Cachet (foaled 21 March 2019) is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. As a two-year-old in 2021 she won only one minor race but showed promising form as she finished second in the Rockfel Stakes, third in the Fillies' Mile and third in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. In the following spring she improved to win the Nell Gwyn Stakes and the 1000 Guineas.

Background

Cachet is a bay filly with a white star and three white socks bred in Ireland by the County Westmeath-based Hyde Park Stud. In September 2020 the yearling was consigned to the Tattersalls Ascot sale but failed to reach her reserve price of 14,000 guineas. [2] In the following April she returned to the Tattersalls sales ring for the Craven Breeze-up sale (in which two-year-olds are publicly galloped before being auctioned) and was bought for 60,000 guineas by the Highclere Agency. [3] She entered the ownership of the Highclere T'Bred Racing - Wild Flower syndicate and was sent into training with George Boughey at the Saffron House Stables in Newmarket, Suffolk.

She was from the first crop of foals sired by Aclaim, who recorded his biggest win when he took the 2017 Prix de la Foret on his final racecourse appearance. [4] Cachet's dam Poyle Sophie showed little racing ability, managing to record one second place finish from six starts. [5] As a descendant of the broodmare Grand Peace, was distantly related to Sagaro, Blue Point and Donjuan Triumphant. [6]

Racing career

2021: two-year-old season

Cachet began her track career in a novice race (for two-year-olds with no more than two previous wins) over six furlongs on good ground on the Rowley course at Newmarket Racecourse on 15 May when she was ridden by Nicola Currie and started at odds of 4/1 in a seven-runner field. She was in contention from the start, took the lead a furlong out, and drew away in the closing stages to win "readily" by five and a half lengths. [7]

Although she failed to win again in 2021, Cachet ran consistently well against high-class opposition. In June she came home fifth in the Group 3 Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot and then ran third when favourite for the Listed Empress Stakes at Newmarket. In the following month she finished third at Ascot behind the colts New Science and Angel Bleu in the Pat Eddery Stakes. She was then sent to France in September and finished seventh in the Prix d'Aumale but produced a much better effort later in the month when she ran second to Hello You in the Group 2 Rockfel Stakes at Ascot. She was then stepped up to the highest class for the Fillies' Mile at Newmarket and finished third behind Inspiral and Prosperous Voyage. For her final run of the season she was sent to the United States and finished fourth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Del Mar on 5 November. [8]

2022: three-year-old season

On her first appearance as a three-year-old Cachet contested the Nell Gwyn Stakes (a trial race for the 1000 Guineas) over seven furlongs at Newmarket on 12 April. Ridden by William Buick she was made the 15/8 favourite, with the best fancied of her seven opponents being her old rival Hello You. Cachet tracked the front-running Flash Betty before taking the lead three furlongs out and "kept on well" in the last quarter mile to win by two and a half lengths from the 28/1 outsider Almohandesah. [9] After the race George Boughey said "I kept saying at the back end of last year that she was slightly weak and she did incredibly well over the winter... She’s obviously a high-class filly and we’ll come back here for the Guineas and give it a good go. The mile is the question mark, but she loves the track here which is a huge string to her bow. All systems go for the Guineas with this filly.” [10]

On 1 May Cachet, with James Doyle in the saddle, started a 16/1 outsider in a thirteen-runner field for the 209th running of the 1000 Guineas over the Rowley Mile. Tenebrism started favourite while the other runners included Hello You, Prosperous Voyage, Sandrine, Discoveries, Tuesday, Wild Beauty (Natalma Stakes) and Zellie (Prix Marcel Boussac). In a change of tactics, Cachet took the lead from the start and was never headed, staying on well under pressure and holding off a strong late challenge from Prosperous Voyage to win by a neck. [11] Doyle, who had won the 2000 Guineas on Coroebus a day earlier said "We knew she kind of wears her heart on her sleeve and knows this track inside out, so I felt as long as we could get those cheap sectionals midway I could be brave and let her use her stride into the Dip. She goes through it so well that it’s almost like she eyes it up from a way out and she really let rip through it, so it was just a case of hoping she’d hang on to the line.” Boughey commented "The question was always going to be whether she stayed. She’s got a really big heart and she’s very straightforward. She’s a Group One winner over a mile now and she can go anywhere in the world, which is massive. The fact that she likes fast ground makes her a global filly which is huge for us and huge for her so it’s very exciting." [12]

Two weeks after winning the 1000 Guineas, Cachet attempted to follow up in the French equivalent, the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches over 1600 metres at Longchamp Racecourse. She again set the pace but was overtaken 400 metres from the finish and despite rallying in the closing stages she was beaten into second place by Mangoustine, beaten a head by the winner. [13] In the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot in June she started the 6/1 second favourite but after putting up her customary front-running effort she faded from contention after being overtaken a furlong out and came home fifth behind Inspiral.

