Caccothryptus yunnanensis is a species of minute marsh-loving beetle in the subfamily Limnichinae. The species was described in 2018 by enomologist Hiroyuki Yoshitomi. Although part of the species group C. testudo, it is related to the C. compactus species C. chayuensis) and C. thai due to serrae due to their shared small notches along the median lobe. It is distinguished from these due to its straight parameres, which are curved in C. chayuensis and C. thai. C. yunnanensis specimens were collected by Yu-Tang Wang across the Chinese provinces of Guizhou and Yunnan, the latter of which gave the species its name. It is almost entirely black in coloration, except for dark and light brown in its antennae and legs. It has an average length of around 5 mm. The holotype of C. yunnanensis is a male collected in Xima, Yunnan, in 2014.

Taxonomy

The Limnichidae (minute marsh-loving beetle) genus Caccothryptus was first described by David Sharp in 1902. [1] In 2014, the genus was divided into five species groups by Carles Hernando and Ignacio Ribera. Reclassification and reanalysis of Caccothryptus specimens under the new system brought the total number of species to 23, up from a previous total of seven. This classification scheme also divided the genus into a number of subgenera. [1] [2]

In 2018, a distinct form of the C. testudo species group was identified by entomologist Hiroyuki Yoshitomi from specimens collected in southwestern China which displayed novel genital characteristics. This species was named Caccothryptus yunnanensis, after Yunnan, the province where many of the specimens were found. The holotype of the species is a male specimen collected in Xima, Yunnan in 2014 by entomologist Yu-Tang Wang. This is joined by large numbers of paratypes collected by Wang in Xima and other areas of Yunnan, including Ruili, Mengla, Daweishan. Three specimens were also collected in Leishan County, Guizhou. Despite its presence in the C. testudo group, it shares a genetic relation with C. thai. and C. chayuensis due to the shared innovation of minuscule serrae (saw-like indentation) along the lower margin of the median lobe. [3]

Description

C. yunnanensis has an oblong body, with a total length ranging from 3.90–6.05 mm, averaging at 5.04 mm. Its elytral width ranges from 2.00–3.13 mm, with lengths of 3.10–4.85 mm. Its body is shiny and is densely covered with silvery setae of varying lengths. It has short antennae, only about one-eighth the length of the elytra. It is almost uniformly black except for its brown antennae and legs, with two antenna segments and its tarsis a light brown. It exhibits very minor sexual dimorphism. [3] Like other Caccothryptus beetles, it is commonly found in piles of dead, water-logged wood located along forest streams. [4]

It is distinguished from related species through genital characteristics. Its presence in the species group C. testudo through its parameres, which are separated and emarginate. Although related to the C. compactus species C. thai and C. chayuensis due to its median lobe serrae, C. yunnanensis's parameres project straight out, instead of the curves seen on the other two species. Additionally, the notches along the underside of the parameres are V-shaped, unlike the deep U-shaped notches of C. thai. [3] [5] [6]

Colilodion schulzi is a species of beetles belonging to the family Staphylinidae. This small, robust, reddish-brown rove beetle is known from a single specimen, a 2.37 millimetres (0.093 in) long female. It resembles the species C. concinnus and C. inopinatus with its enlarged antennomeres III, but it is easily distinguished by the greater maximum width and less variable width of these appendages, and by other morphological characteristics. Although its ecology is unknown, the presence of trichomes and the knowledge of related species, such as Staphylinidae suggests that this insect is myrmecophilous. The holotype was collected in 2009 in Palawan (Philippines) while sifting plant debris in a coniferous forest. The species was described in 2016 by the coleopterists Zi-Wei Yin from Shanghai Normal University and Giulio Cuccodoro from the Natural History Museum of Geneva, where the type specimen is part of the collection. The taxon's specific denomination is dedicated to the German myrmecologist Andreas Schulz, collector of the specimen.

Aspidytes is a genus of aquatic beetles in the family Aspidytidae, first recorded in 2002 from specimens in South Africa. The genus contains the single species Aspidytes niobe. Originally a second species from China was placed in the same genus but has later been transferred to Sinaspidytes. The aquatic beetle is 6.5 - 7.2 mm long and lives in hygropetric habitats.

Limnichidae, commonly called minute marsh-loving beetles, is a family of beetles belonging to Byrrhoidea. There are at least 30 genera and 350 described species in Limnichidae. They are found worldwide, with the greatest diversity in tropical regions. Most species seem to be associated with water-adjacent habitats, such as riparian and coastal locations, though many species are likely fully terrestrial, with some species being associated with leaf litter and arboreal habitats. Like the other Caccothryptus species described by Matsumoto, it was distinguished from its original classification of C. testudo due to differences in the shape of its genitalia. One specimen collected by Champion was identified as the holotype for C. abboti and named for English radio presenter Nick Abbot.
