Canada officially recognized Montenegro on June 13, 2006. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on September 5, 2006.
Since May 3, 2011, ambassador of Montenegro Srđan Darmanović has received accreditation to the assumption of the extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador to Canada, and is headquartered in Washington, D.C.. The first non-resident Ambassador of Montenegro in Canada, with headquarters in Washington, was Miodrag Vlahović in office from 2007 to 2010.
Roman Vashchuk, the current Canadian Ambassador to Montenegro on non-residential basis with headquarters in Belgrade, handed the credentials to the President of Montenegro, Mr. Filip Vujanovic October 6, 2011. [1] Both countries are full members of NATO.
The most important Canadian investor in Montenegro is Peter Munk, whose company, in Tivat, builds the largest luxury yacht marina on the eastern Adriatic coast - Porto Montenegro. The first part of the Marine opened June 17, 2009. with a capacity of 85 berths for yachts from 12 to 100 meters, and in mid-August 2010 opened the first residential-commercial building Teuta, as part of a new marina. This project is in the fourth year of business success is achieved, which is a positive momentum to attract other foreign investors in Montenegro.
In April 2012, the Canadian company "Molson Coors" has become the new owner of the Niksic brewery "Trebjesa".
On December 8, 2008, as part of the process of accession to the World Trade Organization, Montenegro signed a bilateral trade agreement with Canada.

2011: a total of €1,275,211.00 (€1,219,896.28 import to Montenegro, and export to Canada €55,315.00);
Direct investments from Canada in 2012 amounted to €950,929.23;
Direct investments from Canada in 2011 amounted to €1,175,307.94.
Montenegro mostly imports from Canada: ships, boats; boilers; pharmaceutical products, vegetables, roots, tubers. Moreover, Montenegro exports mostly to Canada: a variety of products for nutrition, vegetables; objects of art, collectors' pieces and antiques; electrical machines and equipment. [2]
Montenegro also participates in Department of National Defence's Military Training and Cooperation Program (MTCP). The MTCP is administered by the Department of National Defence to train officers from participating countries in the areas of language proficiency (English and French), peace support operations, staff duties and professional development. Since 2007, 40 Montenegrin candidates have been trained through MTCP. For 2014–2015, four training spots were offered to Montenegro. [3]
There is cooperation between Munk School of Global Affairs and University of Donja Gorica, in the form of student exchange, study trips and the like.
In the area of scientific and technological cooperation Montenegro is particularly interested in using a number of Canadian scholarships, especially the National Council for Research of Canada, who has developed cooperation around the world. It is present through the offices that Canada has opened in the former Yugoslav republics.
Students of undergraduate studies, graduate students and professors of the Faculty of Tourism and Hotel Management from Kotor had the opportunity to exchange with colleagues from Ryerson University in Toronto.
Agreement on cooperation between the University of Montenegro and the University of Ottawa was signed on April 13, 2006. [4]
In a referendum on 21 May 2006, the people of Montenegro opted to leave the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro. This result was confirmed with a declaration of independence by the Montenegrin parliament on 3 June 2006. It simultaneously requested international recognition and outlined foreign policy goals.

Montenegro–Ukraine relations relate to bilateral relations between Montenegro and Ukraine. Formal relations began on 15 June 2006 when Ukraine recognized Montenegro, less than two weeks after the Parliament of Montenegro declared the independence of Montenegro from Serbia. Both countries established diplomatic relations on 22 August 2006. Montenegro has an embassy in Kyiv. Ukraine has an embassy in Podgorica. Although economic ties are weak, Montenegro is a transit point for human trafficking between Ukraine and the rest of Europe. Montenegro is a member of NATO, which Ukraine applied for in 2022. Ukraine is a member of the BSCE, with Montenegro being a sectoral dialogue partner.
China–Montenegro relations are foreign relations between the People's Republic of China and Montenegro. People's Republic of China has officially recognized Montenegro on June 14, 2006. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on July 7, 2006. China transformed its consulate into an embassy in Podgorica on July 7, 2006. The Montenegrin embassy in China opened in Beijing on November 13, 2007.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia is the ministry in the government of Serbia which is in the charge of maintaining the consular affairs and foreign relations of Serbia. The current minister is Marko Đurić, in office since 26 October 2022.
Iceland–India relations are the bilateral relations between Iceland and India. Historically, these relations have been friendly but lacked substantive content. Iceland and India established diplomatic relations in 1972. At that time the embassy of Iceland in London, United Kingdom was accredited to India and the embassy of India in Oslo, Norway, was accredited to Iceland. Canada and Greece first exchanged ambassadors in 1942. Both countries are members of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, Organisation internationale de la Francophonie, Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, NATO and the United Nations. There is a strong Greek community living in Canada.
Japan–Montenegro relations refers to the bilateral relationship between Japan and Montenegro. Japan recognised Montenegro on 16 June 2006, stating then that "the policy of the Government of Japan [is] to attach importance to the peace and stability of Western Balkans countries including Montenegro".
Montenegro–Turkey relations are the bilateral relations between Montenegro and Turkey. Turkey officially recognized Montenegro on June 12, 2006. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on July 3, 2006. Both countries are full members of the Union for the Mediterranean, Council of Europe and NATO. And Montenegro is with Slovenia is Sectoral dialogue partner countries of Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation.
Honduras–India relations refers to the international relations that exist between Honduras and India. The Ambassador of India in Guatemala City is concurrently accredited to Honduras. India also maintains an Honorary Consul General in Tegucigalpa. Honduras is accredited to India from its embassy in Kuwait City.
The diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Montenegro established in 2008 after Azerbaijan recognized the independence of Montenegro. Azerbaijan has a Diplomatic Office in Podgorica. Montenegro has an embassy in Baku.
Montenegro–Spain relations are the bilateral and diplomatic relations between these two countries. Both countries are full members of the Council of Europe, and of the NATO. Montenegro has an embassy in Madrid. Spain is accredited to Montenegro from its embassy in Belgrade, Serbia. Montenegro is a European Union candidate and Spain is a European Union member state.
Kenya–Spain relations are the bilateral and diplomatic relations between these two countries. Kenya has an embassy in Madrid. Spain has an embassy in Nairobi and an honorary consulate in Mombasa.
The Embassy of Ukraine in Belgrade is a diplomatic mission of Ukraine in Serbia, located in the capital city Belgrade.
