Mawj (foaled 24 April 2020) is a retired Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse. She showed very good form as a juvenile in 2022 when she won the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes and was placed in both the Albany Stakes and the Cheveley Park Stakes. In the following year she won two races in the United Arab Emirates before taking the 1000 Guineas.

Background

Mawj is a small bay filly with a white star and a white coronet on her left forefoot bred in Ireland by her owner, Sheikh Mohammed's Godolphin organisation. Her name is Arabic for "wave". She was sent into training with Saeed bin Suroor who is based in Newmarket in summer but moves to Godolphin's base in Dubai in winter.

She was sired by the Australian horse Exceed and Excel who won the Newmarket Handicap before being exported to become a breeding stallion in Europe. The best of his progeny have included Excelebration, Outstrip, Margot Did and Bivouac. [2] Mawj's dam Modern Ideals showed no racing ability but had previously produced Modern Games and was a half-sister to the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère winner Ultra. [3] She was a great-granddaughter of Konafa who finished second in the 1000 Guineas and was the female-line ancestor of Bosra Sham, Hector Protector and Golden Sixty. [4]

Racing career

2022: two-year-old season

In 2022 Mawj was campaigned exclusively over six furlongs and was ridden in all of her races by Ray Dawson. The filly made her debut in a novice race (for horses with no more than two previous wins) on good to firm ground at Newmarket Racecourse on 14 May and started the 12/1 sixth choice in a twelve-runner field. After being restrained by Dawson in the early stages she moved up to take the lead a furlong from the finish and drew away from her rivals to win by four and a half lengths in "impressive" style. [5] Mawj was immediately stepped up in class and started favourite for the Group 3 Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot in which she finished second of the sixteen runners behind the Aidan O'Brien-trained Meditate a filly who went on to win the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.

The filly was then moved up to Group 2 class for the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes at Newmarket on 8 July and started the 4/1 third favourite in a field of six fillies. She led from the start and despite hanging to the left in the closing stages she "kept on well" to prevail be half a length from the favourite Lezoo. [6] The racecourse stewards held an inquiry into possible interference but the result remained unaltered. Saeed bin Suroor commented "She's a tiny filly, but she's always had class. When she won at Newmarket first time she did so after just one piece of work in her life... We'll keep options open, but all trainers think when they have a small filly they need to make the most of it. She may grow, I hope she does and sometimes fillies change as three-year-olds, but the Cheveley Park will be a nice race for her and then we'll take her to Dubai." [7]

In August Mawj contested the Group 2 Lowther Stakes at York Racecourse and came home fourth of the thirteen runners behind Swingalong. Queen Me and Matilda Picotte. For her final run of the season the filly was stepped up to Group 1 level for the Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket on 24 September. Starting at odds of 10/1 she stayed on well in the closing stages to take third place behind Lezoo and Meditate, beaten one and a half lengths behind the winner. [8]

In the official two-year-old ratings for 2022, Mawj was rated the equal ninth-best juvenile filly of the season in Europe, eight pounds behind the Moyglare Stud Stakes winner Tahiyra. [9]

2023: three-year-old season

For the winter on 2022/3 Mawj was sent to Godolphin's training base in Dubai. She made her seasonal debut in the Jumeirah Fillies Classic over 1400 metres at Meydan Racecourse on 27 January when she was ridden by Pat Cosgrave and started second favourite behind another Godolphin runner Dream of Love. After tracking the leaders, Mawj went to the front 200 metres from the finish and held off a late challenge from Dream of Love to win by a short head. [10] Four weeks later, ridden by Danny Tudhope, Mawj started joint favourite for the Jumeirah Fillies Guineas over 1600 metres at the same track. She took the lead soon after the start and drew away from her opponents in the straight to win in "impressive" style by eight and a half lengths from the Prestige Stakes winner Fairy Cross. [11] After the race Saeed bin Suroor commented "Mawj has plenty of speed, as she showed over six furlongs... Now we will look at the English Guineas or the French Guineas – it will depend on what the boss decides... As a two-year-old, Mawj was tiny and skinny. You would not think she is a lot but every time she worked in the morning she showed some class... She grew a little when she arrived in Dubai and the warm weather helped her. She looks a nice filly for the future". [12]

