ivy Madness. As with the men's tournament, the women's event is a single-elimination tournament involving the top four schools in the standings. The tournament format consists of two semifinal games on the first day (Saturday), with the No. 1 seed playing the No. 4 seed and the No. 2 seed playing the No. 3 seed, followed by the championship game played the next day (Sunday). The tournament winner receives the League's automatic bids to the NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament. The teams that finish with the best records from the 14-game, regular-season conference schedule will continue to be recognized as Ivy League champions.

The 2017–18 Brown Bears women's basketball team represented Brown University during the 2017–18 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The Bears, led by fourth year head coach Sarah Behn, played their home games at the Pizzitola Sports Center and were members of the Ivy League. They finished the season 15–12, 3–11 in Ivy League play to finish in a tie for sixth place. They failed to qualify for the Ivy women's tournament.