In a racing career which lasted from June 1990 to November 1991 she ran eleven times winning five races and being placed five times. Shadayid was one of the leading two-year-old fillies in Europe in 1990, winning all three of her races including the Group One Prix Marcel Boussac at the Longchamp. After winning the Fred Darling Stakes on her three-year-old debut, Shadayid took her unbeaten run to five by winning the Classic 1000 Guineas at Newmarket. Rockfel British-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Rockfel was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare, best known for winning two Classics in 1938. In a career which lasted from July 1937 until May 1939 she ran thirteen times and won eight races. Rockfel began her career at the lowest level, being beaten in a selling race, but improved to become recognised as one of the best British racemares of the 20th century. In 1938 she was the dominant three-year-old in England, winning the 1000 Guineas over one mile at Newmarket and the Oaks over one and a half miles at Epsom. In the autumn she defeated colts in the Champion Stakes and the Aintree Derby and was retired after winning her only race as a four-year-old. She produced one foal before dying in November 1941.

Musical Bliss (1986–2006) was an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare who won the classic 1000 Guineas in 1989. In a racing career lasting from July 1988 until August 1989, the filly ran five times and won three races. In 1988, Musical Bliss won both her races including the Rockfel Stakes at Newmarket Racecourse. On her first appearance as a three-year-old, she won the 1000 Guineas but ran poorly in her two other races and was retired from racing at the end of the year. Her record as a broodmare was mixed.

One in a Million was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare best known for winning the classic 1000 Guineas in 1979. She won both her races as a two-year-old in impressive style and began her three-year-old season with a five length win in the Nell Gwyn Stakes. She won the 1000 Guineas as a short-priced favourite and was awarded victory in the Coronation Stakes on the disqualification of Buz Kashi. She lost her unbeaten record when finishing unplaced in the July Cup and never raced again. After being retired from racing she had considerable success as a broodmare. She died in 1992.

Polygamy (horse) British-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Polygamy was a British Thoroughbred racehorse, best known for winning the classic Epsom Oaks in 1974. As a two-year-old in 1973, she showed promise by winning three races and finishing fourth in the Critérium des Pouliches. In the following spring she won the 1000 Guineas Trial Stakes and was narrowly beaten in the 1000 Guineas before winning the Oaks. She was retired after being beaten in her only subsequent race and died without producing a foal.

Exclusive was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a juvenile, she won a strongly-contested race on her debut and the finished third in the Fillies' Mile. As a three-year-old in 1998 she finished third in the classic 1000 Guineas before recording her biggest win in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot. After her retirement from racing, she became a very successful broodmare, being the ancestor of major winners including Chic and Integral.

Immortal Verse Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Immortal Verse is an Irish-bred, French-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old she showed promise by winning on her debut and finishing second in the Prix d'Aumale. Her early form in 2011 was disappointing as she was beaten in her first two races and refused to enter the starting stalls in the 1000 Guineas. She then made rapid improvement, winning the Prix de Sandringham and the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot before defeating a strong international field in the Prix Jacques Le Marois. She went on to finish third to Frankel in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes but failed to reproduce her best form in two races as a four-year-old. After her retirement from racing she was sold at auction for 4.7 million guineas setting a European record price for a broodmare.

Maids Causeway is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old in 2004 she won three of her seven races including the Sweet Solera Stakes and Rockfel Stakes as well as being placed in both the May Hill Stakes and the Fillies' Mile. As a three-year-old she finished second in the classic 1000 Guineas and then recorded her biggest win in the Coronation Stakes. At the end of the year she was bought by Sheikh Mohammed and retired from racing to become a broodmare. Her name has always been rendered without an apostrophe, consistently with the street of that name alongside Midsummer Common in Cambridge.

