Charlie Helen Deakin Davies (born 9 June 1995) is a British musician from Walkern. They [lower-alpha 1] have released two EPs; Green under the name DIDI and Dog Bowl under the name Charlieeeee. They have also co-written the Gary Barlow song "Let's Get Drunk" and the Ellie Dixon song "Swing", the Kate Dimbleby album Songbirds and the compilation album The F Spot Femme Fatales, directed the Piri & Tommy tour Froge.tour, and supported China Crisis. They joined Loud LDN in August 2024.

Life and career

Early life, The Folk, and Delora

Charlie Helen Deakin Davies was born on 9 June 1995 in Walkern, and attended Freman College. [2] They got into music after being given an electric guitar by their father aged ten; [3] around this time, [4] they formed a band which played funk, indie, and grunge music, which they were in for around five years. Aged fifteen, [3] they formed the Folk, [2] a band composed of lead singer Lucy Holmes, ukelele player Rose Goodship, and violinist Sam Saward, for which Deakin Davies played guitar; [5] all four spent time busking in Hertford, [2] during which time they were spotted by Martin Lumsden of Cream Room, [6] a recording studio in Dane End in Hertfordshire which closed in 2021. [7] The band released a single, "When It Rains", and then an EP. [8]

Deakin Davies, Holmes, Goodship, and Saward later attended Freman College, [2] with Deakin Davies studying music technology at AS-level and dropping out after a year. [3] Saward later left the Folk; [9] the remaining members later changed their name to Delora, after discovering the word while googling at 3am and discovering a Latin word that meant "by the seashore", and released a single, "Come Alive", inspired by the sensation of being cheered up by music. [10] They later released an EP, Superglue, and then another single, "Sober", by which time Goodship had also left. [11]

Folkstock Records, DIDI, and "Let's Get Drunk"

Deakin Davies' first production works were made at the back of a converted shed at the end of their parents' garden, and which was built by their stepdad. [12] They produced Kelly Oliver's debut album, "This Land", which was released in 2013 on Folkstock Records, a record label Deakin Davies' mother, Helen Meissner, had set up specifically to release the music they had recorded together; [13] the label later released a second album by Oliver, Bedlam, in March 2016. [14] Deakin Davies also produced the label's The F Spot Femme Fatales, a compilation album for International Women's Day 2015, [15] which appeared on the Daily Telegraph's "Best Folk albums of 2015" list. [16] In 2016, they produced Ships by Bethan Lee, [17] and in 2017, they produced Songbirds by Kate Dimbleby, an a cappella album. [18]

In March 2017, they began releasing music of their own under the name DIDI, a contraction of their surname, after writing "Sorry" and finding they wanted to record it themselves; [19] they then released the singles "Awkward", [20] "Back Off", [3] "Fast and Furious", [21] and "Fickle Friends", [22] and then the Green EP, which contained "Go!". [23] In October 2017, they supported China Crisis at the Horn in St Albans. [24] In February 2019, [25] Gary Barlow hired Deakin-Davies as a studio assistant; [9] in a September 2021 with Moths and Giraffes, Deakin Davies asserted that the collaboration came about after meeting Fraser T. Smith at a ceremony for an award they had won, that the lockdown met that their contract had been extended from one year to two, and that it ended in February 2021. [25] One of the songs Deakin-Davies wrote, "Let's Get Drunk", appeared on Barlow's 2020 album Music Played by Humans , which charted at No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart. [9]

Trans Creative Collective and Charlieeeee

In January 2021, Deakin Davies came out as non-binary, and changed their name to Charlie; [2] they then moved from East London to West London, and moved to Ten87 studios in Tottenham Hale. [25] In March 2021, Deakin Davies attended a session at Abbey Road composed entirely of transgender, non-binary and gender diverse producers for International Transgender Day of Visibility, along with Max Blue Churchill and Jesley Faye. [26] Moved by the response, they cofounded the Trans Creative Collective, a directory of transgender musicians. [25] Deakin-Davies then co-produced Ellie Dixon's "Swing"; [27] in a September 2021 interview with Moths and Giraffes, they asserted that they contacted Dixon after hearing their earlier track "Sucker" on New Music Friday. [25] In November 2022, [28] they directed Piri & Tommy's Froge.tour. [29] Around this time, Deakin Davies was scouted for a year-long mentorship programme led by Fred Again, as part of which they cowrote a track with him, Raye, MNEK, and Kamille. [30]

"When I first came up with the name Dog Bowl in January of 2023, I had a very self-deprecating attitude that I think I'm growing out of. When I wrote this music, I didn't think I could ever compare to the artistes that I work with. I thought it was a joke that I was even trying to be a part of the scene with them. I always saw it as the dog bowl because it's the food scraps that were missed; the food scraps from all of these amazing people."

