Vieques, officially Isla de Vieques, is an island and municipality of Puerto Rico, in the northeastern Caribbean, part of an island grouping sometimes known as the Spanish Virgin Islands. Vieques is part of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and retains strong influences from 400 years of Spanish presence in the island.
Isla Culebra is an island, town and municipality of Puerto Rico and geographically part of the Spanish Virgin Islands. It is located approximately 17 miles (27 km) east of the Puerto Rican mainland, 12 miles (19 km) west of St. Thomas and 9 miles (14 km) north of Vieques. Culebra is spread over 5 barrios and Culebra Pueblo (Dewey), the main town and the administrative center of the island. Residents of the island are known as culebrenses. With a population of 1,792 as of the 2020 Census, it is Puerto Rico's least populous municipality.
Humacao is a city and municipality in Puerto Rico located in the eastern coast of the island, north of Yabucoa; south of Naguabo; east of Las Piedras; and west of Vieques Passage. Humacao is spread over 12 barrios and Humacao Pueblo. It is part of the San Juan-Caguas-Guaynabo Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Tourism in Puerto Rico attracted 3.7 million visitors in 2019 and 1.0 million visitors in 2015, a notable increase from the average of 2010–2014 at 3.1 million. Tourism has been a very important source of revenue for Puerto Rico for a number of decades given it is host to diverse natural wonders, cultural and historical buildings, concerts and sporting events. Visitors from the United States do not need a passport to enter Puerto Rico and the ease of travel attracts many tourists from the mainland United States each year.
Mona is the third-largest island of the Puerto Rican archipelago, after the main island of Puerto Rico and Vieques. It is the largest of three islands in the Mona Passage, a strait between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, the others being Monito Island and Desecheo Island. It measures about 7 miles by 4 miles, and lies 41 mi (66 km) west of Puerto Rico, of which it is administratively a part. It is one of two islands that make up the Isla de Mona e Islote Monito barrio in the municipality of Mayagüez.
Black sand is sand that is black in color. One type of black sand is a heavy, glossy, partly magnetic mixture of usually fine sands containing minerals such as magnetite, found as part of a placer deposit. Another type of black sand, found on beaches near a volcano, consists of tiny fragments of basalt.
Luquillo is a town and municipality of Puerto Rico located in the northeast coast, northwest of Fajardo; and east of Rio Grande. Luquillo is spread over 5 barrios and Luquillo Pueblo. It lends its name to the Sierra de Luquillo, where El Yunque National Forest is located. It is part of the Fajardo Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Puerto Escondido is a small port and tourist center in the municipality of San Pedro Mixtepec Distrito 22 in the Mexican state of Oaxaca. Prior to the 1930s, there was no town. The bay had been used as a port intermittently to ship coffee, but there was no permanent settlement due to the lack of potable water. The name "Puerto Escondido" had roots in the legend of a woman who escaped her captors and hid here. The Nahuatl word for this area was Zicatela, meaning “place of large thorns". Today, it refers to the area's most famous beach.
Mismaloya comes from Nahuatl: [michmaloyan] "place where they grab fish with their hands" is a small village, located on the coast of the Bahía de Banderas in the Mexican state of Jalisco [Xalixco] "on the surface of the sand". Mismaloya lies on Highway 200, south of Puerto Vallarta.
Playa Zipolite is a beach community located in San Pedro Pochutla municipality on the southern coast of Oaxaca state in Mexico between Huatulco and Puerto Escondido.
Higuerote is the capital city of Brión Municipality, located in the coastal region of Barlovento, in the state of Miranda, Venezuela, approximately an hour and a half from Caracas.
WIVV is a radio station broadcasting a Religious format. Licensed to Vieques, Puerto Rico, it serves part of Puerto Rico, large areas of the US Virgin Islands, the British Virgin Islands, and the Lesser Antilles. WIVV was the first-ever full-time Christian radio station in the Caribbean. It is currently owned by Calvary Evangelistic Mission, Inc. and features programming from Salem Radio Network.
Jobos Beach or Playa Jobos is a beach facing the Atlantic Ocean located on the PR-466 street of Isabela in the northwest of Puerto Rico. While popular, the beach is dangerous and signs warning tourists of dangerous currents were installed in early 2021.
Buyé Beach is a beach in southwestern Puerto Rico, in the municipality of Cabo Rojo. The beach is popular with locals due to its soft, light beige-colored sand, its calm waters, and its relaxed and secluded, yet family-friendly, atmosphere. It is located next to the small Buyé Resort which offers parking, food kiosks and restrooms for visitors to the beach.
Mar Bella Beach, colloquially known as Puerto Nuevo Beach, is a beach in the municipality of Vega Baja in the north coast of Puerto Rico. The beach is often referred to as Puerto Nuevo Beach because it is located in the Puerto Nuevo barrio of Vega Baja; it is also referred to as the Balneario de Vega Baja or Balneario de Puerto Nuevo. The beach is located approximately 45 minutes west of San Juan, making it popular with both locals and visitors.
Blue Beach, better known as La Chiva Beach, is a popular beach on the southern coast of Vieques in barrio Puerto Ferro. The beach is considered one of the best in both Vieques and Puerto Rico for its breathtaking scenery, its soft sand and crystal clear water, ideal for swimming and snorkeling. The beach is known as La Chiva Beach by locals, and its English name originated as a nickname that was given to it by members of the US Navy. The area was formerly used by the Navy but it has been declared safe for visitors; however, beachgoers are prohibited from entering La Chiva Key due to the risk of unexploded ordnance. The beach was closed for a time after the destruction caused by Hurricane Irma in 2017 but it reopened the next year.
Esperanza Beach is a popular beach on the southern coast of Vieques in La Esperanza, Puerto Real. In comparison to other beaches in the island which are located far away from populated areas, this beach is located close to La Esperanza and it hosts a number of hotels, restaurants, food kiosks and stores. Esperanza Pier, located on the western part of the beach, is considered a landmark of Vieques. It is a very popular weekend destination for locals and visitors alike. The beach is located between Sun Bay Beach and Black Sand Beach and both can be reached by foot from La Esperanza.
Ocean Park Beach is a large public-access beach located in Ocean Park, a neighborhood of the barrio (district) of Santurce in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The beach used to be known as Último Trolley Beach, since it was the site of the San Juan–Condado streetcar line terminal. A small section located closed to Dr. José Celso Barbosa Park is still referred to as El Último Trolley.