On her return to Europe, Mawj contested the 210th edition of the 1000 Guineas over the Rowley Mile at Newmarket on 7 May Cachet, when she was partnered by Oisin Murphy and started the 9/1 fifth choice in the betting behind Tahiyra, Meditate, Dream of Love and Remarquee (Fred Darling Stakes). The other fifteen runners included Lezoo, Fairy Cross, Matilda Picotte, Queen Me and Mammas Girl (Nell Gwyn Stakes). Racing down the centre of the wide Newmarket straight, Mawj started well and was among the leaders from the start. In the last furlong the race devolved into a two horse race between Mawj and Tahiyra, and Mawj got the better of a sustained struggle to win by half a length with the pair finishing more than seven lengths clear of the rest. [13] After the race, Murphy, who had recently returned from a 14-month ban from riding commented "It is lovely to see a Classic like that when they go clear and show their class. I was watching Mawj's replays again this morning and was thinking did she really win by eight and a half lengths last time in Meydan, and why did she win so easily? She is clearly just exceptional". [14]

2024: four-year-old season

Mawj was retired after one start in 2024 at Meydan Racecourse where she finished ninth in the Group 1 Jebel Hatta. [15]

She was named European Champion Two-year-old Filly in the Cartier Racing Awards for 1995 and was the highest rated juvenile filly in the International Classification. In her championship season Blue Duster was unbeaten in four races including the Group One Cheveley Park Stakes, the Group Three Princess Margaret Stakes and the Group Three Queen Mary Stakes.

Cape Verdi is a retired, Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse. She was trained in England and Dubai during a racing career which consisted of eight races between May 1997 and July 1999. In 1998 she won the 1000 Guineas by five lengths and was the beaten favourite in The Derby. She was named the European Champion Three-Year-Old Filly at the 1998 Cartier Racing Awards. Cape Verdi was retired after two unsuccessful races as a four-year-old in 1999.

Las Meninas was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from June 1993 to November 1994 she ran eight times and won two races. As a two-year-old she won on her debut and finished second in the Phoenix Stakes at Leopardstown. On her three-year-old debut, Las Meninas defeated Balanchine to win the Classic 1000 Guineas at Newmarket Racecourse becoming the first Irish winner since 1975. She went on to finish second in the Irish 1,000 Guineas at the Curragh but her subsequent form deteriorated and she finished unplaced in her remaining four races. Las Meninas was retired from racing to become a broodmare at the end of her three-year-old season.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Moonshell (horse)</span> Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Moonshell was an Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare best known for winning The Oaks in 1995. In a racing career which lasted from October 1994 to May 1996, the filly ran five times and won two races. After winning her only race as a two-year-old, Moonshell joined the Godolphin Racing team and spent the winter in Dubai. In the spring of 2005, she returned to England to finish third in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket and then won the Classic Oaks over one and a half miles at Epsom. Moonshell did not run again as a three-year-old and was well beaten in two races in 1996 before being retired to stud.

The 2014 1000 Guineas Stakes was a horse race held at Newmarket Racecourse on Sunday 4 May 2014. It was the 201st running of the 1000 Guineas.

Exclusive was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a juvenile, she won a strongly-contested race on her debut and the finished third in the Fillies' Mile. As a three-year-old in 1998 she finished third in the classic 1000 Guineas before recording her biggest win in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot. After her retirement from racing, she became a very successful broodmare, being the ancestor of major winners including Chic and Integral.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Arabian Queen</span> Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Arabian Queen is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. She showed good form as a juvenile, winning two races including the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes. In the following year she won the Princess Elizabeth Stakes but was beaten in her next three starts before recording an upset win over Golden Horn in the International Stakes.

Wannabe Grand was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from May 1998 until November 1999, she won four races and was placed five times from sixteen starts. She was one of the best juvenile fillies in Britain in 1998 when she won the Empress Stakes, Cherry Hinton Stakes and Cheveley Park Stakes as well as finishing second in the Lowther Stakes. In the following year she finished second in the 1000 Guineas on her seasonal debut and went on to win the Flying Fillies' Stakes, as well as being placed in the Coronation Stakes, Oak Tree Stakes and Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes. She was retired from racing to become a broodmare and produced at least seven winners.