For 2023, Deakin Davies made a New Year's resolution to finish every song they started, regardless of opinion. One song completed in this manner was "Easy", a love song directed at a partner and friends, [32] which came about after Piri gave them some breakbeats to mess around with. [30] In January 2024, they signed to Relentless Records, and released "Easy" on the label; the song was credited to "Charlieeeee", and was released on 17 January. [33] The song was released alongside a video containing a commentary on being a queer person in a heteronormative society, [32] and was followed by "Bumped in the Head", which featured Ellie Dixon. [34] In May 2024, Deakin Davies announced their debut EP Dogbowl, [35] so-called due to their self-deprecating attitude at the time, [30] and released "Xtreme Circumstances", which completed the Charlieeeee's World music video trilogy; "Easy" depicted Deakin Davies falling to Earth and finding love, while "Bumped in the Head" depicted them exploring Earth and discovering their community and "Xtreme Circumstances" depicted them discovering a love for music and performing while contemplating a return to their home planet. [35] A further single, "Sunburn", was written about falling in love with best friends. [36] Deakin Davies released the EP in June 2024. [30]

Artistry and personal life

Writing in February 2024, Notion described Deakin Davies' sound as a combination of "indie vibes, hyper-pop energy, and a touch of '00s nostalgia" and "somewhat reminiscent of Paramore and Piri & Tommy's lovechild", [37] and in March 2024, DIY described "Bumped in the Head" as a fusion of "heavy D'n'B beats with synth-pop melodies"; [34] Deakin Davies used the former piece to assert that they had been inspired to introduce drum and bass to their sound from touring with drum and bass artists. [37] In a September 2017 interview with MusicOTFuture.com, Deakin Davies stated that their earliest influences were Ellie Goulding, Two Door Cinema Club, and Haim and that their current influences included Hole, Declan McKenna, Marika Hackman, and The Big Moon, [3] and in June 2024, they used an NME piece to cite Paramore and Chase & Status as influences. [30] In July 2023, Deakin Davies and Piri took part in a Trans Pride parade in London. [38] In August 2024, they joined Loud LDN, [39] a collective of London-based women and genderqueer musicians founded in May 2022. [40]

His first release with Kingsway Music was an EP released in 2010, Introducing Chris McClarney. The first studio album, Defender, was released later in 2010 by Kingsway Music. The next release, a live album, Everything and Nothing Less, released on June 9, 2015 by Jesus Culture Music alongside Sparrow Records.

Piri & Tommy are an English drum and bass duo, formed in 2021. The group are formed of Sophie "Piri" McBurnie and Tommy Villiers. The pair charted at number 99 on the UK Singles Chart with their single "On & On". They released their debut mixtape froge.mp3 in October 2022.

Dehaney Nia Lishahn Hunt, known professionally as Nia Archives, is an English record producer, DJ, singer and songwriter. Born in Bradford in West Yorkshire, she moved to Leeds aged seven, out of the family home aged sixteen, and then to Greater Manchester, during which time she was inspired by jungle documentaries and their women participants. After finding herself messed about by local producers, she began producing her own jungle and drum and bass works; after moving to Hackney Wick for university and finding that no record labels would release them, she released them herself, attracting attention for the EPs Headz Gone West and Forbidden Feelingz. After featuring on numerous 'best of' lists, she released a third EP, Sunrise Bang Ur Head Against the Wall, in 2023, which topped the UK Dance Albums Chart, followed by an album, Silence Is Loud, which peaked at No. 16 on the UK Albums Chart. Hunt is generally regarded as being at the forefront of the post-2020 drum and bass revival, and has been cited as an inspiration by Piri.

Sophie Leigh McBurnie, known professionally as Piri, is an English musician. Born in Rochdale in Greater Manchester, she is half of the band Piri & Tommy and an original member of the female and genderqueer collective Loud LDN.

Loud LDN is a British collective of 165 female and gender-expansive artists based in London. Formed in May 2022 by Coupdekat and Maisi as a WhatsApp group chat called Ladies Making Noise in London, the chat started off with ten members including Piri and Matilda Cole and later added Caity Baser, Venbee, Issey Cross, Charlotte Plank, and Bshp. The chat expanded into its own Instagram page and eventually into its own events before moving to Discord. As of October 2024, the collective has 165 members. One UK Singles Chart in 2023 featured five entries from Loud LDN members.

"On & On" is a liquid drum and bass song by Piri & Tommy, from their mixtape Froge.mp3. Released on 28 July 2022 on Polydor Records, the track was written after the pair attended that year's Parklife Festival. The song premiered as BBC Radio 1's "Hottest Record"song charted at No. 99 on the UK Singles Chart and received positive reception, with Time Out, The Forty Five, NME, Dancing Bears, and Billboard rating it on their year-end best of lists. A music video was released on 12 October 2022 to promote Froge.mp3.

