The American League of Professional Baseball Clubs,known simply as the American League (AL),is the younger of two leagues constituting Major League Baseball (MLB) in the United States and Canada. It developed from the Western League,a minor league based in the Great Lakes states,which eventually aspired to major league status. It is sometimes called the Junior Circuit because it claimed Major League status for the 1901 season,25 years after the formation of the National League.

John Rikard Dempsey is an American former professional baseball player. He played for 24 seasons as a catcher in Major League Baseball from 1969 to 1992,most prominently for the Baltimore Orioles where he played for 10 years and was a member of the 1983 World Series winning team. Dempsey was known for being one of the best defensive catchers of his era. In 1997,he was inducted into the Baltimore Orioles Hall of Fame.

Edward Joseph Farmer was an American professional baseball pitcher,who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for eight different teams,predominantly in the American League,between 1971 and 1983. The team he played the most games for was the Chicago White Sox,including one All-Star Game appearance. After his retirement as a player,he spent nearly 30 years as a White Sox radio broadcaster.
Kenneth Wayne Singleton is an American former professional baseball player and television sports commentator. He played in Major League Baseball as an outfielder and designated hitter from 1970 to 1984,most prominently as a member of the Baltimore Orioles where,he was a three-time All-Star player and was a member of the 1983 World Series winning team. He also played for the New York Mets and the Montreal Expos.
James Louis Beattie is an American former professional baseball pitcher who played for the New York Yankees and Seattle Mariners from 1978 to 1986. He also served as the Montreal Expos' general manager from 1995 to 2001,and was the Baltimore Orioles' general manager with Mike Flanagan from 2003 to 2005. As of 2010,Beattie served as a professional scout in the Toronto Blue Jays organization through the 2018 season. Beattie retired from his decades-long career in MLB at the end of the 2018 season. Beattie starred in baseball and basketball at South Portland High School in South Portland,Maine.

The 2007 Major League Baseball season began on April 1 with a rematch of the 2006 National League Championship Series;the St. Louis Cardinals and New York Mets played the first game of the season at Busch Stadium in St. Louis,Missouri,which was won by the Mets,6–1. The regular season concluded with seven teams entering the postseason who had failed to reach the 2006 playoffs including all National League teams,with only the New York Yankees returning;a dramatic one-game playoff between the Colorado Rockies and San Diego Padres;and the largest September collapse for a leading team in baseball history,with the Mets squandering a 7-game lead with 17 to play,losing on the final day of the regular season,and the Philadelphia Phillies capturing the National League East for the first time since 1993. The season ended on October 28,with the Boston Red Sox sweeping the World Series over the Rockies,four games to none.
The 1996 Major League Baseball season was the final season of league-only play before the beginning of interleague play the following season. The season ended with the New York Yankees defeating the defending champion Atlanta Braves in six games for the World Series title,the Yankees' first championship since 1978. The record for most home runs hit in an MLB regular season,set at 4,458 in 1987,was broken,as the AL and NL combined to hit 4,962 home runs. Only 196 shutouts were recorded in the 2,266 MLB regular-season games. This was the first season in the Divisional Series era to be played to the full 162 games,as the 1994–95 player's strike caused the first two seasons of the era to be abbreviated.
Russell Henry Snyder is an American former professional baseball player. He played in Major League Baseball as an outfielder for the Kansas City Athletics (1959–60),Baltimore Orioles (1961–67),Chicago White Sox (1968),Cleveland Indians (1968–69) and Milwaukee Brewers (1970). Snyder was a member of the 1966 world champion Baltimore Orioles team.
The 1979 Major League Baseball season concluded with the Pittsburgh Pirates defeating the Baltimore Orioles in seven games in the 1979 World Series. None of the post-season teams of 1977 or 1978 returned to this year's postseason.
