Carmarthenshire County Council election, 2012

The fourth election to the Carmarthenshire County Council was held on 1 May 2012. [1] It was preceded by the 2008 election and was followed by the 2017 election. Plaid Cymru won 28 seats whilst Labour and the Independents won 23 each. [2] The main feature of the election was a Labour recovery in the Llanelli area, and to some extent in the Gwendraeth and Ammanford area also, mainly at the expense of Independent candidates. Plaid Cymru lost ground to labour in the Llanelli area but gained seats elsewhere, becoming the largest party. An Independent-Labour coalition was again formed but with Labour as the leading partner. As a result, Kevin Madge replaced Meryl Gravell as the leader of the council.

Carmarthenshire County Council

Carmarthenshire County Council is the local council for the county of Carmarthenshire, Wales, providing a range of services under the control of elected county councillors that include education, planning, transport, social services and public safety. The council is one of twenty-two unitary authorities that came into existence on 1 April 1996 under the provisions of the Local Government (Wales) Act 1994. It took over local government functions previously provided by Carmarthen District, Dinefwr Borough, Llanelli Borough councils and the Carmarthenshire area of what was Dyfed County Council.

Madge resigned as leader of the Council in May 2015 having lost the leadership of the Labour group. Two days later it was announced that Plaid Cymru would from a coalition with the Independents. [3] Emlyn Dole was elected leader of the Council.

Deian Harries had come within six votes of victory for Plaid Cymru in 2008. The sitting Labour member, Hugh Evans, a member of the authority since its formation in 1995, stood down and Plaid Cymru captured the seat.

Burry Port (two seats)

Pat Jones, a member of the authority since 1999, was re-elected alongside another Labour candidate who narrowly ousted the sitting Independent member, who had served since 2004. The Conservative candidate had stood as a Liberal Democrat in 1999.

Cynwyl Elfed (one seat)

Irfon Jones had represented Newchurch from 1995 until 1999 but was defeated by Dorrien Thomas when the enlarged Cynwyl Elfed ward was created following boundary changes. Thomas retired at this election and Jones won a narrow victory over Plaid Cymru.

In a ward that returned only Labour councillors from 1995 until 2008, Winston Lemon held his seat for Plaid Cymru and Labour regaied the second seat from the Independents. David Tucker, a Labour councillor before 2008 and Keith Skivington, who stood in 2008 for Plaid Cymru, both contested the election as Independents which made the contest more unpredictable.

Terry Davies, the member since 2004, held one seat but the second seat was captured by Plaid Cymru, their first success in the ward. Clive Scourfield, the sitting Independent, stood down and there were press reports that Rupert Moon, former Llanelli and wales scrum-half was his chosen successor. Scourfield denied this to be the case and Moon was unsuccessful as the Independent vote was fragmented.

On the same day local elections in England and Scotland, and the Scottish Parliament election took place. This election was preceded by the previous Assembly election in 2003.

2012 Ceredigion County Council election

An election to Ceredigion County Council was held on 3 May 2012 along with elections to 20 of the other 21 local authorities in Wales, community council elections in Wales and other elections elsewhere in the United Kingdom. It was followed by the 2017 election.

The second elections to the Carmarthenshire County Council were held in May 1999. It was preceded by the 1995 election and followed by the 2004 election. They resulted in a coalition between Independent councillors and Plaid Cymru for the next five years.

The third election to the Carmarthenshire County Council were held in May 2004. It was preceded by the 1999 election and followed by the 2008 election. As in previous elections, the Independent councillors had the largest number of seats. They resulted in a coalition between Independent and Labour Councillors for the next four years.

The fourth election to the Carmarthenshire County Council was held on 1 May 2008. It was preceded by the 2004 election and followed by the 2012 election. While the Independent councillors again had the largest number of seats, Plaid Cymru gained considerable ground, notably in the Llanelli and Ammanford areas. The Independents formed a coalition with Labour.

Carmarthen Town North is an electoral ward, representing part of the community of Carmarthen, Carmarthenshire, Wales.

Carmarthen Town South is an electoral ward, representing part of the community of Carmarthen, Carmarthenshire, Wales. Much of its southern border is defined by the River Towy, with the Carmarthen Town North and Carmarthen Town West wards to the north.

Ammanford is an electoral ward, representing part of the community of Ammanford, Carmarthenshire, Wales.

Burry Port is an electoral ward, representing the community of Burry Port, Carmarthenshire, Wales.

Cenarth is an electoral ward, representing the communities of Newcastle Emlyn and Cenarth, Carmarthenshire, Wales. It is named Cenarth, rather than Newcastle Emlyn because the rural community of Cenarth has a larger population than the urban settlement of Newcastle Emlyn. A similar ward for local elections prior to 1987 was named Newcastle Emlyn.

Dafen is an electoral ward, representing the immediate area around the village of Dafen in the community of Llanelli Rural, Carmarthenshire, Wales.

An election to the Carmarthenshire County Council was held in March 1919. It was preceded by the 1913 election and followed by the 1922 election.

An election to the Carmarthenshire County Council was held in March 1949. It was preceded by the 1946 election and followed, by the 1952 election.

An election to the Carmarthenshire County Council was held in April 1952. It was preceded by the 1949 election and followed, by the 1955 election.

An election to the Carmarthenshire County Council was held in April 1955. It was preceded by the 1952 election and followed, by the 1958 election.

An election to the Carmarthenshire County Council was held in April 1958. It was preceded by the 1955 election and followed, by the 1961 election.

An election to the Carmarthenshire County Council was held on 13 April 1967. It was preceded by the 1964 election and followed by the 1970 election.

An election to the Carmarthenshire County Council was held on 9 April 1967. It was preceded by the 1967 election and was the last election prior to the reorganization of local government in Wales. Carmarthenshire County Council was merged with Cardiganshire and Pembrokeshire to form the new county of Dyfed and the first elections to the new authority were held in 1973.

The sixth election to Carmarthenshire County Council was held on 4 May 2017 as part of wider local elections across Wales. The election was preceded by the 2012 election.
