Castletownbere GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in Castletownbere in Cork, Ireland. Its Gaelic Football team participates in competitions organized by Cork GAA, and is a member of Beara division. The club, like the other Beara clubs, does nor field a hurling team.

History

The Castletownbere GAA Club like most of the GAA Clubs in Beara was officially affiliated to the GAA in 1927, when the divisional system was established. Gaelic Football was however played for many years prior to 1927 in Castletownbere and there were various teams throughout the parish. There was a team from the Town called The Magpies who wore Black and White jerseys. These were the colours adopted by the club when it affiliated in 1927. The colours did change to green and subsequently blue but have long since returned to the traditional Black and White. The club had to wait until 1942 to contest its first Beara Championship final and a further five years until 1947 to win the Beara Title for the first time. Between 1947 and 1976 the club won nine Divisional Championships. In 1963, 1964, and 1965 a second team from the parish Rosmacowen entered the Beara Championship. The two teams met in the Beara Championship in 1965 with the Castletownbere team winning. Between 1966 and 1970 Rosmacowen formed a team with Bere Island called St Brendan's. In 1974 Castletownbere club contested its first Cork Junior Football Championship Final when a team captained by Donal Holland lost by 1-7 0-8 to Fermoy. This was repeated in 1976 when Castlehaven defeated a team captained by Ger Batt O Sullivan by 3-7 to 0-6 in the County Final. 1977 proved to be a historical year for the club when on the occasion of its 50th anniversary a team captained by Seanie O Sullivan won the club's tenth Beara Championship and first County Championship. Rockchapel were defeated in the county final at Macroom on a score line of 3-5 to 0-8. In 1978 Castletownbere entered the Intermediate ranks and played at this level until 1986 when they won the Cork Intermediate Football Championship. Once again, the venue was Macroom, as the club beat Kilshannig by 1-8 to 0-7. The 1987 season saw Castletownbere compete at senior level for the first time when they defeated Carrigdhoun by 4-11 to 0-5 in the first round of the championship. They were eventually beaten at the quarter-final stage by the reigning County Champions Imokilly. The club again played in the senior championship in 1988 before returning to the intermediate grade in 1989. The club contested five County Intermediate finals in 1990, 1997, 1999, 2006 and 2011 but it was only in 2012 that they would finally win the intermediate championship. Captained by Alan O Regan, Castletownbere defeated Éire Óg on a scoreline of 1-12 to 0-13.

The club is affiliated with Cork GAA county board and the Muskerry GAA divisional board. Beara GAA is a division of Cork GAA, and is responsible for organizing Gaelic Athletic Association games in the Beara Peninsula in County Cork, Ireland. It is one of eight divisions of Cork County Board. It organizes competitions for the clubs within the division, from Under 12 up to the adult level. The winners of these competitions compete against other divisional champions to determine which club is the county champion. Currently, the following clubs are part of the Beara division - Castletownbere, Adrigole, Urhan, Garnish, Bere Island and Glengarriff. It has no senior football team so the only representative in the Cork Senior Football Championship is the divisional team. The division also competes in the Cork Minor Football Championship and the Cork Under-21 Football Championship. Beara is a Gaelic football stronghold, with very little hurling played, and no competitions organized.

Muskerry GAA is a Gaelic football and hurling division located in the middle region of County Cork, Ireland. It is one of eight divisions of Cork GAA County Board. The division includes clubs from areas to the west of Cork city stretching to the county bounds with Kerry. Its name is derived from the ancient Gaelic kingdom of Múscraige which, following the Norman conquest, now encompasses the baronies of Muskerry West and Muskerry East. These baronies, or half-baronies, include towns such as Macroom, Ballincollig, and Ballingeary. Muskerry GAA is bordered by Carrigdhoun GAA and Carbery GAA divisions to the south and by Duhallow GAA to the north. It organizes competitions for the clubs within the division, from "Under 12" up to the adult level. The winners of these competitions compete against other divisional champions to determine which club is the county champion. In addition, the division selects football and hurling teams from the adult teams playing at junior level or county intermediate level; these then compete for the Cork Senior Football Championship and Cork Senior Hurling Championship.

Rockchapel GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in the village of Rockchapel in the North West of County Cork, Ireland which forms part of the parish of Rockchapel and Meelin. The village is located close to border with County Kerry and County Limerick. The club plays Gaelic Football in the Duhallow division competitions. Ladies' Gaelic football is also played within the club. Rockchapel juvenile footballers play with St. Peter's which is an amalgamation of Meelin, Freemount and Rockchapel clubs at juvenile level. They last won the Duhallow Football Championship in 2012 and won the Cork County Junior Football Championship later that year.

Fr O'Neill's GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club founded in 1959 and based in the parish of Ballymacoda and Ladysbridge in Cork, Ireland. Tom Creedon was an Irish sportsperson from Macroom, County Cork. He played Gaelic football with his local club Macroom and was a member of the Cork senior inter-county team from 1975 until 1983. Creedon was predominantly a centre back but also played at right corner back and midfield on the Cork team that played in seven Munster finals. He won a National League medal with Cork in 1980. Creedon also played at inter-provincial level with Munster and was a member of the Munster teams that won the Railway Cup in 1977 and 1981.

The 1987 Cork Senior Football Championship was the 99th staging of the Cork Senior Football Championship since its establishment by the Cork County Board in 1887. The draw for the opening round fixtures took place on 21 December 1986. The championship began on 2 May 1987 and ended on 15 November 1987.

The 2020 Cork Premier Intermediate Football Championship was the 15th staging of the Cork Premier Intermediate Football Championship since its establishment by the Cork County Board in 2006. The draw for the group stage placings took place on 19 November 2019. The championship was scheduled to begin in April 2020, however, it was postponed indefinitely due to the 2020 coronavirus pandemic in Ireland. The championship eventually began on 25 July 2020 and, after being suspended once again on 5 October 2020, eventually ended on 1 August 2021.

Noel Twomey is an Irish former Gaelic footballer. At club level he played with Macroom, divisional side Muskerry and was also a member of the Cork senior football team.
