Castle Market was an indoor market in Sheffield city centre, England. [1] The building lay in the north-east of the present city centre, by the River Don, and was built on top of the remains of Sheffield Castle, which could still be seen via guided tours. The market closed in 2013 when the Moor Market opened on The Moor, [2] further south in Sheffield city centre, and demolition began in 2015.
The oldest part of the building was the Fish and Vegetable Market, constructed in the inter-war period. The remainder of the building was constructed by J. Stuart Mackie and Andrew Derbyshire under the auspices of J. L. Womersley between 1960 and 1965. It had two main floors, both of which included small shops and stalls, and each accessible from street level.
Other stores faced on to the surrounding streets, while a gallery one, floor above the main part of the market, contained several more shops, and access to an office building surmounting the structure. The gallery was linked by bridges across Exchange Street to further above-ground shopping areas.
The whole Castle markets area has been the subject of redevelopment proposals since the 1980s, with part of the adjacent area being redeveloped with a hotel, multi-storey car park and several new office blocks in a development known as "The Square" by Carillion. The original scheme to replace the markets fell victim to the 1990s recession. A new markets building opened on The Moor in 2013, which is a partnership between the council and private developers. The multi-storey car park for the Moor Market scheme has been built on Eyre Street.
Part of the council's current plans for the Castle Market was to demolish the existing complex and open up a pedestrian route from the city centre to the Victoria Docks area and the new Riverside Quarter, now that the ring road has been diverted. [3]
The Bull Ring is a major shopping area in central Birmingham England, and has been an important feature of Birmingham since the Middle Ages, when its market was first held. Two shopping centres have been built in the area; in the 1960s, and then in 2003; the latter is styled as one word, Bullring. When coupled with Grand Central it forms the United Kingdom's largest city centre based shopping centre, styled as Bullring & Grand Central.
Park Hill is a housing estate in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. It was built between 1957 and 1961, and in 1998 was given Grade II* listed building status. Following a period of decline, the estate is being renovated by developers Urban Splash into a mostly private mixed-tenure estate made up of homes for market rent, private sale, shared ownership, and student housing while around a quarter of the units in the development will be social housing. The renovation was shortlisted for both the 2013 and 2024 RIBA Stirling Prize, for the first and second phases of the redevelopment respectively. The Estate falls within the Manor Castle ward of the City. Park Hill is also the name of the area in which the flats are sited. The name relates to the deer park attached to Sheffield Manor Lodge, the remnant of which is now known as Norfolk Park.

Broadmarsh is an historic area of Nottingham, England. The area was subjected to large scale slum clearance, creating large spaces used for regeneration. A shopping centre, car park, bus station and road complex created in the early 1970s cut-through the traditional thoroughfares from the city centre to the rail and canalside area. A large courts building was opened in 1981.

Martineau Galleries is a proposed mixed-use development for Birmingham, England which was shelved in 2009 but re-approved in 2020. It was to connect the Eastside to the city centre core, a major retail area.
Heart of the City II is a mixed-use development under construction in Sheffield city centre, England between the Devonshire Quarter and The Moor Gateway. The project was previously given the marketing name Sevenstone, prior to Hammerson, the developer, being dropped from the project in December 2013 with Sheffield City Council seeking new developers.
The Castlegate Quarter is one of the eleven quarters of Sheffield city centre. It is named after Castlegate, the quarter's main thoroughfare. The boundaries of the Castlegate Quarter are formed by Castlegate and the River Don to the north, Exchange Place to the east, Commercial Street and part of the High Street to the south, and Angel Street and Snig Hill to the west. For the latter part of the 20th century, the Castlegate Quarter was dominated by Castle Market, a large indoor market building. Following the demolition of Castle Market in 2015, the quarter is now undergoing regeneration as of 2020.

The 1950s and 1960s saw the construction of numerous brutalist apartment blocks in Sheffield, England. The Sheffield City Council had been clearing inner-city residential slums since the early 1900s. Prior to the 1950s these slums were replaced with low-rise council housing, mostly constructed in new estates on the edge of the city. By the mid-1950s the establishment of a green belt had led to a shortage of available land on the edges of the city, whilst the government increased subsidies for the construction of high-rise apartment towers on former slum land, so the council began to construct high-rise inner city estates, adopting modernist designs and industrialised construction techniques, culminating in the construction of the award-winning Gleadless Valley and Park Hill estates.

Arundel Gate is one of the main thoroughfares in Sheffield, England. It is located in the Heart of the City area of Sheffield City Centre. Arundel Gate also features a fifteen-stand bus station, including a ticket office building, completed in 2005.
Code Sheffield is an under-construction skyscraper located at the junction of Wellington Street and Rockingham Street in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. Construction commenced in March 2022 as part of the Heart of the City 2 redevelopment of this area of the city centre. With an originally planned height of 117 metres (384 ft) once completed, Code Sheffield would have overtaken both the St Paul's Tower as the tallest building in Sheffield and Altus House in Leeds as the tallest building in Yorkshire. However, due to rising costs the planned height of the building was reduced from 38 to 26 storeys.
Kings Tower is an approved skyscraper that will be located on Castle Square at the junction of High Street and Angel Street in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. With a planned height of 120 m (390 ft) once completed, Kings Tower will overtake Code Sheffield, and St Pauls Tower as the tallest building in Sheffield and in Yorkshire. Plans for the tower were submitted by architects Hodder + Partners in September 2020, calling initially for a 39-storey tower. Planning permission was granted in December 2020, and construction is planned to complete in 2023. Amended plans were submitted in late 2022, adding a 40th floor to the project.
