An election to Ceredigion District Council was held in May 1991. [1] It was preceded by the 1987 election and followed, after local government reorganization, by the first election to Ceredigion County Council in 1995. On the same day there were elections to the other local authorities and community councils in Wales.
Ceredigion District Council was formed on local government re-organisation in Wales in 1974. Its boundaries were identical to those of the former Cardiganshire County Council which was abolished when that council, together with Carmarthenshire County Council and Pembrokeshire County Council were merged to form Dyfed County Council. The authority existed from 1974 to 1996 when, on further reorganisation of local government, it formed the unitary authority of Ceredigion.
Ceredigion County Council is the governing body for the county of Ceredigion, since 1996 one of the unitary authorities of Wales.
The Independents remained the largest group with a number of councillors elected unopposed. [2] The uncontested wards were mainly in rural areas. [3] However, some wards were keenly contested, including Cardigan. [4]