Seazun is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from April 1999 until September 2000 she won two of her ten races. As a two-year-old she was one of the best juvenile fillies of her generation, recording a victory over a strong field in the Cheveley Park Stakes after finishing second in the Sirenia Stakes. She failed to win in the following year but finished second in the Fred Darling Stakes and fourth in both the 1000 Guineas and the Irish 1,000 Guineas. Since her retirement from racing she has had some success as a dam of winners in Japan.

Spinning Queen is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare best known for her emphatic victory over a top-class field in the 2006 Sun Chariot Stakes. As a two-year-old in 2005 she won on her debut and went on to run prominently in several major races, finishing third in the Cherry Hinton Stakes and fourth in both the Albany Stakes and the Prestige Stakes. In the spring of following year she finished second in the Nell Gwyn Stakes and sixth in the 1000 Guineas before running third in the King Charles II Stakes. She showed improved form in the summer, winning the Eternal Stakes and the Brownstown Stakes. In September 2006 she ended her racing career with a nine-length over Soviet Song, Alexander Goldrun and Red Evie in the Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket. Ensconse was an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In 1988 she showed considerable promise as she won a twenty-five runner maiden race and the Blue Seal Stakes in her two racecourse appearances. In the following year she won the Nell Gwyn Stakes and finished fourth when favourite for the 1000 Guineas before recording her biggest success when winning the Irish 1000 Guineas. In her two remaining starts she was unlucky in running when sixth in the Prix de Diane and ran second in the Child Stakes. She was retired from racing at the end of the year to become a broodmare but produced only two foals, neither of whom had any success on the racecourse.

Nicer was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She showed promise as a two-year-old in 1992 although she won only one minor race from five attempts. She reached her peak in the following spring when she won the Masaka Stakes before recording her biggest victory in the Irish 1000 Guineas. She was beaten in her next four races and was then exported to the United States where she failed to win. She was retired to become a broodmare but her foals made very little impact on the racecourse.

Mehthaaf was an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She showed great promise as a two-year-old in 1993, winning on her second racecourse appearance and going on to finish third in both the Lowther Stakes and the Prix Marcel Boussac. As a three-year-old she won the Nell Gwyn Stakes and ran fourth when favourite for the 1000 Guineas before winning the Irish 1,000 Guineas. Later in the season she produced arguably her best performance with an emphatic victory over male opponents in the Celebration Mile. She also ran third in the Coronation Stakes and Prix Jacques Le Marois as well as finishing fourth in the Champion Stakes. After her retirement from racing she had considerable success as a broodmare.

Samitar is a British-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare who raced in four countries and won major races in England, Ireland and the United States. She showed good form as a juvenile in 2011, winning the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot and a valuable sales race at Newmarket Racecourse as well as being placed in the May Hill Stakes and the Fillies' Mile. In the following year she recorded an upset win in the Irish 1,000 Guineas before being sent to race in North America where she won the Garden City Stakes. She remained in training as a four-year-old and won stakes races at Belmont Park and Saratoga.

Roly Poly is an American-bred, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. As a two-year-old in 2016 she won three of her eight races including the Grangecon Stud Stakes and the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes as well as finishing second in the Cheveley Park Stakes and the Lowther Stakes. In the following year she proved herself to be a top-class performer over one mile, recording Group 1 victories in the Falmouth Stakes, Prix Rothschild and Sun Chariot Stakes and running second in both the Irish 1,000 Guineas and the Coronation Stakes.

Valentine Waltz was an Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old she was initially trained in Ireland where she failed to win in four races although she did finish third in the Marble Hill Stakes. Later in the year she was moved to England and improved, winning a minor race and being placed in both the Rockingham Stakes and the Rockfel Stakes. In the following year she developed into one of the best fillies of her generation in Europe, winning the Nell Gwyn Stakes and the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches as well as finishing third in both the 1000 Guineas and the Coronation Stakes. After her retirement from racing she became a broodmare and had modest success as a dam of winners.

Hermosa (horse) Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Hermosa is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse. She showed very good form as a juvenile in 2018 when she won two of her seven races including the Weld Park Stakes as well as finishing second in both the Fillies' Mile and the Critérium International and third in the Moyglare Stud Stakes. She improved in the following spring to record Group 1 victories in the 1000 Guineas and the Irish 1000 Guineas.