Seazun is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from April 1999 until September 2000 she won two of her ten races. As a two-year-old she was one of the best juvenile fillies of her generation, recording a victory over a strong field in the Cheveley Park Stakes after finishing second in the Sirenia Stakes. She failed to win in the following year but finished second in the Fred Darling Stakes and fourth in both the 1000 Guineas and the Irish 1,000 Guineas. Since her retirement from racing she has had some success as a dam of winners in Japan.

Carry On Katie is an American-bred British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She was undefeated in three races as a juvenile in 2003 when she was one of the best two-year-old fillies of her generation in Britain. After winning by twelve lengths on her debut she won the Group Two Lowther Stakes and the Group One Cheveley Park Stakes. After being transferred to the ownership of Godolphin Racing for the 2004 season, she was well-beaten in the 1000 Guineas and the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches, and was retired from racing. She has made no impact as a broodmare.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Hooray (horse)</span> British Thoroughbred racehorse

Hooray is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. Bred and owned by the Cheveley Park Stud she won five of her thirteen races in a racing career which lasted from June 2010 until October 2011. In 2010 she was rated the best filly of her age in Europe when she won the Lowther Stakes, the Sirenia Stakes and the Cheveley Park Stakes. She was not so successful as a three-year-old, recording her only success in the Surrey Stakes. At the end of the year she returned to Cheveley Park to become a broodmare and produced her first foal in 2013.

White Moonstone is an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from July until October 2010 she was undefeated in four races of increasing importance. After winning a maiden race on her debut she won the Group Three Sweet Solera Stakes, the Group Two May Hill Stakes and the Group One Fillies' Mile. She suffered training problems in the early part of the following year and was retired without racing again. She has produced at least one foal.

Lumiere is a British Thoroughbred racehorse. She was one of the best British two-year-old fillies of 2015 when she ran second in the Lowther Stakes before winning the Cheveley Park Stakes. Her only win in the following year came in the Sir Henry Cecil Stakes but she was placed in both the Sceptre Stakes and the Challenge Stakes.

Zahrat Dubai is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. After running unplaced in her only race as a juvenile she wintered in Dubai and returned to Britain to record an impressive victory in the Musidora Stakes. She finished third when favourite for The Oaks but then defeated a strong field in the Nassau Stakes. She failed to reproduce her best form in two subsequent races and was retired at the end of the year. Zahrat Dubai became a broodmare and produced two winners from eleven foals.

Roly Poly is an American-bred, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. As a two-year-old in 2016 she won three of her eight races including the Grangecon Stud Stakes and the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes as well as finishing second in the Cheveley Park Stakes and the Lowther Stakes. In the following year she proved herself to be a top-class performer over one mile, recording Group 1 victories in the Falmouth Stakes, Prix Rothschild and Sun Chariot Stakes and running second in both the Irish 1,000 Guineas and the Coronation Stakes.

Royal Marine is an Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse. As a two-year-old in 2018 he was one of the best colts of his generation in Europe, winning two of his three races including the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère. He failed to reproduce his juvenile form in 2019 and was gelded. He ran five times in 2020 without success.

Alcohol Free is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. She was one of the best juvenile fillies in Europe in 2020 when she won two of her three races including the Cheveley Park Stakes. She improved as a three-year-old, winning the Fred Darling Stakes, Coronation Stakes and Sussex Stakes. As a four-year-old in 2022 she was dropped back to sprint distances and added a further Group One success when winning the July Cup.

Naval Crown is a British Thoroughbred racehorse. As a juvenile in 2020 he won only one of his five races but was placed three times in high-class races. In the following year he won the Listed Meydan Classic in Dubai as well as running fourth in the 2000 Guineas and second in the Jersey Stakes. As a four-year-old he won the Al Fahidi Fort in Dubai and recorded a Group 1 Platinum Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.