"Beachin" is a jungle track by Piri & Tommy. Originally intended for late October 2021, the track was eventually released on 28 January 2022 through EMI as their second single from Froge.mp3. The track describes a trip the pair had taken to Formby beach and ends with a spoken word section discussing the creation of sand sculptures. The track received positive reception from Matthew Perpetua and from reviewers from Clash and The Sunday Times. Skream later released an abstract remix of the song.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Updown</span> 2023 single by Piri & Tommy Villiers

"Updown" is a hyperpop song single by Piri & Tommy Villiers. Released on 17 February 2023 on Polydor Records, the song was written about cowgirl sex and was performed during live sets prior to release. Upon release, the song received airplay from BBC Radio 1 and Capital Dance and was reviewed by reviewers from LeftLion, Impact, Dancing Bears, and Clash. A music video was released on 2 March.

Eleanor Charlotte Siobhan Dixon is an English musician. Born in Foxton, Cambridgeshire, she released three EPs while studying for a maths degree, then gigged for around six months and released two further singles. The COVID-19 lockdown in the United Kingdom meant that the country's live event industry shut down, prompting her to upload content to her social media, where she attracted attention for her deconstruction of song harmonies and original verses. She released Crikey! It's My Psyche in 2021 and signed to Decca Records in 2022. After going viral for her "Jota on the Wing" football chant in 2023, she released In Case of Emergency later that year, and in 2024, she featured on Charlieeeee's "Bumped in the Head". She is a member of Loud LDN and is noted for her use of unorthodox instrumentation, such as mugs, stationery, and kitchen equipment.

<i>Froge.mp3</i> 2022 mixtape by Piri & Tommy

Froge.mp3 is the debut mixtape by Piri & Tommy. Released on 21 October 2022 and on vinyl on 22 April 2023 on Polydor Records, the mixtape contains "Sunlight", previous singles "Soft Spot", "Beachin", "Words", and "On & On", focus track "Say It", and six additional tracks. The album was promoted by both Froge.tour, a nine-date tour, and Froge.tv, a twelve-episode YouTube Shorts series. Critical reception was broadly positive, with Gigwise describing the album as the 45th best album of 2022, NME rating it amongst the twenty best mixtapes and EPs of 2022, and Ellie Dixon rating it as her favourite album of the year. Additionally, the mixtape charted at No. 13 on the UK Dance Albums Chart.

Parthenope Ann Wald-Harding, usually credited as Parthenope, is an English musician and singer. She is best known for her cover of Norah Jones's "Don't Know Why", and is a member of Loud LDN.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Froge.tour</span> 2022 concert tour by Piri & Tommy

Froge.tour is a nine-date tour by the English band Piri & Tommy. Released to promote their mixtape Froge.mp3, the tour began on 2 November 2022 at Belgrave Music Hall and ended on 19 November 2022 at The Warehouse Project. Sets included most of Froge.mp3, several future singles, and cover versions of Chic's "Everybody Dance" and Crystal Waters's "Gypsy Woman". Their Brighton gig was opened by Coupdekat, while their London gig was opened by Maisi and contained pole dancing and Parthenope. These three gigs were between them reviewed by Alexis Petridis and reviewers from LeftLion, Brighton & Hove News, and Gigwise, who gave what they saw a mixed reception.

Maisie Harriet Brand Bourke, known professionally as Maisi, is a British musician and social media personality from south-east London. The daughter of Jo Brand, she co-founded Loud LDN, a collective of women and non-binary musicians, and has released several singles and supported Piri & Tommy on their Froge.tour. She has also gone viral on TikTok for her attempts at addressing her boyfriend's restrictive eating.

Thomas George Villiers is an English musician from Saffron Walden. After being introduced to dance music via his brother, he began producing drum and bass tracks and uploading them to SoundCloud. While at the Royal Northern College of Music, he joined See Thru Hands and cofounded Porij, with whom he released one and two EPs respectively. In mid-2020, he formed Piri & Tommy with Piri, with whom he released the mixtape Froge.mp3, which they promoted with Froge.tour, and several singles including "Soft Spot", "Beachin", "On & On", "Feel It", "Updown", and "Nice 2 Me". He also played Scotty in the music video for Wet Leg's "Ur Mum" and has released several singles including a remix of LF System's "Afraid to Feel".

Katherine Reilly, known professionally as Coupdekat, is an English musician. She is best known for cofounding Loud LDN with Maisi, but has also released two EPs and has supported Piri & Tommy on their Froge.tour.
