Carl Whiting

Carl (Tiny) Whiting, born 1981 in Auckland (previously known as Carl Williams), [1] [2] is a New Zealand sailor who has competed at the Summer Olympics and in multiple America's Cups.

His mother is well-known sailing tutor Penny Whiting. [3] Between 1995 and 1998 Whiting was part of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron youth training scheme. [4]

Whiting joined Team New Zealand as a trainee and reserve at age 16. [5] He then sailed with Team New Zealand in their unsuccessful 2003 America's Cup before joining Oracle Racing for the 2007 Louis Vuitton Cup and 2010 America's Cup campaign. [6] [7] [8]

Whiting teamed up with Hamish Pepper in the Star class and together they won the 2006 Star World Championships and represented New Zealand at the 2008 Summer Olympics, finishing ninth. [9] [10]

In 2009 he took up cycling and entered a team into the Tour of Southland while also working with Artemis Racing in the TP52 class. [11]

Whiting launched and managed Pure Black Racing, New Zealand's first international professional road cycling team, from 2010 to 2013. The team raced in USA, Canada, Singapore, New Zealand and Australia in 2011 and '12, including competing in the 2012 UCI Asia Tour. [12] [13]

Whiting won first place in the blue belt, Master 1, ultra-heavy category at the World Master Brazilian jiu-jitsu 2014 Championship in California. [14]

In 2020, Whiting and his wife Jasmine purchased the 55 ft yacht Emotional Rescue, which was the first monohull boat to win the PIC Coastal Classic in 1989. [15] Their family-run business, Whiting Sailing, offers private charters, private sailing lessons and learn-to-sail courses in Auckland. [16]

The Louis Vuitton Pacific Series was a match race regatta in America's Cup Class yachts in Auckland, New Zealand, during January and February 2009. Racing started on 30 January. The Louis Vuitton Pacific Series was organised in association with the New Zealand Government, Emirates Team New Zealand, the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, Auckland City and Skycity Entertainment Group. Bruno Troublé was Louis Vuitton's organizer and spokesperson for the Series.

The 5th Louis Vuitton Cup was held in Auckland, New Zealand, in 2000. The winner, Prada Challenge, went on to challenge for the 2000 America's Cup. It was the first time in the competition's history that there would not be an American challenger or defender.

The Louis Vuitton Trophy Auckland was the second in a scheduled series of regattas that compete for the Louis Vuitton Trophy. The regatta was held in Auckland between 7–21 March 2010. The Louis Vuitton Trophy format uses existing International America's Cup Class yachts loaned to the regatta by various America's Cup racing syndicates, keeping costs low for the competing teams.

The America's Cup World Series are match races and fleet regattas used as heats for the 2013 America's Cup and the 2017 America's Cup.

The 2021 America's Cup in March 2021 was the 36th staging of the America's Cup yacht race. It was contested on the inner Hauraki Gulf off Auckland, New Zealand, between the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron and Circolo della Vela Sicilia of Italy. The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron's boat was Te Rehutai owned and sailed by the Emirates Team New Zealand syndicate. Circolo della Vela Sicilia's boat was Luna Rossa, owned and sailed by the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli syndicate. Both boats are AC75 class high-performance foiling monohulls, a class designed specifically for this competition. The Cup was won by Team New Zealand, 7–3.

The AC75 is a racing yacht used in the 2021 America's Cup and 37th America's Cup matches and planned to be used for the 38th America's Cup match. The 23 m (75 ft) monohulls feature wing-like sailing hydrofoils mounted under the hull, a soft wingsail, and no keel.

Te Rehutai is the AC75 foiling monohull yacht that Emirates Team New Zealand used to successfully defend the America's Cup for the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron in March 2021. It beat the winner of the 2021 Prada Cup, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, representing Circolo della Vela Sicilia of Italy, 7–3 in a first to seven series raced from 10 to 17 March 2021. Both the Prada Cup and the America's Cup were held in Auckland, New Zealand, after Emirates Team New Zealand regained the Cup for the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron in 2017, beating Oracle Team USA, representing the Golden Gate Yacht Club, 7–1 in Bermuda.
