Carolina Crusher is a monster truck in the Feld Entertainment Monster Jam series. [1] The first version of Carolina Crusher was built in 1985 by Gary Porter. Gary Porter and Carolina Crusher was one of the most popular monster trucks of the 1980s and 1990s. In the Fall of 2014, it was announced that Gary Porter would be returning to the Carolina Crusher in the Monster Jam series to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the truck in 2015. [2] [3]

History

Gary Porter's brother owned a four-wheel drive shop in Wadesboro, North Carolina and Porter was always interested in four-wheel drives. [4] Porter saw his first monster truck show in 1982 in Indianapolis, Indiana. In 1985, Porter built the first Carolina Crusher monster truck for $11,000. [5] Carolina Crusher was initially used to help advertise for his brother's four-wheel drive shop with the hope to compete in monster truck shows. [6] Porter and Carolina Crusher's first professional appearance occurred at the Spare Time 4x4 Center in Greensboro, North Carolina. [7]

In 1988, Carolina Crusher debuted on the TNT Monster Truck Challenge, the first official monster truck points series. [8] Carolina Crusher finished fourth in the 1988 standings. [9] In 1989, Carolina Crusher finished second in the standings, behind Equalizer. [10]

The PENDA Points Series was established in 1991 and became the premiere monster truck racing circuit. In the inaugural season of the PENDA Points Series, Carolina Crusher won the points championship. [11] Carolina Crusher competed in the PENDA Points Series until its dissolution after the 1997 season.

In 1993, Carolina Crusher was a regular on the television series “Monster Wars”. Gary Porter finished third in the points standings and won two televised races. Its representing mascot character was an overweight construction worker with a jackhammer.

In 1999, Gary Porter sold Carolina Crusher to Paul Shafer, creator of the Monster Patrol monster truck. [12] Porter moved on to sign with Pace Motorsports (now Feld Entertainment Motorsports) to drive Grave Digger on the Monster Jam series.

Carolina Crusher, driven by Michael Harper, won the 2004 and 2005 Checkered Flag Productions – Monster Truck Winter Nationals. In 2005, Carolina Crusher, driven by James Tigue II, won the Paul Shafer Motorsports World Finals in Freestyle. [13]

In the 2010s, Carolina Crusher was converted to a ride truck. [14]

Carolina Crusher has been featured in several video games, including, Monster Truck Wars on Gameboy, Monster Truck Madness, Monster Truck Madness 2, Monster Truck Madness 64, and Monster Truck Destruction. Many Carolina Crusher toys have been produced since the late 1980s, including Micro Machines, Muscle Machines, and Hot Wheels.

Present

Feld Entertainment leased the rights for Carolina Crusher from Paul Shafer in 2014. After the end of a promotional agreement between Monster Jam and Marvel Comics, the Captain America monster truck was rebranded as Carolina Crusher. Gary Porter, a driver for Monster Jam since 2001, would be returning to Carolina Crusher's driver seat in 2015. [15] [16]

At the 2016 Monster Jam World Finals XVII, Carolina Crusher and Porter won the 2016 Arena Wheelie of the Year award. [17]

Gary Porter was the 12th inductee in the International Monster Truck Hall of Fame In 2013.

Gary Porter and Mike Wales were inducted into the Monster Jam Hall of Fame during a show at NRG Stadium on October 23, 2021. [18]

Blue Thunder is a monster truck that races in the USHRA Monster Jam series. It was originally sponsored by the truck division of Ford Motor Company and Live Nation. The truck has several similarities with the monster truck Bigfoot. Some fans saw Blue Thunder as a replacement for Bigfoot in the Monster Jam series. The truck has been moderately successful and won several major events during its existence. However, it has not yet won a championship. Blue Thunder was used by Ford Motor Company for promotional purposes along with competition. The truck is currently driven by Todd LeDuc. The truck did not compete in 2012 when Todd LeDuc moved to Metal Mulisha after driving Blue Thunder in 2011, but as of 2022, he began driving Blue Thunder again due to the Monster Energy truck not operating anymore. With Ford dropping its sponsorship in 2012, the truck was redesigned and brought back in 2013 with veteran driver Dan Evans; former owner/driver of the Destroyer monster truck.

Gary Porter is an American former monster-truck driver that races on the United States Hot Rod Association circuit. He is a former member of the Grave Digger team but returned to his Carolina Crusher truck in 2015. In July 2017, Gary Porter retired from monster truck driving after spending 32 years in the sport. In 2013 he was inducted in the international monster truck hall of fame. He was inducted again in 2021 in the Monster Jam Hall Of Fame.

TNT Motorsports was a popular promoter of monster truck races, tractor pulls, and occasionally mud racing in the 1980s. TNT was an acronym for “Trucks n Tractors” founded by the late Billy Joe Miles of Owensboro, Kentucky. Events were shown on Powertrax on ESPN, Trucks and Tractor Power on TNN, and the syndicated Tuff Trax. In 1988, TNT produced 77 shows that it estimated drew 1 million fans. In 1989, the company had $12 million in revenue.

The International Monster Truck Hall of Fame, based in Auburn, Indiana, is a shrine to the best drivers in history of monster truck competition. The hall is part of the Kruse Automotive and Carriage Museum.

Lucas Oil Crusader was a monster truck that raced in the Monster Jam professional monster truck racing series. It was driven by Linsey Weenk, former Blue Thunder driver, who debuted in 2011 in Houston, Texas. It featured one of the first trucks to change its roof artwork, which is the medieval knight decal and the truck's logo, and then after a while, it was replaced with the Lucas Oil logo. It also had the Lucas Oil flags at the back of the truck. It was sponsored by Lucas Oil since its debut in Houston, Texas, 2011. The truck was supposedly retired on July 28, 2019, but returned in 2020 to compete in Stadium Championship Series Red.

Ryan Anderson is an American professional monster truck driver. He currently drives Son-Uva Digger on the Monster Jam circuit. A second-generation monster truck driver, Ryan is the son of Grave Digger creator Dennis Anderson and the younger brother of fellow driver Adam, and the older brother of Krysten and Weston Anderson. He is a four-time Monster Jam World Champion. Ryan currently resides in his hometown of Poplar Branch, North Carolina.
